The Bernie documentary sounds very interesting, especially to those of us who have watching F1 since the '60's.  From what I've read I can't figure out how to watch it in the USA...

Finished watching this 8 part series last night. It's great seeing some of the old footage in the early episodes. Many old video clips that probably haven't been seen since they were originally aired.

It's well put together - basically Bernie narrating us through the history of F1 through his experiences but in typical Bernie fashion he doesn't really give much away either.

It was nice to watch and it's great if you don't know much about the main stories of F1 history. It's aimed at being a documentary about Ecclestone, but it doesn't really go very deep. He gives his opinions on some of the people he met along the way, but barely scratches the surface. The final episodes feel like they're in a hurry...

For the hardcore fan with many years of knowledge, it's not going to blow your mind. The editing of the old film and effort to find rare footage is excellent though

I just finished it and it was great ! Fascinating guy and always has been. Ever since I read Sid’s book where he spoke Bernie’s high level,of intelligence I have looked at him differently.

Autosport's review of the documentary states that Ecclestone has made it for the benefit of his youngest son, Alexander Charles "Ace", who is two years old and may lose his father before he is able to form any memories of him.

I just watched the first part of Lucky (which the makers have obviously guarded vey well, because I have not been able to find a free copy of it online, except in full Russian, which I don’t speak) and I have some questions:

1. Ecclestone talks about the accident of Stuart-Lewis Evans, and he says something strange: that Evans had started to run away from the accident and that if he hadn’t he could have survived the accident? What did he mean? Wasn’t Evans, as logic states, trapped in the burning car? Anyone notice this in the documentary?

2. In episode 1 one can see Jochen Rindt getting out of the car and on the back of his overal the sponsor Gold Leaf (which sponsoring of Lotus shocked the establishment) was cut in half and reversed, so it read: Leaf Gold. Was this to circumvent some rule about advertising on overals?

3. Bernie Ecclestone has very bad eyesight and all my youth I saw him, on film, and on photos, screwing one eye closed, in my perception, to see better with his good eye. I realized that in the last years of his reign in F1, he did not do that anymore, nor does he do it in the documentary. What happened to that? (A poignant example is in the documentary, he is filmed during the burial of Rindt. He sits there, third row, hidden behind bigger gents. He leans to the left to see the proceedings and there, there he does it again.)

BTW: I am fascinated by all the footage in the documentary, but the content added by Bernie himself is rather underwhelming.

Not seen Lucky, but my recollection is that Lewis-Evans ran in the opposite direction to the people who could help him. It's mentioned in Hawthorn's Champion Year.

I was able to watch the show a long time ago thanks to a friend who had it. But I just checked and it's available for any of you who have Discovery+. It's only 8 episodes, so even if you don't have a subscrtion, it's worth the 3.99 pounds to get one just for a month. I can't recommend it highly enough. Great commentary, much of which you've likely never heard before, as well as incredible footage that's likely rarely been seen before.

 

It's also apparently available to Prime Video subscribers in some areas, but apparently not here in the U.S.

The footage is great, but I would love to have an in-depth discussion about the spoken content delivered by Ecclestone. My impression is that the makers primarily have chosen to portray Ecclestone as a person with a lot of gravitas, a wise old man sitting on top of a snowy mountain delivering us wisdom on the brink between life, death and Olympus. The ending - with Ecclestone staring wistfully out over a lake and in the very last shot, laying on a bench reaching out to take over one of his grandchildren - was worthy of Leni Riefenstahl.

 

My impression: Bernie gave some new insights, a lot of self-promoting interpretations of historical events and, if I dare say, regularly lied through his teeth. Or if he did not lie, he has deluded himself and reinvented his own past (which humans are wont to do).

Watched it on Discovery+ ages ago and was disappointed. Nothing there that wasn't already well known and seemed more of a self serving piece than anything to me

I felt the series didn't really achieve what it probably set out to achieve. You don't learn much about the man himself. Instead we are left with Bernie narrating various important points in the championship's history from his perspective, and not a great deal more than that. There's nobody to challenge his comments or ask difficult questions.

I enjoyed it, in particular for the quality of the video archives. For that I would still recommend watching, but I didn't think it wasn't ground breaking stuff.

Many famous people write their memoirs. Lucky is Bernie's video memoirs. Like F1 Mike said, the only person speaking in the entire series (apart from snippets of archive footage) is Bernie Ecclestone.
