I am very sorry to record George’s passing a few days ago. He was a friend and fellow MG enthusiast and racer for over 40 years. He had a remarkable collection of MGs and Cooper which he raced all over Europe until just a few years ago. We usually only met at sprints, hill climbs and races but he used to ring regularly for updates and more recently via email.
He and Carol were extremely hospitable and passing their motorhome in the paddock resulted in an invite for coffee (or something stronger after the event.)
I spent some time with him this year at Thirlstane where he was not up to driving the Cooper MG and was letting his son drive it. We reminisced about past events and in in particular how a phone call results in a car being re-united with its body.
George had bought the remains of a 1952 Cooper MG (a works car once driven by Stirling Moss) which he had found in SW Scotland. By that time it was on poor condition and had had a 60s plastic body fitted. George had discovered that it had spent some time in the Carlisle area and asked if I could find any photos of it as he was recreating the correct body. Remarkably Ed Glaister came up with the news that he knew where the original body was hanging in barn. Thus the correct body went on the car which then competed in many events including latterly the Stirling Moss tribute display at Goodwood.
George was still busy and was rebuilding another MG special at the time of his passing.
A true enthusiast.

I had some entertaining correspondence and telephone conversations about the Cooper-MG with George in years past.  I had heard that he was unwell, but now my sincere condolences to his family and friends...
