In all reality, that is a bit dismissive. Daniel didn't have to take up this gig with Red Bull. He could just retire. If there wasn't some respect, why would he do it at all?

Doesn't fit the "Red Bull is evil" narrative.

It's a pretty dumb thing to say.

Perhaps so. However, I don't think his job at Red Bull amounts to much in the way of driver prospects. He probably had a reasonable chance of getting a race seat at a smaller team. He did not seem to pursue that avenue, so it's safe to assume that he wanted to either get a seat at a top team or step away from it. I think he's taken the position at Red Bull because it offers him the opportunity to step back a little whilst, at the same time, maintaining a closeness with the F1 circus  - meaning that his knowledge remains up-to-date and keeps the door open for other possibilities in the future (should he wish to stay within the motorsport world)

I think it is simpler than that.
Ricciardo could not afford another beating(imagine if Magnussen or Albon somehow managed to blow him away) so it was either retirement (whilst leaving some doubt on people minds on why he could not make his McLaren stint work) or lose to world champion Max Verstappen.

You are already reading every kind of excuses for him, the same they don't use for Rookies or "unlucky" drivers with difficult cars. After all he is a smiling race winner so all is good.

If Dan can be on the grid, I see no reason why the likes of Schumacher Jr., Giovinazzi would not be given another chance.

In a way, this is the point. He needs to know if he could still have it before he goes back in against another strong team-mate. If he finds he doesn't through sim work or a testing session then retirement is unavoidable but at least he will have avoided the public crushing over a full or partial season.

He seems to be the guy who likes to take the easy way - he could have gone to a smaller team, put in the effort, do really good and maybe earn a call from one of the top teams. But he would really need to work for it.
This way, he is in RB and maybe he gets the place in the team if Perez leaves. He won't really need to work for it, his mouth will do all the work - maybe he could convince Horner the give the place to him.
Iirc, he had a similar attitude when he joined McLaren. Norris was really putting in the effort, not just with the driving but with the technical side, I remember how he was with the engineers while they were taking the car apart. DR kinda ridiculed it and had an attitude like he doesn't need to try and work hard, he'll just sit in the car and instantly drive fast.

DR has had a very public mental health battering the last few years with lockdowns, covid, missing his family and ultimately performance drops. I don't think people realise how strict Australia was with handling lockdown and what it has done to peoples minds over the world long term. We are seeing all sorts of personality and behavioural changes.

The poor guy is a human like all of us and just needs a breather, a mind reset and RB offered him a varied PR role to get his mojo back. Not solely with the intention of getting a seat as a third driver in the garage.

Listen to beyond the grids latest interview, the guy says it himself. He just needs to reset and RB is home.

I'm not a big DR guy, but the Beyond the Grid podcast was very transparent in my opinion. I have a lot of respect for his perspective. Just on principle, if he wants to come back, I would be very interested in what he can do.

Just read that Drive to Survive (allegedly) shows Gunther scoffing at Ricciardo who is believed to have asked £10m for the Haas drive this year.

If true, given how much Mclaren paid him to end early (rumours say it was around £18m to sit on the sidelines) his salary for 2023 would have totalled £28m - more than one of his eye-watering Renault seasons.

Nobody says no to easy money, but that's laughable. Kinda lost a bit of respect for him if true.

Alonso would probably offer to pay Haas £10m if his options became that thin, just to stay in F1.

I’m not entirely read up on the subject, but wasn’t it so that Daniel would only get that money from McLaren if he didn’t manage to find a seat? Meaning that if he had taken that Haas seat it would’ve meant no McLaren money.

If the above is true, I don’t think it’s weird he’d ask 10m.
