It is Race Day! We are at Silverstone today, some of us spiritually, others of our number literally - have a good time in what looks at the moment like much nice weather than yesterday when we had a thrillingly tense qualifying session shaking out a bit of a surprising pole sitter:

Starts local time 3PM and for once, is NOT clashing with the Wimbledon Men's Single's Final, hooray. Here are the times for lights out around the world:

Oh and this is happening - anyone know what time?

Sebastian Vettel will drive Nigel Mansell's title winning #F1 car from 1992, the Williams FW14B, using carbon neutral fuel.

It's also his birthday. Happy Birthday, Sebastian! You seem a really good egg and I hope it's a good 'un for you out there.

Ooooh.

1155BST UPDATE: Radar, below, shows showers out to the west now into the W Midlands & tracking E/ESE. The FIA's forecast guidance for teams has now been revised to cater for a broadly higher potential (60%) of shower risk at the circuit by race start...

Rain or shine, I feel that Verstappen will wrap it up today. Car and driver are too good together when it's all working properly.

Ooh can I be the first to interject then looming controversy? The FIA are investigating the fact some teams may be using 'flexi floors' to run lower whilst getting around porpoising, a change to the rules incoming. Of course Toto was shocked to hear some teams were flouting the rules like this. Shovlin was more circmspect, saying that it could level the playing field and allow them to run closer to the front  -  at least he was not pulling punches as to who he thinks is doing it!

Sorry still can't work out how to post the link from the autosport front page.

Isnt "flexi floors" bad for the porpoising? Were not the 2nd floors stats put in to stabalise the floors and minmise porpoising?🙃

Would this be a change of rules or a change on how to check that rules are being conformed to? If it's the former, shocking decision by the FIA if they were to do it half way through the season.

On the other hand, if some teams are breaking the rule, I hope they get sanctioned. And ideally in a transparent manner and not via some backdoor deal....

Thanks and I don’t know :( I’m currently watching Porsche supercup stuff just in case. In previous years, I remember Alonso doing his vintage car run just before the drivers’ parade because he misses the bus.

He really hustles that thing!

They must be talking about the Mercedes floor flexing in Baku?

It looks like a change in testing to catch the suspect areas.

Pit stop time loss last year seemed to be about 18.8–19.1s on average, ranging from 17.7s to 21.7s.

(V)SC pit stop time loss between safety car lines in 2020 seemed to be about 12.6s on average, ranging from 9.4s to 16.6s. This year's (V)SC reference lap time may be different though.

Yeah, that was great. Some drivers you just know you could throw in at any period of racing and they would perform, and Alonso is one of them.

I've just also seen it in the Merc technical topic (which you already commented in by the way) So you know that it was picked up by stewards at Silverstone and no it wasn't the Mercedes cars it was detected in.

Did anyone see the flying car in F2? A perfect example of why sausage kerbs should be banned. FYI It flew through the air across the corner and landed on top of the car which forced him off, landing in a similar fashion to Vestappen Hamilton last year, only at a much faster speed.

Bucketed down here in South Wales all morning until about 10.30am, I guess it’s making it’s way over.

(That’s about 170ish miles for non-uk folk!)

I would like a Sainz win, a drivers first win is always good, and for the good of the championship a Verstappen DNF or low points finish. However I fully expect Verstappen to soon be in front and then he will run away.

Actually I would really like a Hamilton win but that isn't going to happen.

Edit: I've just looked at the betting odds and Verstappen is 8/11 on and Hamilton is 20/1

LeClerc or Sainz win would be great for either championship.

I think Hamilton could be a surprise winner.

My radar seems to show the band hitting Silverstone around 2.30, which would have been perfect for a 2pm start. Grr.

With the gap being so long, what are folk at the track doing between the PSC and F1? Drinking?

Sky did say they would show Seb's 92 Williams lap today in their pre-show at least, hopefully they will be able to show all the laps he did (at least I presume he will have wanted to do several laps!) Really looking forward to seeing and hearing that car again!

Yeah, he said later how it was tricky at first because the pedals are the opposite way round or something like that but then really went for it. I like to think the car enjoyed it.

Pretty torn about this one. Would love Sainz to take it home today, but for the sake of the championship Leclerc needs to win. Oh well, as long ff as we manage to turn around the bad sentiment caused by the the last few races and win.

Probably

The gap is always that long between the final support race and GP start, for some mysterious reason

Hopefully not though or the cowards will throw in stupid delayed SC start

If it starts raining 5 minutes into the race, then it's perfect

F1 driver parade typically starts two hours before the race and everything else is planned to be over at that point.

It's cool when drivers' parade is done in old cars but the counterpoint is that interviews are much more limited than if they were on the truck.

The driver parade could easily happen like 1 hour before the race if they wanted

I'm also thinking of Australian GP next year when the support race bill is oversubscribed with the arrival of F2 + F3 and V8 Supercars staying in. They could fit Carrera Cup and S5000 in there as well if there wasn't a 2-2,5 hour gap between final support race and GP. But now I think at least one of them will be axed

Can’t wait to see what he thought of an actively sprung car. Doubt he’s driven a single seater with active suspension before.

Rather than anything special about the fuel, couldn't that just mean it is regular fuel but the producers have planted enough trees/bought enough carbon credits to offset the carbon produced during production and use?

I normally can't be bothered with Sky's buildup. 90 minutes is far too long and they fill it will fluff. But I'm going to have it on in the background today in case they show the Vettel FW14B laps.
