Here is the screwed up part...we are finally being given more of the atmosphere at the track over the T.V., but the cynical types are too busy thinking it's fake and calling for it's removal.  Go be grumpy some where else.

...I shouldn't discuss fake crowd noises in the fake crowd noises thread?

I would suggest that many of those complaining have never actually heard the crowd at an actual GP, having never been closer than a tv screen.

Had a little talk on today's race thread with Risil about it. I can't say that the crowd noises today did sound fake.

No it isn't always fake. The crowd isn't always cheering, they are sometimes also in awe, in despair or in fear. All noises that you can't distinguish from cheering when it is a huge crowd.

When I'm in the home crowd at the football and I can tell the difference between when my team scores and when the opposition does

Usually yes. And in a stadium the noise confines itself in a small region. But the mics alongside a track do pick up such noises in a different way.
I vividly remember Spa 2008 when Raikkonen crashed in the last laps after that amazing fight with Hamilton. A roar of disbelief went rolling over the hills. Later when I watched it on TV it sounded a lot like cheering.

Fwiw I think the sound mixing is clumsy, I don't know anything about whether it's literally being "faked" in the manner of the canned laughter in a 1970s US sitcom.

I think in an ideal world all the crowd noise would sound more ambient or environmental, Liberty's current approach is a bit too neat and "we tell you how to feel".

I don't believe it's fake. I think it's real crowd noise but the mix turned up.

Or like the laughs and applause on any Top gear episode with the three musketeers.

It’s being mixed that way because for better or worse that’s how the production wants it depicted.  I’d reckon they are going for some of that “bring the ambience of the track home” vibe but times it doesn’t translate as it does live a fair amount of the time.

The piped-in crowd noises drove me mad. There must be a more subtle and believable way of adding them to the mix.

Almost makes me nostalgic for the air-horn parping yahoos who seemed to accompany every Ferrari victory in the Michael Schumacher days.

I’m late to this, but I was one of those air-horn parping yahoos when I went to my first F1 race at Indy in ‘03, and I did use it, sitting across from the podium, when Schumacher won!

That wasn’t anywhere near as ridiculous as the group behind me dressed head to toe in Ferrari gear, though. One of them had something that looked akin to a giant red rubber bassoon that sounded like thunderous flatulence, and he would blow it every time Raikkonen or Montoya went by. I wonder if he thinks he was the reason that Montoya collided with Barrichello down the track from him in Turn 1 early in the race.

They played the wrong sample when Perez was trying to overtake Sainz. They choose the "what a pass" one and not the "ooo that didn't work" one.

SWMBO commented on the fake cheers today. Maybe I’m just getting used to it or the sound mix is a bit more subtle since Bahrain, but apparently it still sounds fake.

The fake cheers were quieter for sure so at least they dulled it down.

Surprised there was no fake crowd noise when Martin Brundle was interviewing those random US celebs on the grid walk who i have never heard of except Dj Khaled who is only there for attention and has never watched an F1 race and Beckham

Indeed - definitely still sounds fake but at least the volume has been turned down a bit.

There was at least one glaring occasion when the crowd noise was mixed way too loud....I think it might have been when Perez was attempting a move.

I'm using a very good 5.1 sound system with the capacity to rock plates off shelves. I suspect they are mixing this for the majority who either use TV speakers or sound bars. Very little in the rear speakers and the crowd noise is sometimes intrusive when something the director perceives as exciting happens. It might be interesting to do a quick poll of what people use for their audio....there's also earbuds connected to portable devices as an option. It is genuinely difficult to do a suitable mix for all these possibilities.

Back in the olden days when we only had standard definition pictures in 4:3 and mono sound, and V12 engines....you'd occasionally hear the crowd when something truly astonishing happened....or when Mansell was doing well at Silverstone....and that did add to the excitement and atmosphere.

I think some of the crowdsounds were really weird this weekend. Like when the commentator was saying about how the crowd is absolutely wild and then there was absolutely silence etc. Was really weird.

The crowd was pretty wild in T11. Shouting a lot, singing Checo, Checo and making a lot of noise for all the moves there

The level of the crowd sound is more a function of how it’s mixed more than your system.  A better fidelity system will produce details not heard in lower quality systems but unless the mix is poor (or referenced to another format) there isn’t a substantial difference.  Likely there are three mixes delivered.  Surround (typically 5.1 though some are doing Atmos, don’t think FOM are), stereo and mono (though mono is disappearing quicker than Atmos or 7.1 are appearing).  The other feeds are down mixed from from the surround mix.

Those here that think they can do a better job you’re in luck.  There is an opening in Biggin Hill for a broadcast audio person.  If you’re an ace with Riedel and Lawo this could be your gig.  Though I doubt most commenting know what either of those are let alone used them.

Yeah, there was one occasion where it was super fake. That standard 2 second "whooo" mixed in way to loud.

I know but the way Sky F1's style and format is these days only matter of time before they do implent fake crowd noise for Martin's grid walks when he interviews some random celeb

I think the better job here is not doing fake sound. It has such an 'uncanny valley' audio signature to it. It doesn't sound right. It doesn't sound live and dynamic. It sounds like an audio bed.

Maybe someone could Shazam it and we could put this to bed  :rotfl:

Seems that in Monaco, with the local TV director, there is no fake crowd noise. I don't miss it at all :) but I wonder what it would have been like with home hero Leclerc in contention for pole/win.

I'd take the fake crowd noise over the constant team radio chatter going on.

There's usually more fake crowd noise in the race than other sessions, so it's not a big indication yet

You need overtaking/incidents for crowd noise, so...

The post-qualifying cheers in France weren't fake today:
