- Story mode removed
- ability to ‘buy watches and sunglasses’ (with real money)
- supercars added (?!)
Sounds lame. But it’s EA sports now

I don't know if I am inadvertently high-jacking this thread, but Sim Dream Development have a free mod for Assetto Corsa, with which you can drive the F1-75.
I gave it a spin at Silverstone and Barcelona. At the last track I was about seven seconds slower than the real car in the real world, which seems realistic because I am always about 7 seconds slower than either the faster simmers or the real drivers!

I know I’m an old fogey (well, I’m 35) but anyone who pays actual cash for things such as sunglasses for your character to wear is a fool. But I feel that way about micro-transactions in general, it must be a nightmare having kids who video game these days.
I feel loathed paying for ‘track packs’ for Assetto Corsa Competitzione for example, but at least I know I’m getting a handful of new, quality tracks that will provide me with hours and hours of fun. I just hate the thought that some (many!) games can cost well over £100 if you want all of the content.
There’s my oldie rant for the day!

Hopefully, they won't make features like this mandatory to make progress in the game, because then we can just simply ignore it and if purchasing virtual items is what makes someone happy, I don't care, just don't use my money for it.

Indeed. It’s a bit like my approach to Forza Motorsport. I’ll happily pay a couple of quid for a DLC car, given that a model car these days is pushing £100 in 1/43, and I’m getting real content out of it.

Still, nice to see a lap of Miami.

It looks quite good, doesn't it. There are just so few surprises these days from all the yearly updates - F1, MotoGP, WRC, MXGP, Supercross - all yearly installments, all pretty much a mild evolution of the previous game for another 50 quid. I miss the excitement at trying to work out how a new game would feel, what they'd do to it. Like - F1'97-98-99 were three completely different games using completely different developers and completely different engines.
That said, when that still does happen in this day and age you get NASCAR 21 Ignition. Which for everyone fortunate enough not to have played it, was a complete ground up new game for last year, and it was horrendous. So I'm not really criticising F1 22, just I guess bemoaning the lack of real surprises these days.

VR looks good - early days still, but things look promising. Graphics don't really look too different over last year, which I wasn't expecting. Engine sounds apparently aren't final, but they also sound pretty decent right now.
Being able to do the entire formation lap manually looks like a good feature, too. From what the content creators have said, the physics sound relatively accurate to what we've seen so far the 2022 cars - heavy in the low speed corners, quick in the high speed corners.
RIP Jeff, though the new race engineer is cool. Apparently they've used a former McLaren engineer (Can't remember his name).

When they say fully manual, does that mean stopping in your grid slot too? I’d need help finding the correct one that’s for sure. But it’s always immersion breaking when the computer takes over and doesn’t get the speed right and you start ghosting through other cars.

That seems to be the case

Anyway, yeah, this looks pretty nice. I like formation laps too, but they have to be fully manual. And I can’t think of any that have been up to now? The computer always takes back over at the last corner and puts you in your grid slot. I’m not sure if I’ve tried it in F1 2021 mind.

Tell you what I’d love from the F1 series - MotoGP22 this year has two fully licensed seasons in it - 2022 obviously, and rather randomly also 2009. I think it’s basically the developers making sure there’s still some Valentino Rossi in the game - how could there be a MotoGP game without him -but it’s well done and how great would something similar be in F1 2023? A great way to make use of/re-implement classic content.

OT, but speaking of MotoGP, I've seen this video the other day:
And I was wondering, how is it possible to steer the bike this smoothly? I could never achieve anything like this, it looked like my rider was having a seizure.

The computer does the final bit for you in 2021 too.
I feel like they were trying to do the classic season with F1 2013, but it was too difficult to get all the licensing together, so it became more generic. Still the best classic content any modern F1 game has had, with not just classic cars but appropriate drivers and tracks too.
I’d love to see 1996 included. Not just because it’s the season I started watching and because I’m a massive Damon Hill fan, but also because it’s the missing season from the early official console games. The rather average Ubisoft PC game was set in 1996, but that’s it.
I suppose 2007-2009 (not counting the Wii game) would also be worth a look because they were skipped too, between Sony and Codemasters custody. Maybe if Lewis retires they could have his first and last seasons represented in the same game. That would be something, even if it did mean narrow, grooved tyred crapwagons.

But yeah, I’d vote 2007 or 2008 because they’re the two seasons that were completely skipped. 2007 and Lewis’ final season would make all kinds of sense, that would be excellent.

Physics and graphics were awful. But it had some good ideas. The retirements were realistic and a fun addition, damage/wear on your own car as well.
The driver roster where you could swap drivers around was a nice thing as well. As were the 8 "driver 1-8" drivers, that represented Ralf Schumacher, Villeneuve, Prost, Senna, Mansell, Andretti and a couple of more I cannot remember right now.

Re the F1 series, I agree it is better to just get a mod on AC if you need the latest updates
The problem with the game is it charges high prices for something that is always late and has about 15-30 patches and extra DLC every season
Don't get me wrong, it is a good game, but one every 5 years would do

I’ll probably do what I did with F1 2021 and wait until it’s available on the cheap later in the year.

Might get F1 2022 only for the new cars of this era and tracks - plus career mode, which is average in the semi-sim titles (ACC, AC, rF, A2), and then I think I'm done with Codies games.

They go on sale so quickly anyway. I really wanted Supercross 5 this year, because I’d heard it was a vast improvement over 4 and really good fun. It’s been out like 2 months and already on sale. It won’t take long, and by the time it goes on sale it’ll be patched and better anyway.

Don't watch if you're easily offended by people who don't take F1 super seriously, but a useful video. First one I've seen that shows how you find your starting spot at the end of the formation lap.

I wonder what they'll do with Shanghai and Portimao this year. Would be a shame if they made Portimao just for 2021

Posted 11 May 2022 - 07:47
I hope they keep them in and actually make them available. I found it SO frustrating knowing that F1 2021 included Shanghai and not to mention the full 2020 grid in addition to 2021 - but kept it all locked behind 'Braking Point'. MotoGP 22 has it right. The full 2009 season, all riders, tracks, liveries, to race on whenever you like.

The 2020 cars were only in Braking Point, which was actually good fun (I chose Williams) but I don’t see much replay value.

So, I started playing this over the weekend (on PS4) and there are some differences to F12021
- harder to get on the throttle (it takes quite a bit more care to apply the throttle)
- easier to get the brakes right (I feel it's a lot harder to lock up during the -straight braking- phase. When you turn in you clearly need to trail brake and release the brakes or you will lock up but overall getting the brakes right seems a lot easier)
- the AI is pretty bad at wheel to wheel with you. It turns in even if you're there (like Schumacher/Villeneuve), they run wide and tag you sometimes, they defend quite late or they just dive bomb sometimes
- DRS is a lot less powerful. Passes are a lot harder, and ERS seems equally powerful
other people's thoughts?

I bought this, but haven't actually tried it yet. Which sort of makes me an idiot for paying full price, but I'll never learn.

Unfortunately, I've read on many places that the presence of certain sim hardware makes the framerate extremely low (below 30 FPS) and the devs were unable to fix it as of yet.
