WHEN: This Weekend, Races on Saturday & Sunday afternoon!
WHERE: ExCeL Exhibition Center, London
WHY: FE Races in London are always special. Track is mental, Championship battle at its climax. What's not to like?

SEASON 8 of Formula E is reaching its CLIMAX!

Just two Double Headers to go, 6 drivers in realistic Title Contention, the 2nd World Championship in FE history will be decided by mid August!

Penultimate step in the stairway to the WDC title is LONDON.

An Historic place for Formula E, the London e-Prix always provided drama & excitement since Season 1: first under the trees of Batteresea Park, than, from Season 7 onwards, in the ExCEL Exhibition Center.
The London E-Prix always proved to be a different kind of challenge for the drivers, and often decided the fate of the championships due to the tight and unforgiving nature of its tracks

Will it be the same this season?

Let's find out

WELCOME TO LONDON!

Formula-E-cars-race-alongside-a-DLR-trai

NEW YORK DRAMA

New York went out with a bang..quite literally!

Unlikely to stay in the calendar for next Season, two weeks ago the Brooklyn "Red Hook" circuit provided some crazy, exciting racing and a monumental crash.
A Double Header that saw the rain coming in as a big factor in Race 1, with the race leaders aquaplaning and piling up into the wall in dramatic fashion.

Race 1 was Red Flagged & not resumed, and the standings were reverted to a lap earlier the race-stopping crash, with Nick Cassidy (Envision) taking his first FE win ever ahead of Lucas Di Grassi (Venturi) & Robin Frijns (Envision)

Race 2 was more of a ordinary FE race, with super tight pack racing & a fascinating energy-management battle: as a result, race winner was uncertain till the last few laps.
Some great scraps between Evans & De Vries, some huge bumps, some contacts & drama, Race 2 was fun.

Da Costa (Techeetah) took his first win of the season ahead of Mercedes Stoffel Vandoorne, now Championship Leader, and Mitch Evans's Jaguar.
With the win, Da Costa kinda came back into the championship fight, crossing the 100 points mark.

But it was a big weekend for Vandoorne, who took the championship lead, taking advantage of Edoardo Mortara's bad weekend.

The fight is OPEN.
6 Drivers can realistically challenge for the title on merit.
Stoffel Vandoorne, Mitch Evans, Edoardo Mortara, Jean Eric Vergne, Antonio Felix Da Costa & Robin Frijns, in the space of 55 points.

London is set to be tense: no mistakes allowed!

LONDON 2022 TRACK

The ExCeL Exhibition Center Circuit is a unique FE track, with Indoor & Outdoor sections.
A crazy circuit, we never saw something like this in Motorsport: multiple track surface changes, tight sections, ramps, big bumps, this track can catch people out at every corner.

Last season the event received a mixed overall reaction from the fans: Race 1 was quite clean & spectacular, with good moves & a good fight for the lead, while Race 2 turned into a Mess as the drivers went bonkers in the ultra-tight Double Hairpin section.

Multiple crashes, track blockages, it was not a great look!

Start-of-the-2021-Formula-E-London-E-Pri

For this reason, the track had some BIG MODIFICATIONS ahead of this weekend's Double Header.

Turn 1 is set to be a little bit wider & more open, allowing for more side by side action, but the biggest tweak is the complete removal of the infamous ouble Hairpin section.
Instead we'll see a "BUS STOP" section, with a fast double chicane that's going to be quite a spectacular challenge: who's going to attack the kerbs and get the best speed out into the following, fast section?

16x9-01.jpg

ENERGY SLASH

London is a very tight track, with limited needs of energy saving through the lap.
In order to mantain a substantial element of energy saving & challenge the teams for efficency through the race, FIA decided to lower the energy limit to 46 Kw/h.  (opposed to the usual 52)

Right choice?

We'll see!   :smoking:  :smoking:

LONDON TIMETABLE

London's Double Header will start effectively on Friday Afternoon with the First Free Practice Session at 17.10.

Saturday's action will kick off with FP2 at 9.00, followed by Quali at 10.30

RACE 1 will start at 15.00 on SATURDAY!
RACE 2 same time on SUNDAY!

Friday 29 July

  • Free Practice 1:  17:10

Saturday 30 July

  • Free Practice 2:  08:55
  • Qualify 1:  10:30
  • Race 1:  15:00

Sunday 31 July

  • Free Practice 3: 08:30
  • Qualfy 2: 10:30
  • Race 2: 15:00

Hooray, weirdest track of the year

Extra points for not one but two images of the DLR. If you approach from south of the river you can also get to the ExCel via the improbable and mostly unused Emirates Air Line.

Was it last year when one of the teams (Audi?) tried to take a shortcut by going through the pitlane?

I thought I’d have a butcher’s at the ticket prices seeing as I’m free this weekend and it’s easy to get to me via the Tube but seeing a Saturday ticket cost £99 for a race that will be over in under 90 minutes is something I can’t really justify.

It was indeed. If remember correctly was also technically legal, save for Di Grassi failing to come to a complete stop in the pit-box. If not for that procedural mis-step, I think FE would have been left with no choice but to award them the win.

They closed the loophole after the race, I think.

There were cheaper tickets available earlier on, wouldn't surprise me if it's the £99 brackets which are the ones left over this close to the event.

Think those are the premium/vips seats tbh

Ticket went for sale months ago, so i guess the cheaper one are sold out in Race Week.

It was £15 for eVillage tickets (I'm not entirely sure how much racetrack you're permitted to see with them, but I'm sure more light can be shed on that during the weekend) and then grandstand seats grading went £49, £69, £99.

I'm going with some mates on Sunday (providing I start testing negative for COVID - it's been 8 days, so I'd hope so!). Not a massive fan of the track but will be interesting seeing it in person. Will let you know how the organisation and experience is!

My only gripe so far - why is practice so early?! The Sunday practice session is at 08:30. I can't get a train early enough to get to the track for 08:30!

What are you looking forward the most in London?

o  The chequered flag for Race 2, then the whole sorry business will be over.

FE seem to have moved towards having FP1 on a Friday which you would think would mean they wouldn't have to start proceedings quite so early the following day.. approve of the change anyway, 4 sessions in one day seemed a bit much.

Reports seem to suggest the 'bus stop' chicane is going to be quite fast, even though it doesn't look it on the track map. Interested to see how that turns out.. gotta be a step forward over the double hairpins.

I think they only have FP1 on the friday when it is a double header event.

Edit - or maybe they have to leave time for the RoboRace cars to perform....

Yeah, the new "Bus Stop" chicane should be quite flowing by the looks of things.

You can see it at around 1.50 mark in the video

Well, we'll see the real deal later today at 17.10 for FP1.   :smoking:

Another London e-Prix Fact: Direct Clash with F1's qualifying on Saturday & half clash with F1 race on Sunday (the e-Prix starts one hour after the start of the Hungarian GP)
You will have to choose.

Be sure to choose wisely  :smoking:

Another fact: 60% rain chance on Sunday.

Blimey!   :smoking:

Dragon Penske cars on the Attack!

Sette Camara P1 & Giovinazzi P4 in Practice!

On such a tight track, with low energy management needed, it could be the right e-Prix for a Double Point finish for the Dragon team.

Also, both guys could be looking at seats for Gen 3 atm, so a good showing is needed.

Top 5

Sette Camara: 1'14''487

Evans: 1'14''659

Cassidy: 1'14''694

Giovinazzi: 1'14''758

De Vries: 1'14''834

Track has much more flow & rythm with the removal of the Double Hairpin, big

You can't enjoy either of the races you're following, so i'd rather watch one live and the other one recorded.

UK at the top!

Unpopular opinion:
Must say i love to see Gen 2's on this track: so many fast direction changes, great camera work, up & Downs, bumps, kerbs attacking.
Cars looks fast & lively.

Quali should be one to watch!
