Once in a while the question arises if there is a future for motorsports or if it is just a dinosaur waiting to go extinct. Younger people they say, aren't interested in cars and racing. Or are they?

Let's find out how old the fans are.

As a survey research professional, I have to point out that you're only going to get an insight into the demographic breakdown of people who are keen enough to participate in a motorsport internet forum. But, I guess, that's probably good enough to get a (slight) insight into how interested younger people might be.

Does a 30 year old tick 30-40 if they feel old but 20-30 if they feel young?

 

Good point. The ranges shouldn't really overlap. Typically, age ranges are presented something like:

 

Under 18

18-24

25-34

35-44

45-54

55-64

65+

 

But I don't think there will be too much problem here - just pick the one that you think you fit into. As you say, if you feel old, pick the  higher range and if you feel young, pick the lower range.

I find it concerning that decisions concerning the rules and regs of F1, may some day be in the hands of those who are not interested in cars, and racing. You can already see hints of this in the "For The Good Of The Show" crowd. Make no mistake however, that attitude is not restricted to "young people".

Pretty sure I said the same last time around, but the demographic around here is older by dint of it being an 'old fashioned' forum.

I imagine the F1 reddits are skewed alot younger.

As a survey research professional, I have to point out that you're only going to get an insight into the demographic breakdown of people who are keen enough to participate in a motorsport internet forum. But, I guess, that's probably good enough to get a (slight) insight into how interested younger people might be.

And undoubtedly this forum has a European, and within that a British, bias - and within that a bias towards Formula One which makes up maybe 2% of all the motor racing that happens in and around Europe.

One of the interesting things about demographic analysis and projection is that there is a natural tendency to look at how a young cohort occupies one end of a spectrum of preferences and then predict that in future their preferences will dominate, whilst overlooking that, in many ways, as the young get older their preferences move towards the centre (sometimes referred to as 'growing up').

One of the first things I was told about survey research and statistics was that research results could show that earnings levels were directly related to shoe size - the higher a persons shoe size, the more likely they were to be a high earner. Then it was pointed out that this interpretation from the data totally ignored gender and the fact that there were more men in higher earning positions and that, generally, men had bigger feet than women.

Most people in that age range grew up with car culture being very prominent, and most also grew up with web forums.

The largest demographic is 30-40- for F1 based on research I'm fairly sure. Interestingly Formula Es biggest demographics are 18-24 and 24-30.

I think that "growing up" is highly over-rated, and should be avoided at all costs.

And even within this forum, pretty sure the average age is somewhat higher on TNF's or Paddock Club's side than Racing Comments.

Disconcerting to think I'm lumped together with 80 and 90 year-olds.
