Getting echoes of when Prost designed their own gearbox for the first time and it pretty much sunk the entire season. I hope Alfa get on top of their own in-house gearbox soon.

Oh they’re running their own gearbox this year?

That explains things a bit more.

I think they designed only the external case, not the whole gearbox.

From certain angles and certain light the alpha looks like a Toyota (livery)! Anyone else noticed this?

Absolutely, already thought it when the launch pics came out. The livery, especially on the nose, is very similar to Toyota.

This make sense as the gear ratios have been found to be identical to Ferrari.

Things are looking surprisingly good. Top-10 should be possible, as long as the car doesn't break.

Fascinating times. I think Bottas will have a pretty epic season to be honest. Out from under the mental baggage that came from being at Mercedes and losing to Hamilton.

No surprise, the car seems to be good as was expected! Bottas said already yesterday, that they might surprise many and could compete even with Mercedes.

Zhou a full second slower than Bottas. I didn't expect much from him, but this is worse than I thought. Could cost Alfa badly in the WCC.

It's nothing the Chinese sponsors can't fix  :p.

As an aside, I am absolutely having this Bottas redemption arc if it comes to fruition  .

I don't have high expectations of Zhou, he is ultimately a pay driver. But that was a respectable showing to avoid going out in Q1.

Very solid job by Bottas and Zhou did not embarrass himself either.

The package seems a major step ahead. Let's see how is the operational side of the team. Should be a fun year.

Driver of the day in qualifying has to be Bottas.  After a severely compromised testing season, to put that car P6 is an incredible performance by driver and team.

Great stuff from the team and Bottas, well deserved. A small part of me still thinks it's a pity Kimi isn't around anymore now that the car seems competitive, but yeah it was time to move on.

Well, congrats to Bottas and the team for overachieving. Bottas must be in heaven standing next to Lewis on the grid and in front of Russell

Glad to see Kimi left Alfa a good car, he tends to always do that bar the 2014 Lotus. Bottas and Kimi would have been a good partnership.

Excellent stuff from Bottas! Can't help but feel satisfied for him!

Need to give a shout out to Zhou too, were his second laptime in Q2 not deleted he would have qualified in P14 and half a second off Valterri so the massive 1.8 second gap between them in Q2 so whilst being half a second down isn't great for his first qualifying in F1 as a rookie I think he did a pretty good job. Not saying he is going to set the world alight but I have a tiny glimmer of hope that he isn't going to be worse than Mazepin, as most were expecting!

Ridiculous. Nothing suggests that Faria is a talent that deserves to be in an F1 junior academy. Clearly someone who's paying to be in this academy.

True. The car is better than the position he qualified in but... it was his debut race and his team mate is a qualifying specialist. He beat two Aston Martin's, a McLaren, an AlphaTauri and a Williams. That's not bad at all.

If you compare Zhou's debut this year with Nikita Mazepin's debut last year then Zhou has done really great in comparison. It's his first weekend, let's give him some credit. Q2 is a good result and as someone has mentioned here he was only half a second of Bottas off (if his best time had not been deleted, he would have been 14th then).

That someone was me! Also just seen that his DRS wasn't working so all things considered, this was a decent result for him. Obviously totally overshadowed by Bottas but I'm not ready to write him off just yet.

Unfortunately, Bottas has still the same limitations. In the right window is very fast though.

Car seems really good.

Yes, but he do not goes anywhere if he makes mistakes. I would not be surprised if at end of the year Zhou is faster than him in races.

Great start for the team. The start and racepace of Bottas was a little dissapointment (compared to friday and compared to Zhou), also Bottas couldn't overtake and didn't seem aggressive enough, but all in all they have a strong package, lets hope they will continue staying strong.

Alfa beaten by Haas, let that sink in.

Zhou was great against Bottas, only missed his start.

I was a bit worried after yesterday but it was great to see Zhou put in a great performance and recover from a terrible start. He's always been a better racer than qualifier, the opposite of Bottas. I think his racecraft is excellent, precise and fair (remind you of anyone?). Hopefully this gives the Zhou naysayers something to think about.

Bottas was 6th, Zhou 10th. Clear difference between the drivers. The start was bad, but those things happen. He did solid recovery and was there with Magnussen to capitalise when it mattered.
