A few interesting names at the test. A lot of names who also don't deserve a seat in F3, but time will tell!

If O'Sullivan is in at Prema, then you'd have to think he'd be a strong favourite with a years' experience under his belt.

Charouz didn't exactly run very talented drivers. Marinangelli, Garcia, Deumedian... please keep those rich kids with no talent out of F3. Villagomez, Yeany, Benavides.... F3 deserves better drivers. That's what you get when F3 is so insanely expensive (between 750.000 & 1.2 million $ per year). I guess FIA wants it to be a sport for multi millionaire (or even billioniaire) sons... very very sad. Yeany may have won a US F4 title but that level is far lower as in Europe.

The big talents: Gabriele Mini, Nikola Tsolov (would let him do F. Regional first instead of rushing him because he's going to get stuck / blocked in Alpine's Academy too soon otherwise by the likes of Doohan & Martins or even David and that would be a shame), Dino Beganovic, Paul Aron,Taylor Barnard, Nikita Bedrin, Hadrien David

The talents:  Leonardo Fornaroli, Sebastian Montoya, Hugh Barter, Francesco Colapinto, Francesco Pizzi, Jonny Edgar (if he recovers fully from his illness could come good), Zak O' Sullivan, Gabriel Bortoleto

Reasonable talents:  Mari Boya, Pepe Marti, Joel Granfors, Lorenzo Fluxa

Average ro reasonable: Gregoire Saucy (hardly did karting though so better as people judge him), Oliver Goethe, Kaylen Frederick, , etc....

Mediocre to bad: Rafael Villagomez, Hunter Yeany, Max Esterson (still little experience though, came from F. Ford, decent season in GB3), Reece Ushijima, Emmo Fittipaldi Jr., Roberto Faria (couldn't challenge for GB3 title in 3rd season but at least showed decent speed), Alessandro Famularo (dissapointing at Prema in F4), Christian Mansell,  Noel Leon (poor debut season in F. Regional but jumping from Mexico to Europe is hard), Brad Benavides (decent shifter karter, hasn't shown anything yet in cars)....

Plain bad: Nicola Marinangelli, Alex Garcia, Arias Deukmedian

I think Franco Colapinto and Zak O' Sullivan have enough talent to be in big talents group, what Zak can achive in Carlin is better than everyone in last years at F3 for they. And Dino and Aron not so good in formulas , both not show something real special in first years in F4 (like Antonelli or Mini i mean) both not show similar to Hadjar or Maloney level in first season at FRegional.

Colapinto I think so too. O'Sullivan maybe, he's done well this year. But none of them are in the same talent league as Gabriele Mini. Jonny Edgar's development was slowed by his illness so it's fair to judge him later, he had some good drivers at the end of the year.

Antonelli is headed FRECA.

There is rumour of a minimum age limit for FIA F3 of 17 Y/O going rounds according to Alex Dunne discord.

That's a real shame, and strikes me as a waste of a year for Antonelli. I don't understand why the FIA is feeling the need to introduce these minimum age limits.

There was some sort of denial of that from F3 organizers. Some other rumor was that Mercedes wants Aron in F3.

Well, there is some pretty funky stuff going on in the GT/Sportscar world that got me thinking.

Iron Lynx/Iron Dames are pretty much the same people as Prema (DC Racing Solutions Prema ties up with Iron Lynx team under new owner - Formula Scout , DC Racing Solutions SA à Zug - Renseignements | Moneyhouse ). Iron Lynx/Prema will reportedly be the official Lamborghini team when Sant'Agata Bolognese enters the FIA WEC.

With Lambo being legally a subsiduary of Audi... Could we see a Prema/Audi tie up at some point? As an official driver development partner for a potential Audi Junior Team? One that will need to have some room available pretty damn soon?

It will serve all the young racers well if F3 and F2 install an age limit.

They should raise the age limit of F4 (that's now 15) to 16, that automatically means they would arrive 1 year older at F3 & F2. Currently age limit is 15 for F4, 16 for F. Regional or FIA F3, 17 for F2, 18 for F1.

Now the reason that they are rushing drivers often so quickly is actually that the cost of feeder series is very high so the best would be off course to lower the cost per season of single seaters (and to make karting cheaper as well: that's also very difficult because to succeed at top level karting your kid actually needs to move to Italy so that already represents a significant cost).

Maybe require license points as well for major series like F3 and F2 would solve the problem.

There are periods from time to time, when the F3 and F2 fields have to be sort of "filled up", and by that I mean that the back of the grid usually consists of drivers who shouldn't really be there, but they have some money to burn.  And I think that's the problem. Licence points alone won't pay for the seats.

It's an interesting thought.  If F3 and F2 were only open to drivers meeting certain qualification criteria, maybe the teams would have to drop their prices for a seat if there weren't enough driver candidates to go around?

Not that this seems to work in F1!

Currently age limit is 15 for F4

Is it not even more idiotic? 14 is the limit in some countries, but FIA have decided that if you do F4 at 14, you will not be allowed to score SL points for 2 seasons... :drunk:

the FIA has btw denied the rumour about the age limit, which is odd, I am on that discord server where Dunne said this. He would probably know.

as for age limits, frankly they are fine. In the states they allow 13-14 year olds in F4 equivalent cars even

Off course there is an age limit, back when Crawford started in Euroformula Open he had to miss the first race because he was just 15 and not 16. And it is 15 for F4, at 14 they are not allowed to race and if they do so FIA does not grant Super Licence points and the championship that let's a 14 year old drive is punished by FIA by receiving 3 years in a row no Super Licence points (that is the case for Danish & Mexican F4!).

I found this in the ISC appendix L:

Drivers competing in all National FIA Formula 4 Championships certified by the FIA must be at least 15 years old (the date of the birthday being binding). Any driver who competes in any FIA Formula 4 Championship certified by the FIA competition under the age of 15 years old will be ineligible to score Super Licence points in the current and following 2 years of competition.

Aha I missed this post so FIA is considering raising age for FIA F3 to 17, that makes sense.

That would make:

F4: 15

F. Regional & Euroformula Open: 16

FIA F3:  17  (currently 16)

FIA F2: still 17 ?  (currently 17)

FIA F1: still 18?  (currently 18)

But if they raise FIA F3 to 17 that means F2 will automatically become 18 and F1 19 in reality since most drivers pass via F2 to F1 these days

Danish F4 not certified by FIA as i think. On official FIA site's F4 page they not mention.

FIA F3 SILLY SEASON 2023 OVERVIEW

PREMA  (Ita)

1.   Paul  ARON  (Est)                                CONFIRMED   (Mercedes Jr.)

2.   Dino  BEGANOVIC  (Swe / Bos)         CONFIRMED   (Ferrari Jr.)

3.   Zak  O'SULLIVAN  (GB)                        EXPECTED     (Williams Jr.)

TRIDENT  (Ita)

4.   Gabriel  BORTOLETTO  (Bra)             CONFIRMED  (managed by Alonso)

5.   Oliver  GOETHE  (DK)                           EXPECTED

6.   Leonardo  FORNAROLI  (Ita)                EXPECTED

ART GP  (Fra)

7.   Grégoire  SAUCY  (CH)                        CONFIRMED

8.   Kaylen  FREDERICK  (USA)                  EXPECTED

9.   Nikola  TSOLOV  (Bul)                           EXPECTED  (Alpine Jr., managed by Alonso)

* Alonso wants to push Tsolov straight from F4 to F3 (skipping F. Regional) so he would be one step ahead of his old karting rivals Andrea Kimi Antonelli & Rafael Camara, he also avoids having to compete with his old rivals again (that seems to me as a more plausible motivation).

But there are since recently rumours that the FIA might decide to raise the age for FIA F3 from 16 to 17 years old (F. Regional is 16 years) so young drivers who do well in F4 in their rookie year would be forced to do a year in F. Regional. If they do this that means that Tsolov, who turns 16 this winter, will have to do F. Regional first. It's another prime example of the FIA protecting the capital of the feeder series teams. But let's wait if it's just a rumour or not.

* Brad BENAVIDES  (Esp) and GB3 driver & Sauber Jr. Roberto FARIA  (Bra) also tested for ART but are not in the running for a seat, unless off course Tsolov will have to wait for F3

MP MOTORSPORT  (Ned)

10.  Mari  BOYA  (Esp)                                 CONFIRMED

11.  Franco  COLAPINTO  (Arg)                    EXPECTED

12.  Jonny  EDGAR  (GB)                              EXPECTED     (Red Bull Jr. in 2022 but likely to be dropped for 2023)

HITECH  (GB)

14.  Gabriele  MINI  (Ita)                                 CONFIRMED   (managed by Nicholas Todt)

15.  Reece  USHIJIMA  (US / Jap)                   EXPECTED

16.  Sebastian  MONTOYA  (Col)                     EXPECTED     (rumoured that he might join the Red Bull Academy)

VAN AMERSFOORT  (Ned)

17.  Rafael  VILLAGOMEZ  (Mex)                    EXPECTED     (this is a certainty since the team manager of Van Amersfoort's F3 team used to manage him)

18.  Roberto  FARIA  (Bra)                               RUMOURED    (Faria tested for ART & Van Amersfoort, likely to end up here)

19.  Max  ESTERSON  (USA)                          RUMOURED    (tested for them but still looking at other options, like Montoya he is a Red Bull Athlete)

19.  Noel  LEON  (Mex)                                    RUMOURED    (tested for them, Red Bull Jr. in 2022 but likely to be dropped, likely he stays in F. Regional)

*  Kas HAVERKORT  (Ned) lacks the budget to step up to FIA F3 and will do another season of F. Regional with Van Amersfoort.

 CARLIN  (GB)

20.  Hunter  YEANY  (USA)                              EXPECTED      (Yeany has negotiated with Trident & Charouz as well but Carlin is the most likely destination)

21.  Oliver  GRAY  (GB)                                    EXPECTED     (Certain. Since Carlin ran Williams Jr. O'Sullivan last year, Gray will take that seat). (Williams Jr.)

22.  Joel  GRANFORS  (Swe)                          RUMOURED    (tested for them and seems the most likely candidate for the 3rd seat)

*  Carlin absolutely wanted the very talented Frenchman Hadrien DAVID  (Fra) in their car. They wanted him so badly that they offered a seat to him for a price cheaper as an F4 seat, they are said to have offered the seat for an amount between 75.000 euro & 100.000 euro which is 10% of what a F3 seat normally costs (between 750.000 and 1 million euro).

DAVID is an Alpine Junior however the Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi has recently said that he doesn't want to spend any more money on F3 seats after McLaren stole their junior Oscar Piastri (Alpine's words, not mine) and they invested in him for nothing, and that their junior (David) has to find the money himself. David doesn't have the money neither does he have rich parents that can pay that amount, even if it's almost a free seat. Ironic is that Alpine spent much more money on their lawsuit for Piastri than the tiny amount Carlin is asking.
David has already said he is now looking at a carreer in sportscars because he really can't afford F3. He can't even afford F4 (that seat was funded by the French federation for him). Sad, very very sad. Alpine should be deeply ashamed.

Another Alpine Junior, Caio COLLET  (Bra) should have moved up to F2 next year, however Laurent Rossi also cut his budget and doesn't want to fund that either (because of Piastri). Collet has said he is also looking at Sportscars because he can't afford F2.... very sad how Alpine treats it's Juniors

* Another driver who tested for Carlin is Armenian-American Arias  DEUKMEDIAN  (USA) however Carlin would prefer Granfors (better driver) over him. Deukmedian is just a rich kid with no talent. He was nowhere in F4, why does he want to go straight to F3 then? He should stay in F4 and learn there. Spoiled rich kids getting seats over talents like David... sad.

CAMPOS  (Esp)

23.  Pepe  MARTI  (Esp)                         EXPECTED

24.  Christian  MANSELL  (Aus)              EXPECTED

25.  Hugh  BARTER  (Aus / Jap)             EXPECTED

*  Francesco  PIZZI  (Ita) also tested for Campos during the post season F3 test but is expected to go to the United States to USF Pro 2000 (used to be called Indy Pro 2000)

JENZER  (Ch)

26.  Taylor  BARNARD  (GB)                   EXPECTED

27.  Nikita  BEDRIN  (Ita / Rus)               EXPECTED

28.  William  ALATALO  (Fin)                   RUMOURED   (he is looking for the budget to stay in F3, Alatalo currently does military service in Finland)

28.  Alex  GARCIA  (Mex)                        RUMOURED   (tested for Jenzer and was dead slow but has money behind him, if Alatalo can't fund it)

28.  Ido  COHEN  (Isr)                             RUMOURED   (another candidate if Alatalo can't secure the drive. Cohen even has the budget for F2)

CHAROUZ  (Cze)  /  G4 RACING  (Ch)

29.  Alessandro  FAMULARO  (Ven)        RUMOURED

30.  Nicola  MARINANGELI  (Ita)             RUMOURED

31.  Matias  ZAGAZETA  (Peru)               RUMOURED   (more likely to do one more year of F. Regional I think)

31.  Emmo  FITTIPALDI Jr.  (Bra)            RUMOURED

*  Very big chance G4 Racing is going to buy Charouz or at least the entry of Charouz in F3.

Yeah unfortunately it can make a huge difference for your carreer at which team you end up in F3. If Mini ended up at Prema he would for sure be the title favourite but at Hitech he for sure will have a hard time fighting for top honours. That's sad in a way because he is the most talented driver of all drivers currently in F. Regional / F3. You also don't want to end up at teams like Carlin, Jenzer or Campos in F3. Best team is Prema followed by Trident and ART.

Beganovich IMHO.

Don't forget Paul Aron. Both Aron & Beganovic are more talented as O'Sullivan but Zak has a year of F3 experience over his team mates, that will probably even things out so all three may even be in the title battle.

Bortoleto & Fornaroli at Trident will be drivers to watch too. Trident has been very close to Prema the past couple of years, they're currently the 2nd best F3 team.

Mini might still be in the title fight despite beiing at a lesser F3 team because he is so good but realistically it will be tough for him to compete with Prema.

Idk about saying they're "more talented" just like that, Zak was a bit of a revelation this year. Sometimes drivers start to show something extra and start coming good at this level.. See Piastri

Agreed that Zak showed some very nice things at Carlin last year, and he did win the Autosport Young Driver award & GB3 (not the same level as F. Regional though) title. You're certainly right he was a revelation this year. It's a strong line-up for Prema, they usually pick one experienced driver and pair him with two talented rookies, it always worked out well for them.

Australian Christian Mansell has in the meantime been confirmes (as expected) by Campos. Promissing American Max Esterson will not move to F3 (yet), he will do a second season in GB3 at Fortec (2022 was Esterson's first season with slick & wing cars after having lots of succes in F. Ford, even winning the F. Ford Festival in '22 and the Walter Hayes Trophy in '21).

Ollie Goethe has signed for Trident.

He showed good pace in his two events this year, good to see him getting full-time seat.

Ooooh, Tsolov looks like he's going to be confirmed at ART for next year. He only turns 16 this coming Wednesday but makes the step up from dominating Spanish F4.

Personally, I think it's a shame Antonelli isn't on the same grid next year. Feels like it could be too early though and Antonelli's team have gotten it right by keeping him back a year, or Tsolov's team have made the right call and Antonelli could end up taking a bit of a sideways step into FRECA.
