A worthy opener!

With the predicted temps I wonder if it will be like Turkey that one time when there was no grip and it was all a bit of a joke.

Yes, but one (News asks local pol if it's worth it.  He doesn't know.

Also, thanks for the work you've put into that post - must have taken a long time

Great work jp!

As for the weekend, I expect a massive shitshow, enough drama to keep us entertained over the winter break, Red Bull to lose their bearings Singapore-style and a Norris win.

Spectacular work, lads. Loving the break down on all the hassles big and small, let’s hope it’s all alright on the night. Meanwhile, if not, at least we’ll have these…

A friend of mine is there for the weekend, doing some sort of event in the lead up to the Grand Prix. She seemed rather excited about it all. Slightly jealous. She’s not based in Las Vegas. Travels a lot for work though.

Is the track going to be super smooth? Or just look nice with bumps everywhere.

What type of grip will driver have on this new tarmac?

How will tyres be heated up in weather that is going to be cold and maybe one of the coldest races in the last 20 years.

I will watch Qualifying and the Race but I won’t be watching the build up and practice sessions.

I honestly feel a horrible crash will happen this weekend given the circumstances.

There's barely any run-up. It will be fine.

However, the chicane at the end of the strip on lap 1 could be quite fun to watch with all those heavy tanks and cold tyres...

Well, I must admit to not being able to determine where the grid is, even looking at a higher res pic. Nevertheless, it seems perilously close to the first turn. Those toward the back of the grid will accelerate appreciably more than those at the front. Maybe my pessimism will prove to be unfounded, I hope so.

Shorter runs to the first corner are more likely to produce crashes. Ste. Devote, La Source tend to produce crashes more than anywhere else.

In a short run the back of the grid is arriving at a comparatively much higher speed than the front. That’s lessened when the run is longer as everyone gets closer to a similar speed.

Hmm good point, I hadn't actually thought of that. Was just basing my observation on Baku, which has never had any problems.

So what does one do when JP asks one to contribute to an OP that's going live in the middle of the night when one is still asleep on West Coast US time? Well, JP says to just chuck it in the thread anyway, at the same time he also steals one's Clive James video. So, here's the continuation of the "Page 33 ur doing it wrong OP" OP.

hq720.jpg

Howdy, Partner! For some rea$on, this week’s edition of Formula 1 comes from the desert wasteland known as Las Vegas. Now, some of us from the Indycar threads are secretly jealous that F1 has managed to pull off this caper. Indycar, very not-famously, was the first racing series to close down the Las Vegas Strip (in 2011, the rest of the story is best left unexplored) for a promotional lap, but to run a whole race on the Strip? Well, golf clap to Liberty.  This promises to be quite the eye-opening event, if perhaps not a fully-functioning, ready for prime time race, with a decent likelihood of ending in farce. And if that doesn’t sound like something Indycar could’ve pulled off then, well… like I said, jealous.

F1 in Vegas: How We Got Here

53e23ba5fcc2f7201ed43bee67dc7b93.jpg

(your view of the track outside businesses that didn't pay Liberty)

To understand how we got to this point in Las Vegas, you have to understand how Las Vegas got to this point in Las Vegas. War, war never changes. Oh, sorry, wrong story. But Las Vegas does!  Regularly! The city has undergone more reinventions than Madonna or the wrestler Chris Jericho. Technically speaking, there should be no there there, where there is now an improbable city with an even more improbable F1 race.

First, the railroad came to town, because people wanted to get to Los Angeles, and all the rest of the rail lines went to San Francisco. Hey, I guess we’re a railroad town, now! (1905).

Then people in Los Angeles really, really wanted to get divorced and Nevada made it remarkably easy – you just had to live on a dude ranch for a few weeks to become a citizen, and qualify for your divorce. Hey, are we now a resort destination? (1920)

Then the people of Los Angeles needed power, and the rest of America needed jobs, so Boulder err Hoover Dam turned the town into a small city almost overnight. Hey, are we a city now? (1931)

Then the mobsters on the East Coast needed somewhere sleepy to launder their money, and suddenly the liberal gambling laws remade the little city into a major gambling destination (1946).

From that point forward, the history of the city is inexorably linked with the gaming industry. But that didn’t stop the reinvention! Oh, no.  In fact, one might say this reinvention is remarkably similar to the current one, where we’ve ended up with F1. We said, Hey, does this mean we are Monaco now? And promptly brought in the Folies Bergere straight from Paris, reimagined their dancers as the iconic “Vegas showgirls”, opened an integrated resort called the Moulin Rouge, and also brought in Noel Coward and other foreign acts to entertain the rank-and-file American guests. (1950s)

Somewhere along the way, that all fizzled out and Las Vegas rebranded as an All-American Wild West saloon, despite the fact that there absolutely nothing going on here during the Wild West era, save for some Paiute and a few Mormons. (1970s)

20110306184504newvegasstrip.jpg

Then a new era of megaresorts began, on lots of land owned by a famous fellow who lived in squalor on the top floor of one of them. This era was yet another time when the city made an about-face and remembered that there’s a world outside of the USA, which resulted in the first F1 race in the Caesars Palace parking lot. (1980s)

Then suddenly Las Vegas took another hard right turn as this very family-unfriendly town discovered the concept of family tourism and built a bunch of weird fantasy hotels like the Luxor and the Excalibur, adding animatronic dragons and pirates and a handful of roller coasters. Boy, was that a weird era that came out of nowhere. (1990s)

Then they discovered EDM and dayclubs and DJs and suddenly it became Ibiza around here (2000s).  This morphed into a post-recession boom in Ultra-Luxe resorts with exorbitant pricing which has ended up in a new trend of megaresorts catering to tourists from around the world with lots and lots and lots of cash (Resorts World, Aria, Fontainebleau, MSG Sphere, etc).

And it’s this current era that has led to our current predicament of finding an F1 race in our midst. What we have now is a sleepy desert settlement with occasional world-class pretensions that seems eager to put on a world-class event. Will we get a Major Event that gives us equal bits of Monaco, Singapore, and Baku (the castles are fake, though) all rolled into one? Or will we get a gussied-up Indycar street race with all the mayhem and randomness that we’ve come to expect and (in some cases) love?

And will the locals put up with the F1 circus enough to allow the event to exist for the entirety of its 10 year contract? We’ll see. By that time, Las Vegas may have moved on to the next thing. I’m guessing AI/virtual strip clubs, probably. Or the movie Idiocracy.

Also, RIP Matthew Perry, AKA Benny from that game who apparently got the gig of one of the best things in New Vegas because of how much he spoke about loving playing Fallout 3.

Las Vegas might be the top of the current popularity bubble.

Who knows.

I think that bubble is already shrinking, at least in the US.

Edit: it's an exit isn't it... still could cause some fun

That's the pit exit.

And the racing line will be on the outside of that.

That pit exit is asking for trouble

It’s really out of the way.

By that time, Las Vegas may have moved on to the next thing. I’m guessing AI/virtual strip clubs, probably.

I like how you think.  AI/animatronics will render the chicken ranches obsolete--and run the pimps out of business, too.  The issue of prostitution will be moot.

A worthy opener!

With the predicted temps I wonder if it will be like Turkey that one time when there was no grip and it was all a bit of a joke.

I keep seeing lots of talk about 4 degree temperatures, but that's not what the forecast shows. More like 13C at race start time (55F). Not terribly cold, so that's not so bad for the tires.

Track temperature will be the key measurement.
