You have to think it as if Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull had been disqualified for some reason...always after the last race...each year.

Why aren’t Mercedes included in this? They were basically midfield when the season started. Haas and Alfa were racing them hard in the first 2-3 GPs.

Good point. They should be listed in the 2021 midfield rankings also. Alpine and Mclaren even had more wins than Ferrari last year.

 

Its somewhat ambiguous to me now since I noticed that OP did say

But the thread title seems to suggest something a bit different. It must be comforting/extremely valuable for Ferrari/Merc/RB to know that no matter how far they've fallen, they will never be perceived as  "the-rest".

It is just to make it consistent between seasons. I calculated these rankings in 2017-19 and then didn't bother with 2020 or 2021 at the time because there wasn't an obvious midfield, but then went back and did them when it returned to Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull in 2022, just to keep it consistent.
