Amazing aren’t they!
Dutch GP 1955 and unbelievable in-build shots of Jack’s T40 Bristol coming together. I wonder if Fred lent a hand ?

Wonderful shots of the Zandvoort paddock and rear of the pit boxes. Caltex flags and brick pathway confirm it. Hawthorn and Trintignant's Super Squalo's. Thank you for posting!

My goodness! I was actually at the 1955 Dutch race. It was held the week after the Le Mans disaster and I still remember being surprised to see Mercedes there. Not to mention that they still held the race. Wonderful photos.

Don, I have to say...

Your recollections of that period really do need more recounting on this forum. I recall you've made mentions of Le Mans previously, but not much else.

Fred toils on Dick Cobden's Ferrari 125 at Gnoo Blas during the 1955 South Pacific Championship weekend

Thanks for starting this thread Peter Houston.

Peter Reynell first started posting Fred Pearse Collection photos (maybe a name change to this Mr Wirra??) onto Bob Williamson's perennially wonderful Facebook page way back in 2018.

I bundled up a bunch of them and wrote a primotipo article at the time - including the responses to the photos from the wise-owls (Medley, Willis, King and others). I'd not published it tho, I did so yesterday when reminded of its existence when Reynell uploaded the batch Peter Houston has now popped up in our manor.

See here; Fred Pearse Collection 2… | primotipo...

A while back I wrote a piece on the 1955 South Pacific Championship which was inspired by Fred's shots too; 1955 South Pacific Championship, Gnoo Blas… | primotipo...

It would be great if you could look at Fred Pearse Collection 2 as we've not yet nailed who all the shots are/where.

Wonderful material that it all is.

Mark

Thanks Peter,

The #126 Peter Walker driven, Rob Walker owned Connaught B-Type Alta, #122 Brabham, Cooper T40 Bristol, and I suspect, the #105 C-Type are all at the August 13 1955 Snetterton Redex Trophy meeting.

Jack was fourth and Walker DNF in the race won by Harry Schell's Vanwall from Wharton's similar car and Moss in the family 250F.

Cobden's #4 Ferrari 125, and Archie Scott-Brown in the #51 Lister Bristol, circuits unknown

Given the Brits are remaining quiet on who, where and when I'm going to stick my neck out and say the 4 Cobden Ferrari and 51 Scott-Brown Lister Bristol photos relate to August 1, 1955 Brands Hatch.

Then the Alfa, ERA and the various paddock scenes with ERA, Nashes, Bentley, etc relate to the August 6, 1955 VSCC Silverstone meeting. The Atlantic Stable transporter is Whitehead's making for a pretty good reason why Fred was there.

If a programme for that Silverstone can be found then numbers/drivers could then be matched/confirmed.

Tony Johns comments found in 'Old Motor Racing Photographs - Australia

"Peter Reynell has shared with us all some wonderful photographs. After checking both David Weguelin's definitive ERA book and Clare Hay's Blower Bentley book I offer the comments. The photos were taken on August 6, 1955 at the VSCC Silverstone meeting. ERA R10B was then owned by Jonty Williamson who was unplaced in the Seaman Trophy race following two pit stops. This is the same ERA that Peter Whitehead won the Australian Grand Prix at Bathurst in 1938. By 1955 it had been updated and later rebuilt to its original specs by Jonty Williamson. In 1978 then owner Joel Finn competed at the 50th AGP Anniversary at Phillip Island. The Blower Bentley is the Tim Birkin single seat Brooklands record holder chassis HB3402 but in the photo fitted with a two seater body by Chalmers not the red body we know today. Original UK registration UU5871 was changed in 1953 to NUL618 but back to the original in 1965. It also had a cut down Speed 6 radiator and in 1955 it was jointly owned by Robertson-Roger and John Morley. More recent owners were Rusty Russ-Turner and George Daniels. Thanks to Phil Schudmak for sharing the owners names from 1955 and more can be found in Dr Clare Hay's book Blower Bentley. Now up to the Alfa Romeo enthusiasts to share more on 900BH. Tony Johns."

Regarding the Archie Scott-Brown and Dick Cobden photos, according to racingsportscars Archie ran with the number 51 at the Daily Telegraph sponsored meeting at Brands Hatch on the 1st August 1955.

In the report on this meeting in the September 1955 issue of Motor Sport, on page 32, Dick Cobden is mentioned in the opening paragraph while Archie Scott-Brown's name appears towards the end of the report.

I think Dick Cobden would have raced in the Rochester Cup as, although the report suggests it was for sports cars, in the pictorial section a few pages later there is a picture of Roy Salvadori competing in the Rochester Cup in his Maserati 250F.

Wonderful photos!

The large white Edwardian tourer among the Bentleys in the Silverstone vintage paddock in #18 looks to me like Lawrence Pomeroy junior's Prince Henry Vauxhall - the car was of course designed by his father. I've found a couple of paternal pics of the proud owner with the car from November 1952, including one with a typical Pom-style en route snack.

With-Prince-Henry-Nov-52-1.jpg

With-Prince-Henry-Nov-52-3.jpg

Incidentally, it was Pom Junior who devised the VSCC's arcane Pomeroy Trophy event, a series of tests and measurements designed to identify the best touring car at the meeting, though the superb Rex Hayes model awarded to the overall winner depicts a Prince Henry wearing altogether more sporting bodywork than this car.

Back to the 1955 meeting and I've also found a pic of one of the handicap races getting under way, featuring some of the cars from the Fred Pearse paddock shots. Small world, innit?

These are splendid period photos thank you for posting them all.

The photo of #105 is  a Cooper-Jaguar. Graham Whitehead ran with this car at the Snetterton event on 14 Aug 1955 as mentioned above.

Just to confirm your thoughts  - this is from the programme 1 August 1955 Brands meeting confirming #4 as Cobden's Ferrari and the #51 Lister. The Rochester Cup was open to any single seater exceeding 500cc and ran as two heats with results on aggregate.

Thank you Gents for helping join the dots on the UK related photos.

Even without a VSCC Silverstone programme, Tony's P.A.T shots help establish the date. And the wonderful Pom shots clearly show he wasn't afraid to pop a cork and then carry on. A sign of the times.

Does anybody think the Alfa 900BH photo is J G Crowther? Access to a Simon Moore tome would help I dare say.

The other shot still messing with me is the paddock scene with Lotus and company.

I am fairly certain that the paddock photo  with Lotus and Company is also the 14 August 1955 Snetterton meeting.

The Lotus Mk IX in the foreground seems to wear #68 which Colin Chapman drove at the above event.  Also there is another Lotus Mk IX  on the left wearing #53 which would be the car of Peter Jopp - a Team Lotus entry and there is the Lotus van behind.

#81 would be Tommy Sopwith's Equipe Endeavour Cooper T38 Jaguar which was entered in the over 1500 race and what looks like #66 on the right would be Roy Salvadori's Cooper T39 Climax also entered by Equipe Endeavour.

Not 100% certain of this as I don't have a programme but the cars, numbers and location all seem to fit.

Thank you 68targa...

The lack of a Snetterton programme and a gap of 19/8/55 Autosport for a report doesn't help at this end. However, Dec 55 Autocourse does at least give Roy's winning Cooper Climax number as car 66 in the results.

progcovers shows the programme date as Sat, 13 August.

I really must improve my filing system for I have just unearthed a programme for that Snetterton meeting.  Date is indeed Saturday 13th August.

Here are the pages from the relevant events for interest.  .

There was also a well supported Libre race where several of the above cars also ran, Walker's Connaught winning.

Whoever filled in the lap chart and results was very studious.   Hope this helps.

Whoever filled in that programme did a great job considering it was pouring with rain for a large part of the meeting according to the report in Motor Sport (September 1955 issue page 23).

Thanks very much Peter, Gaz, Tony, Stephen and Targa,

Marvellous, great work, much appreciated.

That Snetterton meeting must have set some sort of record for the number of convicts competing in the same Pommie race meeting to that point in time?; JA Brabham plus his Kangaroo Stable buddies, Tony Gaze, Les Cosh and Tom Sulman.

The photo is another one from Fred Pearse' Collection; Fred Pearse, at left, with Dick Cobden and AN Other and bruised Ferrari 125 in a Gold Coast (wonder if they called it that then or if that label is a marketer's later invention?) servo after the 1954 AGP on the Southport roads, DNF

I've always been fascinated by the Chamberlain since I first became aware of it via John Medley's sensational article about it in Cars and Drivers, Barry Lake's late, lamented, way-too-short-lived 1977'ish magazine.

Seeing and hearing it at the '78 fiftieth AGP celebrations at Phillip Island took the interest up another couple of gears.

Because the car 'is all about' the nutty two-stroke-eight I've always overlooked the Indian engines first fitted to the car as being a largely irrelevant part of the journey to the real-deal.

Peter Reynell’s posting of Fred's photo of the Indian Altoona-Norton, Chamberlain modified engine changed all that, this article is the result; Chamberlain Indian… | primotipo...
