Key part: "Alpine is aiming to have 30% of its workforce female within the next five years, up from the current 12% in 2022".

This is a good move surely.

But they shouldn’t leave the ‘theys’ out of this push for equality.

Out of the entire article, that's the only part I potentially don't like. I think the rest is fantastic.

I don’t like these quotas that organizations set as targets. Just identify the possible discriminatory practices that are in place within your organization and eradicate them.

Whatever the sex ratio ends up being is fine as long as it is based in meritocracy. I’d rather have 95-5 without discrimination than 60-40 achieved through active discrimination.

I hope this is more successful than the Alpine (nee Renault) driver academy

A significant problem with the meritocracy idea is that it assumes that all have equal opportunities.

Women in motor racing (outside of PR/office duties) face prejudice from all angles. Men who see them as reducing their own opportunities, men & women that hold archaic beliefs that women just don't belong, etc.

While stating a goal to have 30% women in your team is admirable and encouraging, it doesn't directly address the societal pressures that women are subjected to when trying to enter/work in this field.

Additionally, if the percentage of the labour force (those working or wanting to work in the field) is lower than 30% women then the goal is not about access/equality but more tokenism/virtue signalling.

As for the necessity of the “quota”, women in Motorsport is chicken and the egg issue. Even in a “meritocratic” system, if you start with 12 female employees and 88 male employees, the very fact that there are only 12 female employees is something that turns off other women from the idea of participating, even if they were fully qualified. Not everyone wants to be a “martyr” in loose terms of course dealing with the usual gender discrimination tropes in the workplace. When choosing your career, why pick something where only a handful of women are succeeding when you can pick something with a much smaller likelihood of gender based discrimination. Life isn’t just about “do whatever you set your mind to”. Most people are far more pragmatic than that. They go down roads that have already been traveled in their favor.

The problem with your reasoning is that that 95-5 ratio is there due to active discrimination.

Quotas are stupid and clearly way of enforcing discrimination via a legal thing.
