I would give this season 8/10 up to this point, most of the races have been enjoyable to watch and the new regulations have succeeded in permitting closer racing between cars at most circuits. The main thing preventing me from giving this year a higher rating is the lack of excitement in the world championships - it seems increasingly likely that Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing will win the respective titles and will probably do so before the final race. Before the British GP, I felt that Ferrari and Leclerc needed to win at least two of the four races before the summer break to keep the championship alive. Ferrari succeeded in this regard but Leclerc fell short, more importantly though the last two races have seen Leclerc score just 8 points to Verstappen's 50, leaving him even further behind in the standings. It's not completely over yet, but I predict it will be practically over after the next triple header.
From a competitive point of view, Red Bull may have won over half the GPs this season, but they have been challenged in most of those races and Ferrari's growing list of operational errors should not disguise their car's genuine race winning speed - this year has been nowhere near the Mercedes domination of 2014-16 and 2020. I think the resurgence of Mercedes in recent races has been welcome as it has made competition near the front more intense, making me wonder whether I was too hasty when I predicted that they would not win a race this year, although I stand by my prediction that it will be Lewis Hamilton who does win if the opportunity arises. Another positive is that no teams have been cut adrift at the back of the field, Williams may be some way adrift at the bottom of the constructors standings but they have scored points and in Albon's hands have shown reasonably respectable pace, with the other teams all looking competitive enough to score points on merit at several races. On the minus side, the top three teams are well clear of the rest of the field and the likelihood of surprise podium visits or winners from midfield teams has receded after victories for Gasly/Alpha Tauri and Ocon/Alpine in the last two years.
In my opinion the best race of the season so far is the British GP (I don't think I got around to voting in the rate in the race thread but I would have given it 10/10, as it was a thrilling and unpredictable race with numerous overtakes for top positions and several realistic potential winners) with the Azerbaijan GP being the least memorable (I gave it 4/10, once the Ferraris retired there wasn't a lot of interest near the front of the field and it fell well short of the excitement seen in Baku previously)
