"Eloquent" and "right" are two different things though, just to be clear.

But you can be eloquent and have an opinion, right?

Nice to see Vettel out and about, makes me sad to think about his impending retirement hopefully he stays in the sport as a pundit, he's obviously a super fan of F1.

I can honestly see him in Formula E in a season or two. Who knows mercedes could field both him and Lewis as team mates... I'd watch that season.

I'd also watch Mika Häkkinen Vs Schumachers brain in a jar piloting a gen 3 FE car.......too soon?

Seb nearly got suckered into thinking QT is a serious programme, the presence of Suella Braverman lauging at anything he said shoud say so much more.

Back in the 1990s QT *was* a serious programme, but since then British politics - like politics in many other countries - has ossified into pantomime populism in which dialogue is discouraged in favour of shouting/laughing/sneering at your opponent for cheap applause.

Seb has spent the day in jail preparing for the show. https://twitter.com/...804095499898886

Is Fiona Bruce really that scary?

"Norman Stanley Vettel, you have pleaded guilty of the charges brought by this court, and it is now my duty to pass sentence..." :rotfl:

I'm not sure I've seen such a transformation of a reputation of a driver since I've been watching F1...

Make no mistake, he was hated (or certainly disliked intensely) by the majority of F1 fans. Just goes to show that people don't like success (or continuous success). Sure, he had his bratty moments but I've always thought that he came across as a top bloke.

I think he will have a great future in promoting sustainability and would love to see him involved in the running of the FIA or F1.

As soon as the politicians start yapping the quality of the programme takes a dive.

I though Vettel did well.

To be fair, I think when people say they "hate" a driver, it's in that context. It's they way they perform their job and the things they say and do in relation to that job. I've seen many comments attesting to him being a "really nice person", but people comment on motorsport forums in relation to a persons motorsport career and image.

That said, I've disliked many of his actions and his attitude during his stint at RB, but at no time did I consider that I "hated" him for it.

Oh, and I'd prefer to see him step away from motorsport when he moves on and enjoy a great future doing the other stuff that he likes.

'Hated' in a motorsport context is what I meant. And he was certainly that.

I liked Seb when he was at Toro Rosso, really hated him during the red bull & ferrari years, now he's at Aston and all I can say is: Seb Vettel, what a great human being.

Given that the same thing happened to Max last year, I've started to think it's an RB thing.

To be fair, she does that to every single person. Between interrupting them, of course.

Awful host.

Indeed AG. What with the outlook of most of the others on the panel and in the audience, I could hardly bear to watch this, despite being a fan of Vettel from the Toro Rosso days, (though I do wish he'd comb his hair and stop looking as though he's applying for the vacant post of circuit tramp at Lydden!)

I thought he was great and his opinions very similar to my own. So completely correct ofc.

I used to dislike him a lot so I wonder if he changed over the years or my perception of him has.

I think it's a little of column A and a little of column B.  He has grown as a person, and so have I, so I no longer dislike him as I did during the Red Bull days, but I don't know that I disliked him them so much as just disliked single-team dominance and the lousy racing of that time.  I think it takes a lot of bravery to walk in and invite a free hit but express yourself eloquently anyway, and I am entirely in admiration of him doing it.  It's a very nice feeling to be able to be increasingly positive about a celebrity nowadays, since so often we have to experience the opposite.

People disliked Vettel for the most ridiculous reasons ever.  Like his 'pointer finger' gesture.  People went CRAZY over that, as if it was the most arrogant thing ever. lol  So much of it was that he came in and basically stole Lewis' thunder when Lewis was supposed to be the new hotshot.

Vettel has always been super down to earth and one of the funniest guys on the grid.

Vettel and me share the passion for the same football team (Nur die SGE!). So that's a plus point in my book. And he is probably the biggest F1 nerd in F1. As character I always found him likeable, although the finger gesture was kinda annoying. But by far not annoying enough to change my mind on him and who doesn't have some annoying habits? I have quite a lot of them.

The driver Vettel is a different thing though. I found him overrated in his Red Bull years and still believe that he was flattered by Newey's cars. But who cares? The biggest part of his driving years is behind him and the biggest part of his living years is hopefully still to come. So that's the important part.

I don't have any doubt that he will continue to use his prominence and contacts for means he finds important, such as the environment or LGBT rights. I think he is to be applauded for this.

Yeah, people do tend to hang on the silliest of reasons to dislike drivers....

I recall Marcus Simmons writing in Autosport a few years back now regarding Seb, who he'd covered during Seb's Formula BMW/FRenault UK days.  He said that there always were two Sebs - the guy who got out of the car after a collision who was like a landmine waiting to be set off, and the Seb away from the car who was a funny, warm guy.

I think it's not so much the reasons for disliking drivers are silly, but the explanations for justifying that dislike are silly.

The true reasons for liking or disliking someone are often subconscious and what you reply for a question "why" is rarely the real answer. Our brains are great at making up justifications.

For me, I think he started off as a very talented driver who had something to prove - that he was the best ever. That's the kind of attitude that both appeals to and is fosted by the Red Bull team. But it's an attitude that does not always endear you to people. Once the winning stopped and he became aware that he wasn't going to be at the top of the heap anymore, he started to come to terms with the fact that he had made an impact, that he was one of the greatest of all time but, perhaps, not THE greatest and that he did not have to prove his talent to anyone anymore. At that point he mellowed as a driver and reverted to the true personality that was always there.

Honestly, while what he's doing outside of the car these days makes me want to warm up to him I'm struggling to really do that because I'm still not over my dislike for him as a driver. For now I've settled on "somewhat begrudging respect".

I was never fan of some of his on-track behavior like Multi-21 and smacking the back of Hamilton's car under the SC and pretending he was brake checked.  But he's always come across as someone with a sense of humor and a good head on his shoulders so I never "disliked" him.  He certainly had some awesome driving do go along with a few bonehead moves.  You have to admire a person who will go on a program like that and pull it off.

Edit:  one thing he said that I don't hear about much but I admired at the time is when he won his fourth title.  He was out there doing donuts and such when he went on the radio and said something to the effect of "remember these good times because they could all be gone one day".  He was right to note that.  Continued success is not guaranteed and I appreciated that he was soaking in the moment.

I think he had a bit of a slow start and the first answer he gave seemed to just be padding to give the impression he had something to say. But I think he settled into it and gave better answers later on.

Considering a lot of the questions were about domestic issues it wasn't going to be in his particular arena of expertise. It was Interesting hearing his personal thoughts of the morality and sustainability of motor racing, I guess being a young father you really need to think about where we will be in 50 years.

I'd quite like to hear more from some of the more conscientious drivers on the grid as F1 really is a grotesque and old fashioned sport in some ways and is taking steps to be more inline with current standards and values.

Someone mentioned above how it's the old guard who are more outspoken in contrast to the younger drivers seem to be more willing to tow the line as I presume there's still so much they want to achieve within the sport and would prefer not to rock the boat.

Up with this sort of thing!

Just watched it on iPlayer.  I felt it was a bit too parochial for what he had to say and he'd have been better served on a programme that was considering wider issues.

Mind you it was worth watching just to see what a thick Johnson brown nosing CTUN that Suella Braverman is !! Fkuc me , she's dim ! Sorry, this language should be with the lairy adults in the Paddock Club but sometimes you just have to let go ............

He beat Webber so the Aussies had a problem with him. He won championships when they 'should' have belonged to other popular drivers so their fans had a problem with him him. He won in RB when a lot of people had a real axe to grind about RB being 'a stupid drinks company'. He then topped it all off by having the cheek to be German.

In the end he won what he won, wasn't the very best driver ever but a damned good one who put in some great drives over the years, and appears to have come out the other side of 'fame' as a lovely and well meaning bloke. It is what it is.

He was always hard to like. Never disliked him as much as others did bit at the same time still dont think he has properly grown up. The underpants thing was typically childish. He looks tired and over it, wouldn't mind him moving on tbh.

Btw the idea motorsport is sustainable or has any real impact on the environment is asinine.
