Ray, I'm calling you out on your post 50 comment.. If that's the best you can come up wiith after all the effort Darren has put in to create the Double V8 tribute then I wish you'd keep your thoughts to yourself.

I'm not claiming any credit/ recognition in this huge undertaking of Darren's. However, early in the gestation period of this project, a mutual friend, Louis Santin, asked me for as much info/ photos as I had on the original. Limited as it was, I sent through what I could lay my hands on to Louis and he on-forwarded to Darren. Apart from a few snippets of info back from Louis, who built the engines for the car, the rest is Darren's effort (as far as I know).

Anyway, I'll let you get back to the shed to begin creating your 'perfect' Double V8 copy.

Malcolm Oastler Ralt RT1 had a busy weekend out front in the Q & R field, although didn't run the Sunday afternoon race.

There's enough drivers running in the Regularity classes these days that the 'Tin Top' group was formed in recent years. Here is Paul Flint's Sebring-inspired MGC

Historic Winton has wrapped up for the 47th time. Good racing, lots to see during glorious North-Eastern Victorian, Autumn weather to boot.

And given I'm not long home, just time for a couple of snaps.

Both from Saturday morning Regularity Two's practice

Josh Lowing having a 'Works' drive in Shane Bowden's Lolus Holden. By Sunday afternoon Josh was well and truly flying beating his nominated time for the Reg category by at least 3 seconds.

2024-A7-Historic-Winton-01-TNF-JL.jpg

In the spirit of South Australia's Eldred Norman of 75 odd years ago, Darren Visser has created this tribute of Norman's Double V8. Hence why it's number 16...

2024-A7-Historic-Winton-02-TNF-DV.jpg

Stephen

Woo-hoo that would have been worth the trip alone! How did it go, sound? I didn’t realise Louis was involved Stephen.

Huge plus to have the Double Eight ‘back’ in the context of the various 2027-28 AGP Centenary celebrations.

Clearly, Stephen, you joined TNF after the rot started to set in...

It was a more genteel place, much more to my liking, in the earlier years, and I still prefer to believe it's possible to recapture those times and that attitude.

So when I posted 'They must have finished it in a hurry,' I was merely acknowledging that the desire to get it to the meeting meant taking apparent shortcuts. Like, for instance, the lack of an engine cover. There was no idea in my mind of criticism as I fully appreciate how hard it is to put this sort of thing together and, after all, the great Winton meeting is but once a year.

I would always be the first to appreciate the tremendous effort which must have gone into achieving what's been achieved. Merely finding the right wheels could be a task, much less putting the rest of it all together and fabricating the exterior as closely as they've followed Eldred Norman's original. The team which has done this deserves commendation.

But I must apologise for not checking, for in the form in which it's been re-created the wheels weren't drilled. And indeed, Norman did race it in an unfinished form, too, for it was to have a neat grille added...

0524normandoublev8onroad.jpg
Double Eight in road form. Yes, the wheels were undrilled at this time, while nice touches like some finishing-off, the grille and louvres on the sides are there.

...in its early life. The information I had was that the wheels were drilled when he converted it to a single-seater, though this photo seems to make that an unclear suggestion...

0524normanmaybewoodside.jpg
Unfinished. No grille in this form, at Woodside* in October, 1949, the car had raced there also at the December 27 meeting of 1948. Are the extra holes in the wheels here? The car behind it is the Davison TC Special.

...and this one certainly puts it into the 'more than questionable' category:

0524norman50agp.jpg
1950 Australian Grand Prix. The lightening holes in the wheels are certainly evident here, as also is yet another form of grille on the front, Harry Neale driving.

So why am I so interested in the holes in the wheels?

The first pics I ever looked at in detail of the Eldred Norman Double Eight (that was the family's name for the car) were when I was tasked with laying out Terry Walker's Around the Houses book in 1979. This picture really brought it graphically to me that the wheels had those extra holes in them:

0524andersondoublev8.jpg
Single-seater. Syd Anderson, stuck with a flat tyre in the Double Eight during a race in WA.

So I am sorry you took offence, Stephen. That was not the way of TNF years ago, maybe I'm too stuck on living in that more genteel past?

But all of this raises some questions, which you might be able to answer with your connection with the owner. In the pic from Woodside there are small pieces jutting out from each side of the nose, what might they be for?

* This photo is incorrectly captioned as being at Nurioopta in my story about Norman in Motor Racing Australia.

They must have finished it in a hurry...

They haven't drilled the extra holes in the Dodge truck wheels.

Ray,

So you are saying you were wrong, yes?

There are TNFers throughout Australia on the floor, p!ssing themselves with laughter, at the implication that your TNF approach is genteel, particularly with some people.

For the record, I gave you my view on your modus operandi by phone just now.

I'm not a prewar fan or an Australian special fan unless its post-war .

I have not been to an Historic Winton since I last raced there in 2003,previous to that I raced there each year from  the mid 1980s be it in the Elfin Mono,Brabham BT21c,Porsche 911 or a Mustang .

Looking at the fields that are of interest to me group M/O, NB/NC and group Q/P.

The fields seem to have died of in Group M/O  very few Elfins,Lotus,Brabhams as the NB/NC any Mustangs ?

Is there a reason for the above no longer running at this event ,in the past there was always strong fields of group M/O and the Mustangs for me were the cream of the event !

What's found in the Historic Winton display areas can be interesting too

One of these was a police car in its early life.

2024-A7-Historic-Winton-11.jpg

This one had me slightly curious when spotted on circuit during the Sunday lunchtime parade laps. Later finding it when back behind pit straight. It's a very rare Nash Healey that essentially been resto-modded. No sign of the Nash 6 anymore when the bonnet gets opened, 327 Chev now.

The leather-clad Motorcycle brigade are just as passionate, but had to sit out their scheduled Saturday afternoon runs for the meeting to catch up on lost time.

So these couple of snaps show 2 events from Sunday morning as they come through the sweeper and head toward 'Tank'

It was during this sidecar race that I pulled the camera away after shooting towards Tank and realised there was someone laying on the ground, thrown off the outfit. Fortunately soon standing up.

Pretty standard worldwide penalty for passenger falling off is a slab of beers.

Doing it at a Classic/Historic meeting will ensure ridicule for years.

Saturday afternoon's J, K & L race got rather complicated.

Peter Fagan Cooper got a blinder of a start, from Conor Ryan MG Holden and Graeme Raper Monoskate...

2024-A7-Historic-Winton-19-TNF.jpg

But all to no avail as the race was red-flagged, after Graeme Raper spun Monoskate at Turn 1 and as the following photo shows cars went all directions, despite GR getting back to the correct direction quickly (but pulled off the circuit). Abby Wingett was in a wounded 23 Elfin and as it would turn out when the car got off the circuit and she got out of the car, so was she, Abby limped away from the car. The medico quickly attended to her and the clean up began with the tractor lifting the Elfin onto the tow truck.

2024-A7-Historic-Winton-20-TNF.jpg

This one shows the restart... Peter Fagan's Cooper overheated on the startline and went to the infield and parked with Graeme Raper. So neither restarted.

2024-A7-Historic-Winton-21-TNF.jpg

I happened to be in the Raper garage early Sunday morning when Abby appeared ('her' car had been in the next garage spot), sporting a pair of crutches to help get around.. She was quite philosophical about what had unfolded, putting it down as a racing incident. Graeme to his credit admitted he'd gone in too hot (and that may well have something to do with young Conor in front of him in Greg Smith's car).

All I can do now is wish Abby and the Elfin ( Bill Hemming Elfin Heritage collection) a speedy recovery.

Posted concurrently on the TNF Historic Winton / Austin Seven racing in Australia threads

After competing in the NSW VSCC All Historic Meetings held at Amaroo Park, Austin 7 Club life member Bill Sheehan suggested to the committee of the Austin 7 Club of Victoria that the club could organise a similar meeting at the Winton circuit in North East Victoria.

The first Austin 7 Club Historic Winton was held in June 1977 and Bill took on the role as secretary of the meeting responsible for the car events. It is now in its 47th year and is the longest continuous historic motor race meeting in Australia.

Checking the program for this year's meeting and comparing it with the first meeting, I believe there was only one car that competed last weekend that also ran at the first meeting back in 1977. It was the orange Ulster Austin 7 entered by Danny Morling. The story of this car goes back to 1974, when I was living in London and had collected some genuine Ulster parts and a new body shell from Stuart Rolt. Having then acquired a restored Ulster chassis for myself, I then suggested to John Whitehouse that he needed a project and convinced him to buy the duplicate Ulster parts from me.

John and co builder of the ‘Whitmor’, Bill Morling, will be remembered by members of the UK 750 Motor Club. John, in the ‘Whitmor’ finished in fourth place in the 1967 'Goodacre Trophy’ a 22 race series even though he only competed in six races and won four of them.

TJ-A7-1-6-24-Whitehouse-750-MC-Bulletin-

Both John’s orange car and my red car were brought back to life in Bill Morling’s workshop, and finished in time to run at the first Historic Winton in June 1977.

Event 22 was a Sports Austin 7 event.(and note Mike Hailwood listed in the Motorcycles too)

Note event 22 continues to the top of the next page.

TJ-A7-1-6-24-Historic-Winton-1977-Regula

To complete the story: when John Whitehouse moved to Lake Tahoe in the US he left the orange Ulster and the supercharged Ulster raced by Cyril Dickason in three Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island from 1930. The car now in pieces, was a project that he had purchased in South Australia with Bill Morling. They are now owned by Bill's sons, Danny and Lucas. The collection of Austin 7s also includes the ‘Whitmor’.

Thanks to Ian Smith for giving me permission to use his 2024 Historic Winton photo.

Tony Johns.

The Snape's brought along the Eldred Norman Zephyr 6 powered special to this year's Historic Winton. It was not being run, hence it was displayed with the body removed to reveal some of its inner workings.

A great machine...

And with sufficient grunt to frighten brave men. Interesting that Norman stated that he would not risk himself to drive it to its potential, hence he implored Keith Rilstone to take it over.

In Rilstone's hands it gained the Raymond Mays head and dual leading shoe front brakes and he was able to frighten a lot of the Cooper Climax runners of the late fifties.

Of course, its potential for making a raucous noise was pure Eldred Norman. So nice of Graeme and Robyn to take it to the meeting.

Great pics, Mark...

I have some that I've never scanned somewhere which show the chassis arrangement in full, that's where it really shines.

While the basic concept was copied from a hillclimb car built by Harold Clisby, there's a lot of difference between a 350cc Douglas flat twin and a rorty supercharged Zephyr engine, both in power and in space consumption.

Over both days there's different carpark classics to be found.

John drove his Morgan from Sydney, fuel pump excepted he enjoyed his trip. This example having been raced by David McKay at the first Warwick Farm meeting of December 1960.

In Australia you can usually dismiss a Cobra as yet another replica. But this 289 was different and appears to have come from Thames Ditton.

It took a fair while to proceed down the queue for scrutineering.

The top bay was the only one operating.

Bob and I caught up with several of his new playmates in Formula Ford while we were crawling along.

Malcolm had put his Formula Ford through scrutineering earlier, thinking he had heaps of time.

When he got there in the Ralt, the line went back for miles.

Here he's all kitted up for the Q and R race in the Ralt and has needed to jump the queue so that he didn't miss his grid call.

What engine's in Peter's new jigger?

For a while there a bunch of blokes were putting ex-HQ sedan bits into things like that.

The ASP awaits the delivery of pistons.

Not to mention a new floor pan, clean up of various panels with sundry dents, plating of suspension bits and pieces ...... the list gets longer the more Mr Peacock looks at it, oh and a higher roll bar to suit a taller driver... and possibly/probably a new younger driver.  Not intending to sell it but would like it back on the track...no use it sitting in the shed and I have a new toy to play with.

Pistons required, the rest is optional. Besides that Marks retired!

News just in from the Austin 7 Club about no motorcycle racing to run at Historic Winton this year.

Media Release
17 January 2025
48th Historic Winton - 24th & 25th May 2025
Presented by the Austin 7 Club Inc (Victoria)
Major Sponsor:
Shannons
 Revamped Historic Winton Program
Announced for 2025

The 48th Historic Winton, to be held on 24th and 25th May 2025 at Winton Motor Raceway, will run without motorcycles for the first time.

John Kessner from the Austin 7 Club, chairperson of the organising committee, said plans were underway to incorporate additional car racing events into the existing program, broadening the scope of this iconic Australian historic motorsport meet.

He said that for many years, the event has seen fruitful collaboration between the Austin 7 Club Inc (Vic) and the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria (HMRAV) to include motorcycle races in the program.  However, upgraded safety standards and stringent track permit conditions set by the motorcycle insurers will require some modifications to the Winton Motor Raceway facilities.

“These works could impact Historic Winton car races and the feasibility of other motorsport events at the venue and therefore will require lengthy deliberation,” Mr Kessner said.  “We have, therefore, suspended the inclusion of motorcycle racing at our event.  The Austin 7 Club Inc (Vic) will continue to work with all parties in the hope that an appropriate solution can be established for motorcycles in the future.

“We understand that this news will sadden motorcycle competitors and spectators, as it saddens us,” Mr Kessner said. “We pay tribute to our friends at the HMRAV and express our gratitude for their contributions to Historic Winton over the decades.  We wish the HMRAV the best in their other competitions.

“The absence of motorcycle races opens up new opportunities, allowing for the expansion of current races and the addition of new car categories. The event committee is actively exploring multiple options and will provide updates on these changes in the near future.”

Historic Winton is Australia’s longest-running and most popular historic race event, having started in 1977 at Winton Motor Raceway. As one of Victoria’s largest regional sporting events, it attracts competitors and spectators from across the nation.

Enthusiasts looking to be a part of this landmark event are encouraged to volunteer for half a day and enjoy the remainder of the event for free.

Those interested can register by emailing
historicwinton@gmail.com with their name and contact details.

This would, surely, have a varied impact...

While there'd definitely be people who went along only for the motorbikes, others are turned away by the noise the bikes make. And, of course. with ever more cars out there becoming 'histoic' there will be more opportunity for them all to get a run.

My own experience suggests that mixed car/bike meetings satisfy neither party.

The bikes are extremely oil sensitive on the racing surface - which would seem to be worse with historics/classics. No facts to back this up, just observation.

The type of people running historic cars really don't gel with bike people. And i'm being tactful here...Personal experience of being screamed at by a fishwife to take your bloody bikes away immediately was at least memorable. Separate pit areas help.

I hear on the grapevine that safety standards for bike circuits in Oz have had a review.  With possibly more circuits in doubt.

Way back in the mid-sixties Sandown ran a '2+4' meeting as some kind of experiment...

I don't think they ever did it again.

Bathurst's Easter meetings were clearly segregated, bikes Friday and Saturday, cars Sunday and Monday, very few people were there for both.

United we stand, divided we fall?

I'm not sure that bikes make 'bad' noise and cars make 'good'! Surely beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

They did run the occasional Sandown 2+4 meeting in the 70's as well. The mists of time preclude memories as to why they ceased.

This has nothing to do with conflict between the bikes and cars.

It's the Insurance industry raising their powerful heads again.

The 2+4 meeting at Winton in May has always been a much anticipated highlight for both categories.

Your experience is exactly the opposite of what I've seen at the Historic Winton meeting over the numerous recent times I've been there.

Being there with cars that occupy the long continuous garages right next to the motorcycles, we've been constantly aware of their presence.

Our pathway to scrutineering and formup passes directly in front of the whole bike garage, and there is always mature sensible awareness of the different needs of the two classes of racing, and everyone from both camps understands the extreme privilege that we share in being able to attend such a meeting.

I have NEVER seen any animosity being displayed between the two groups, in fact the camaraderie with the riders and their cohort of spectators is something that we all enjoy with relish, and is always seen as something positive which makes this a special event and unlike other 'car-only' meetings.

Sad news indeed.

I agree with Lynton 100%. Having competed at that meeting five or so times and spectated at many more the Winton 2+4 flavour has always been fabulous in every respect: sight, sound, vibe, variety. The Lot.

That CAMS Ltd appointed a very senior insurance industry executive as CEO 18 months or so ago says everything about the environment in which we find ourselves.

I was at a Sandown 2+4 when still @ school, so 1973 or 74 perhaps and vaguely recall a bike fatality? No time to check that at present.
