My local cam grinders - Kelford cams in Christchurch NZ - bought one of Comp cams older CNC machines. I got to have a chat with the guy who came out to show them how it worked. Interesting to find out just how specialised their work is. He'd basically only ever done cams for American V8's. He was more than a little surprised at the range of cams a company here in NZ was expected to be able to provide.

Kelford very quickly found an income from that machine.  They did Cosworth US cams for "import" engines for several years.

One of the few dull days in my apprenticeship was running the cam grinder for LandRover at Acocks Green. That was definitely an old school factory, beer in the canteen and porn films projected on the wall. And everywhere posters of men with testicular cancer caused by stuffing oily rags in their overall pockets. I did have the best assignment there though, a couple of weeks rebuilding engines that had failed on the dyno. By hand. No powertools. I don't think I was even allowed to use a ratchet, speedbrace was the high tech.

If you would like to fall down a very entertaining rabbit hole, cam lobe design. There are a number of ancient books on the subject, and lots of contemporary material as well.
