A Melbourne friend of mine has just told me that there's a new track near the Victoria/NSW border, with loads of corners,

Can't remember the name though.

Well, it's not Altona...

The bitumen was laid directly on the dried-up edge of the lake for at least a part of the lap, the Charge Brothers had come up with the idea and saw it through.

Of course, when a wetter season came along and those bits flooded it was simply doomed.

Doggie... you'll have to come up with a name, mate.

Wodonga I believe, actually out on the highway to Melbourne.

Maybe that one - he does Porsche track days.

He just told me he was talking about Sailem Bend, south east of Adelaide. Seems to have been there 6 or seven years.

That would be Tailem Bend in South Australia...

It's on the site of the old Chrysler/Mitsubishi test grounds, upgraded into decent circuit material three or four years ago but in use for a variety of things - including Formula Student - for a long time.

Hume Weir was at Wodonga (or Albury) but closed in 1985.

There is a circuit called the Wodonga TAFE Driver Training centre at Barnawartha North.

A bit interesting...

It looks to be almost 2kms long.

From memory, Brad Jones was involved with the TAFE in setting up the motorsports courses.

I used to live not far from Altona lake and used to walk around it quite a bit. Nothing that could be seen that looked remotely like track although you could see how easily it would have flooded when the creek overflowed it is very flat and everything surounding it is just a little bit higher up.

I don't remember when I went looking for it, probably in the mid-seventies...

I did find little stretches of bitumen, but it was (as you say) featureless and it was bleak.
