So Speedcafe says that Seidl is going to leave Mclaren and join Audi:

https://www.speedcaf...audi-f1-effort/

Big news if true - haven't seen it reported anywhere else?

If true, aauuuccchh, he is one of the only ones bringing credibility to this mclaren project, but who can blame him, things just moved to slow, maybe he was pro a mclaren audi collaboration, the reasons can be many

Blimey, the 2023 team boss silly season is much better than that of the drivers.

@andrewbensonf1

It's team principal merry-go-round day. Andreas Seidl is to leave McLaren to join Sauber/Alfa Romeo to lead their transition into the Audi works team in 2026. First reported by @RacingLines, this has been confirmed by BBC Sport sources. A new McLaren TP is not far behind.

A shame to see him leave, but his stock is high right now and he must be more convinced about the Audi project long-term than the chances of McLaren getting back to the top - not a great endorsement for the future of the Woking team.

Bummer.

I always thought he'd end up wherever Porsche pitched up in the Future.

I wonder who we'll get, it's a bit like Premiership Football mangers - except an even smaller pool of talant.

He's German, probably wants to get back to a German speaking environment*.  And Audi will be a big deal compared to McLaren.

No biggy, there are plenty more fish in the sea.  Just not the tiddler Binotto, please!

A shame, but makes sense for Seidl. AFAIK his family never moved to the UK.

He probably wouldn't, but really he's moving from McLaren to Audi to build their first F1 team into a winner, encouraged by the commitment they showed when in WEC.

Selling the car collection is unrelated to McLaren Racing, which is no longer within the same financial structure as McLaren Automotive. McLaren Racing's financial status is fine.

Yes.

You should on occasion entertain yourself with the absolute amazingly poor commercials on TV, look at your significant other and say "How the heck can anyone look at this and think... That is GREAT, lets run with that".

Considering he has worker at Sauber in the BMW stint 2000-2009 and has afterwards worker with Porsche LMP1 (became the actual TP), this was, I dare say, always going to happen. It's possible that he joined McLaren with the future intention of Audi merging with them, but as the plans went cold, he jumped ships to the actual real future Audi team. Would have probably happened later on just as Audi would have come along, but with Fred moving to Ferrari, it happened sooner. He has always been connected to them.

It's a shockingly logical move which would have explained why he, if you believe the rumors, didn't agree to join Ferrari.

Wow, wasn’t expecting that. I know he hasn’t been Alonso’s race engineer for years, but I still so strongly associate him with that role.

Bit of a nonsense statement considering they only signed Seidel in 2019.

I disagree, like mentioned, if there was one person that gave credibility to this hopeless mclaren project it was seidl, now he left, lets be honest, if success was around the corner he wouldnt be leaving i think, now he will be responsible for setting up a audi works team

He is only 23 and so many things can play out.

What is stopping Norris making the same move? It’s arguably easier to do now if he’s preferred by Seidl. And the last time Mclaren were “asset stripped” by a new factory team, it worked out well for all of the leavers!

Wow, that was far more unexpected than Seidl to Audi, seeing as he already had VAG connections from WEC.

Andrea Stella is a really, really good race engineer, so I think he will make a great TP for McLaren.

Good for Andrea Stella.

His period at Ferrari was when race strategy was actually good.

Him and Pat Fry had operations down on lock, and that was the only reason those Alonso Ferraris could even challenge for the title.

I'm surprised that Seidl was overlooked by Ferrari. Or maybe he wasn't and likes the noise coming from Audi?

I think there is nothing that McLaren should worry about.

Seidl wanted to get back to his freinds and take the chance to see what he can with his life.

The Seidl thing probably came too early for Ferrari, seems like they weren't really prepared for the vacancy.  He was probably committed by the time that happened (even if he might have been interested, which I doubt).

Vasseur already had a pre-agreement around July. Seidl was always going to Audi, he made it clear he wouldn't renew his McLaren contract.

Vasseur leaving Sauber is what triggered Seidl's early exit from McLaren.

Either way, I think all 3 teams will be in a better place with the change, and Andrea Stella should do a good job as the TP. He's the one I most pleased about.

It sounds good, Stella I always liked (from the little I saw of him). But that says nothing about him being a good TP. I would hope so, but it's a whole different game to what he did so far. Binotto was also considered quite brilliant at what he did... before he became team principal.

The difference being that Binotto is a technical engineer, while Stella has always been involved in race operations. I would say Stella is definitely more suitable for the role than Binotto was.

Yes, but there is more to running a whole team than race operations.  A TP needs to be an overall manager, able to control and motivate all of the team staff, from aero techies to accountants to the tea lady.  Being a good race engineer or a good designer (or even a good driver) is no guarantee of success as TP.
