In the week that people are questioning F1 morals after racing in Saudi Arabia, F1 announces they are racing in Sin City. Couldn't have timed it better

Anyway, which F1 driver is going to wake up with a tiger in their room? I reckon it's Tsunoda...

FOM doesn’t allow this to be embedded so if you want to watch the festivities it’s at https://www.youtube....h?v=fHd79zyJfEs .

The best part is when Amanda Busick introduces Greg Maffei from Liberty Mutual

Will qualifying be on Friday seeing as the race is taking place on Saturday night or will they have qualifying on Saturday in the usual lunch time slot? If it's still Saturday qualifying and someone has a big crash the mechanics could be pushed for time to repair the car in time for the race.

I hate all of the American Continental races. North, south, and central. As an Aussie, they are on at stupid o’clock early of a Monday morning. Try being a remotely functional human first day of the week after being awake all night!

Im glad its on a saturday because if it was a sunday for europeans and anyone else further east it would be very early monday morning... and I hate mondays.

This just makes it a similar time to Australia or Japan, got no problem with it

Bathurst would not be at all suitable for F1 it's far too bumpy.

Can't wait to introduce you to Koval Ave.

Okay, we are back with a bit of a tidy up, but there’s still a few signs left as to why we closed in order to keep the flow of conversation going as best I can so just try and move on!

It probably also means minimum disruption from closing the strip off if they condense it into two days of action.

Good thing about this being on a Sat night means that if the race starts at 8pm Vegas time, it will be 2pm Sunday afternoon in Sydney & Melbourne 🙂👍

I love small hours of the morning race starts. Good crowd too - bleary eyed people who just got up mixing with people who’ve been up all night.

I've visited some pretty odd places in the world.  Pyongyang, Ashgabat, Djibouti, Middlesbrough, Ny Ålesund, Ushuaia.

There are only two places I would not be happy to go back to.

And one of those is Vegas.  A shithole of vacuity.  Only thing there worth seeing is the mob museum.

For EU it will be 6 AM if they race at 21.00 PM.

I cant be excited. I just dont know why.

With 9 hours time difference for mainland Europe and being an evening race in the US, it is early o'morning here. Just like the Indy ovals that were usually night events in the US. But hey, we have 24-25 races, so you can easily skip a few. And then some more and then you find you have your life back.

And yet another night race... Again... Having cars run in broad daylight for a change would be nice.

Well, poo.

There go my last hopes of getting a race in Indianapolis.
The track layout looks better than I ever expected a Vegas track to look (or Indy) but it’s not 20 miles away from home, so still… poo.

Yeah me too. I get the entertainment value is high, mostly because of the inshidents on the tracks. But I just love old school race tracks more (with a gravel trap please).

And they said a Grand Prix on the strip would never happen.

It does look like a good layout. Someone said Tokyo from Gran Turismo. It definitely had that vibe, though I guess this will be very flat.

Saturday night/Sunday morning?

I'll be honest... I have spent far too long looking at the thread of this title thinking that 'Lost Wages' was the sponsor of the Grand Prix and not a nickname for Las Vegas.

Ah yes. I think you and I have very similar travel tastes (I've been to most of the places you listed), and Dubai is somewhere I really won't go back to. Vegas has never been on my list either, though for F1 I could be tempted if I was doing it as part of a larger US trip.

It hasn't - yet.  And it still may not.  Remember how much we enjoyed the races in New Jersey and Hanoi?

One consolation is that "This too shall pass"...just as it did last time F1 was stupid enough to race in Las Vegas, the shithole of vacuity (courtesy of ensign14)

I do sometimes think that it's interesting that the construction of both Watkins Glen and Elkhart Lake racing circuits were preceded by popular but short lived events using public roads.

If I was trying to build up the case to either construct a new, world-class Grand Prix racing circuit in the Las Vegas area (or renovate an existing one up to modern F1 standards), trying to demonstrate the popularity of the sport by setting up a successful street race event might be one of the ways I'd consider going about it.

Doing so whilst staring the ghosts of the Ceasars Palace race in the face though is, admittedly, quite bold.

But I guess the theory applies wherever there's a plan to quickly expand into regions which don't have such a strong traditional following. Building large, new mega-tracks in the middle of nowhere for an uncertain crowd has been a little hit and miss.

Yeah me too, street circuits and night races, and especially street/night races. I can just about tolerate a couple of them but we will soon be creeping up to around 1/3 of the calendar being street races (Monaco, Baku, Singapore, Jeddah, Miami, Las Vegas and maybe Melbourne/Montreal depending how you see them)

Hockenheim

Nurgburgring

Portimao

Istanbul Park

Mugello

Sepang

Indianapolis

Get these back on the calendar, heck I'd even rather return to Sochi (present circumstances excepting) than go back to Jeddah or Las Vegas.

There is only one street circuit that deserves being on the calendar; Monaco. And only for its heritage alone. The rest I could very much live without.

It’s huge that they managed to get the strip included in a layout. That nails the city’s key location in a way Miami misses.

I’m sure both United States city tracks will generate F1 a ton of money and coverage, but Las Vegas seems more interesting. With the iconic strip setting and the unique hosting time (Saturday race) I expect it to be the become the headline North American venue.

Is there a line up yet on whether Tsunoda will be the guy that wakes up with a Tiger in his room?

You whiners about what time you have to watch it are weak. Half the schedule I have to get up at zero-dark thirty here in California to see the race.

Gonna be fun, see you there if you are going.
