Yes, I have a friend who worked several for several seasons on the British Hillclimb scene with DJ Racecars. One of their drivers at the time was Alex Summers - who I believe was driving the McMurty this weekend when Chilton wasn't. Anyway, my friend would often say around the time of Goodwood that one of the guys in that could easily beat Heidfeld's time if they were invited - but there was the feeling that the organisers of the event didn't want the record set by an F1 driver in an F1 car to be beaten by someone most people will never have heard of in a similarly unfamiliar car.

I'm adjacent to the Hillclimb community and yeah it's proffered that the current top class cars would be capable of a ~37.X. The McMurtry is ~1000bhp/1000kg (~1.0 hp/kg). Alex Summer's current DJ Firestorm is ~610bhp/420kg (~1.4 hp/kg)

Personally, i'd LOVE it if Goodwood also served as a 'Blue Riband' round for the championship class of the BHC. But people go there to see Rene Arnoux, the famous race driver. Not Wallace Menzies, the quarrying mogul.

If Goodwood were to be a proper speed hill-climb, wouldn't it need a lot more permanent safety features, like armco barriers or tyre walls?  MS-UK surely wouldn't licence it as a hill-climb venue as it stands?  I think it operates in a sort of half-way house at the moment, and the the Murty McMurtyFace thingy may have just damaged that status.

Bouley Bay and Val des Terres are both championship rounds. Neither have permanent safety features. There's very little armco on either climb.

In some places there are. The outside of Radio is a classic example.

Mansell never bothered with the FOS for years, I wonder what changed his mind.

Judging by how emotional he seemed, I'm wondering if he's stayed away because he felt distant from it all? Mansell is at his best when being cheered by the faithful, and I mean no disrespect because at his very best he was a match for anyone.  Mansell-Mania was a real thing, and apparently still is. Lovely to see him interact with the crowd.

However, moment of the weekend was Wayne Rainey. Got tears in my eye.

Absolutely love the British Hillclimb Championship and enjoy tremendously watching the open wheel class with the fastest guys. I think one driver with such a car won the Fos once, but was not faster than Nick. With today's cars, I don't know.

The Speirling has that big advantage of high downforce in slow corners which none of the conventional cars can match. No real slow corners at Goodwood though so it mainly came into effect at the launch, I'd expect a big advantage at some of the twistier tracks.
