Biggest gap between world championship rounds?

1954 was bigger, opened on 17th Jan, next round was Indy on 31st May, which can almost be ignored for its lack of common factors, and the next after that was 20th June.

Yeh , was an awful time and the beginning of the end for what was once one of the best Composite companies to work for. Some weeks you didnt know if you were going to be paid or not  Happily , somebody is bringing the name back to life so maybe it can get back to where it should be.

Im sorry to hear that. Sad that it still leaves a mark in a negative way in your life. Hopefully it is not all negative, as I assume there must have been great times as well around the team.

True it's not all negative . If it was'nt for working there and constantly looking for other jobs , I would'nt have rocked up at Red Bull. There are a few lads here who were at LOLA at the same time as me and we do sometimes discuss it with the lads that have known nothing other than working in F1 with a unlimited budget [ well until recently ] They cant believe that we had to buy our own tools as they have all that bought for them.

Was it 1998 or 1999 or 2000 we had a five week gap to the very last race?

1998 did… was a strange one. The whole october with no racing and then a return for the last race at Suzuka.

Anyone who hasn’t already, should absolutely listen to the ‘BringBackV10s’ podcast from The Race. Some awesome episodes and insight into 90’s and 00’s F1

https://podcasts.app...es/id1502628252

The MasterCard Lola episode is great

I already listen to a 90's football podcast, adding an F1 version sounds pretty sweet.

The more I think about it the more I think the 90's was the high point of civilisation....

I’ve got about 15 podcasts I need to catch up on since I lost my daily commute to the summer holidays, Motorsport and other. I’ve got a just-turned three year old and we’re doing so far unsuccessful potty training that means I smell of p*ss all the time. I’ve got (hopefully) a bit of sunshine and another three weeks before I go back to work, plus the start of the football season which means I’ve got the FourFourTwo season preview to read every time I go to the toilet. I’ve just about got enough to keep me going, I think.

This fails to give enough credit to McLaren, who perhaps are not remotely done sowing discord through the paddock, though one hopes the next two or three drivers it approaches have at least read the latest twitter feeds.

Vuelta starts soon

The closest it comes to us this year is the Elche - Alicante time trial, so thats mostly flat and a short leg. I don't think I'll bother going the 30k to watch.

Neither where the 1700's!

on F1TV got Chromecast to stream Main Feed to telly, desktop for driver onboards, and tablet for telemetry set up.. it works for past races, hope it'll work for live transmissions, also. (bit of a hassle to sync everything..)

Have a few old monitors laying around for additional (HDMI) connections.. but don't want to go overboard, it's just football with 1000HP wingers and fewer own goals.. (Unless Ferrari..)

Somewhere in the middle of this ITV broadcast is a fantastic Ginetta Junior race at Knockhill. Oh, and there's a British Touring Car Race as well and a Mini race. Who needs a Grand Prix?

It's a shame they didn't release the F1 manager game at the start of Aug and not the end, we could have had 4 weeks building up our F1 team management skills and knowledge really adding much more depth to all our comments on various topics on here!!

Chess Olympiad ... 16 year old Indian prodigy Gukesh is on 7 wins from 7 games playing board 1 for India 2... it would be a fairy tale if India 2 manages to win the whole thing as they are playing at home. India 2 is a kind of junior team featuring probably the best crop of young players that India has ever produced - normally they would not be getting the chance to represent their country at an Olympiad so early in their careers but India is hosting so they have the right to field multiple teams - every other country is limited to one team each of 5 players.

Russia is banned from the 2022 Olympiad and China refuses to participate for unspecified reasons (could it be the unofficial alliance with Russia applies even to chess? ... Hmmm) .... The 2022 Olympiad should have been held in Russia but was moved for obvious reasons - and its being held in India for the first time - they filled in as hosts at short notice but are putting on a wonderful event.

.... With big guns Russia and China not participating, the other superpower the Americans were odds on favourites before the start as this year they have an expensively assembled team of mostly mercenaries ... err ... recent immigrants ... 4 of their 5 were top players in their previous countries but they have decided to play for the USA (probably for the money ... but no one wants to say for sure) ...  fittingly, and in line with current geopolitical, events the American super team is failing hard (to most of the [chess] world's quiet satisfaction) - but dont count them out yet, 4 rounds still to go... the empire might still strike back.

Well .... the empire will not be striking back! ... and the fairytale result is still very much possible .... in round 8 (of 11, played in a league format) the Indian kids team defeated the "American" team (even though on paper this is one of the strongest teams ever assembled - featuring 4 world top 10 players "bought off" from various other countries) ... and the 16 year old wunderkind, Gukesh, has now won 8 out of 8 games played so far - something no one has ever done before in a major tournament (at least not anytime that I can remember).

I know this is not motorsport - so sorry for going on about this - ..... but its a big frickin' deal.

Back in the 50's, the season usually ended at Monza in September. But from 1959, a US Grand Prix (F1, not Indy)  was introduced, tacked on at the end of the year. That year, the points position after Monza was very close. Brabham, Moss and Brooks were all in contention. They had a bit of a wait. The Italian Grand Prix was held on September 13 and the US race at Sebring took place on December 12, a gap of something like 90 days. It had only been around 125 days from the first race of the season (Monaco) to Monza.

By the way, if anyone's casting around for something to occupy their time during the summer break, a look back at the 1959 United States Grand Prix is something you might find rewarding. Amongst other things, a private entrant, one Harry Schell, “accidentally on purpose” noticed a slip road round the back of the track which had the effect of cutting off a large chunk of the lap. During one practice lap he quietly dodged down it without the officials noticing and was credited with a spectacular time - way faster than either car or driver could have achieved by doing the full lap - which got him on the front row of the grid! This meant that he displaced Tony Brooks in the works Ferrari who was consequently obliged to start from row two." And that was only of of several little oddities in this particular race.

More than once, I have chuckled at the recollection of Harry's wheeze when I see current drivers having their practice times deleted due to exceeding the defined track limits.

Things are certainly different today!

So going along the M27 yesterday there were warnings for debris & then the SC appeared out of the slip road in front of me. It swerved across the lanes (thought I was supposed to be the one to warm up tyres!) with a big sign  “Do Not Pass” in rear window. So as the lead driver I dutifully stayed behind & moaned about how slow he was going! Remembering that you must stay within 10 car lengths I kept at about 5. Then the sign “Stay Back” appeared in rear window. Suitably chastised I backed the pack up!

Made a good restart though - left them all standing!!!!!

Missing F1!!  :D

Perhaps I'm lucky, but reading about racing floats my boat. Prompted by the French GP thread, which cpbell started with info about the 1922 race, I've been re-reading race reports for nineteen-twenties Grands Prix. Did you know the 1926 GP d'Europe had a safety car start, and what's more... no, come back!

I grew up during the quite stable period of 16 races per year and I still think that 16 is the optimal number. Maybe 1 or 2 more, but that's it.
