That’s racing..Sainz had his race ended because Ricciardo made a mistake and bumped him into the gravel, while Ricciardo got lucky to be pointing the right direction into the gravel with enough momentum.
I don't think it was refreshing at all, and actually made a really good argument for the tarmac run-offs.
I don't remember any driver who made a mistake getting stuck in the gravel.

maybe they don't care about individual results at this stage and try radically different ideas on the cars. Use weekends as test sessions
Could be try different setups, give GR the better or least risky option as not to knock his confidents.
Makes sense but difficult to say as Merc are not going to admit a really crappy ar with no end.
Let's wait, it is a long season.

Don't think anyone made a quick exit from the gravel though, so were punished for their mistake. That's what is missing with tarmac runoffs, and why I'd certainly like to see less of them.

Okay I'll say "fair enough".
Why would LH and GR cars be so different?
Sincerely speaking - I am just trying to think of an example when this has happened in the past - assuming you are speaking on about LH trying a different set up then GR.
I would think the setups are not exactly the same for sure. Drivers have different driving styles, so setups should complement those differences.
One difference is certain - Russell was running in the end with a "wet" setup, meaning his front wing was (by mistake?) not adjusted during the pit stop for dry tires.
