People need to lay off Hamilton. He is still the GOAT and being beaten by Russell is not that surprising anyway.

It's less about Hamilton, more about how phenomenal a one lapper Russell is.

In full agreement with this! Negative comments are far too quickly punted out these days and this is the way I look at most intrateam battles.
If one driver is doing a little better than the other, why focus on the driver doing worse instead of praising the one driving out of his skin?

Russell has already proven in previous years that he's an incredible qualifier and has clearly carried this over to his new environment.

Max has solid qualifying equipment this year, a slower driver than him put it on pole already, so how many poles do you think he will get this year?

Hold on a minute, let me check my crystal ball...

More seriously, I don't understand the point of the question. Max got the friday pole in Imola. Perez got the pole in Saudi Arabia. If the car is fast, either driver can get poles and I'd put money on Verstappen to have more of them than Perez.

He got two poles last year, in a car that wasn't much closer to the front than this year's Merc.

one of those was because he binned it and caused a red flag

While Leclerc has had a really good run in qualifying this year, I think it's a bit premature to say that he is the best qualifier in F1 (as opposed to he is currently doing the best - which even then you could debate). I mean, I'd say he wasn't the best qualifying performer last year overall and certain things may have shifted in his favour this year - e.g. the car suits him; other contenders have cars that don't suit them so much; his team-mate has underperformed. These are all contingent things that can change quite quickly. But the point is, I would look at more than just this year so far to declare someone The Best.

Leclerc put the 2020 Ferrari with 30-40 hp less than everybody, 2 tenths away from a pole on the second Bahrain race, done on a oval. He was 4th.

He is the best qualifier since what he did in qualification at Brazil 2018.

I was wrong about Ferrari saving a set of softs - they did run a new set in Q2.

So Ferrari is 1H,2M and RB 2H, 1M.

Everyone will probably start on Mediums.

Baku has usually been a 1 stop race although last year it could have been a 2 stop race but the pit lane was closed at an inopportune moment.

Maybe it'll be a bit tight on tyres during the race today?

If there's a few safety cars it will probably be a solid one stop. Maybe more marginal if there's no safety cars.

I feel this race is either going to be very well behaved or complete madness.

According to Merc, Hamilton has been running experimental setups, extra sensors, and other things on the different race weekends this season, so I guess you could say their performances are incomparable since you can't account for all the variables. I think Toto is a clever driver manager (nowadays) and that this is all by design...To protect both drivers by not allowing them to be directly compared.

Sounds like a great excuse. Needs someone to actually go to the team and drill for some details.

Toto is just stating facts. All F1 drivers are grown up men and they dont need their team prinicpals running around to the media giving excuses for their performances.

I don't get why some get het up about Q stats. There are no points awarded for starting at the front, and so far Leclerc has failed to convert a pole position into a win. Maybe they should be concentrating on a race setup rather than a qualifying one.

I wish someone asked Russell on why he doesn't share the burden of experimenting. That'll force some answer. :p

Is he speaking?

what do you think?

That it was telepahtic communication between Toto and the reporter that was then written down?

He didn`t actualy says that only Hamilton is experimating things...

If you read carefully, and it`s the way i see it, he says the experiments are going bad for Hamilton and not for Rusell.

So both are experimenting... as i guess drivers of other teams too...

So another bad excuse...

Fair enough, I guess we will see. It would be a record if he doesn't get a pole all season and still wins the WC  :drunk:

I think Lauda did it in 84. But as the points are scored on Sunday it matters not one jot how many poles he gets, if he is winning the races.

With a more understeery car it’s harder for better drivers to stand out, gaps between teammates always seem to get smaller. Maybe because understeer is better to handle compared to oversteer.

Not true elite drivers will always pull a gap on lesser ones regards of how the car is.
