Asked about plans for the car to race, Dicker added: "We’ve got a couple of interesting projects that we’re working on, but I can’t talk about them at the moment."



This sounds really interesting to me, but I have hard time believing this can be entered for any open competition, other than WWE performance balancing racing ä. Which would mean much slower than F1 and neutered by restrictive regulations anyways. The other options are track day car (boring) or spec series car (not as boring but not ideal, unless it's somehow even seriously faster than F1). The final option is something weird like Pikes Peak but no-one watches that and you don't (intend to) build 27 cars for such.

Practically every super car builder can create something faster than F1 if they ignore the regulations, and real world use.

Yes and that's why to me the Porsche 919 EVO "tour" was completely meaningless PR scheme.

But if they created, say even a spec series out of this that was faster than F1, then it would be something as there would technically have to be regulations of some sort.

A spec series is the exact opposite of having no technical regulations. It’s having no technical freedom at all.

All of these little projects are meaningless PR. Any real racing series would need to have some sort of technical regulation. It’s not an amazing thing to build a car that can lap faster than an F1 car. F1 speeds are purposefully limited by the regulations to maintain safety, maintain the possibility of racing on existing tracks and keeping costs in check. You’re never going to have another CanAm.

I'd rather forego some free PR if it's at the expense of legal fees to lawyers.

You'd balance the value of lots of headlines about your amazing new car being in dispute with Nintendo(basically getting a leg up from the bigger brand complaining) against the minor legal fees of saying "ugh, fine, we'll rename it" after a news cycle or three.

Not really.  You can't trademark a name to cover every possible use of that name.  You have to pick the categories where you are going to use it.  Hence Apple Computers and Apple Music, and the brouhaha whenever those two worlds merge. 

 

Nintendo has trademarked F Zero for computer games and toys.  It has not done so for cars or racing formulae.  There is a get-out where a brand is so well-known (say Coca-Cola) that someone making e.g. the Coca-Cola Hand Loom is going to look as if they are cashing in on a reputation, but F-Zero is not going to be in that category.
