Dear all, as I am pondering buying a 1/18th version of the Tyrrell 012 driven by Stefan Bellof at Monaco in 1984, I have been puzzled, while researching, by all the livery changes the car went through from session to session, that weekend. Stefan's car was deep purple during practice, black on race day - but even the black version of the car carries different sponsors from session to session. And that's without even taking into account the car Martin Brundle was driving in! 

 

I know Ken did sponsorship deals from race to race, that year, trying to make ends meet, but does anyone have more information on those livery changes at Monaco?

I don’t think that car was ever purple.  I would describe it as maroon.

I've got a model of his race car. Very nice thing it is, though the driver looks horribly exposed.

 

I always understood that Brundle's was purple/maroon and Bellof's was black. But I suppose the spare car was painted in Brundle's livery that weekend. When was Brundle's practice crash?

Brundle started the weekend in his burgundy Yardley Gold and DeLonghi liveried #3

 

 

Bellof's car was black #4 with main sponsors Maredo and Discostar (French beauty products)

 

At some point on Thursday Bellof drove the spare car (maybe just for a shakedown, or maybe his own chassis was being worked on?) which was (as PayasYouRace speculates) in Brundle livery for that particular weekend. You can see the Brundle name and Union Jack under the rollbar behind Bellof's head.

 

After Brundle's big practice crash he was declared medically unfit to continue for the rest of the weekend, so Tyrrell was down to 1 car for the race.

Presumably DeLonghi was one of Tyrrell's important sponsors and so it was critical to have the logos on the car in the actual race...

 

So Delonghi moved to the 'sidepod' of Bellof's #4 in place of Discostar,..and Discostar relocated to the previously empty front wings.

Interestingly, in most of the photos from '84 F1 season, Bellof seems to be wearing Rothmans overalls when racing the Tyrrell. I think on Monaco raceday he may Actually have been wearing a rain jacket (a shiny red one!) on top of his overalls

Can anyone confirm this? Seems odd that this would be allowed by 1984

Funny you should mention that.  Long story, as it usually is, but the tub was repaired by Jordan’s composites people and the car does exist today.  If this was Facebook I'd ask Liaz Jakhara to take up the story.

It seems that at least it was stored for a while (butchered and heavily dismanteled) in Tyrrell´s backyard

To be fair, it looks repairable, though I'm not surprised Tyrrell put it away - I think the professional term is "total economic loss", i.e. it's cheaper to build a new one than to repair the damage.

Thanks alot! I had been looking for a picture of Stefan wearing this rain jacket for quite a while now.

I just wonder if this jacket was some kind of official racewear, or if he simply used a jacket which he also used to wear in private.

Something that has annoyed me over the years,, lets be kitted out in flame resistant suits,, then wear a  flammable synthetic raincoat over it. Drrr!
