A meteorologist's son writes:

 

The phrase 'wrong kind of snow' was actually coined by James Naughtie on Radio 4 and then taken up by the press, after which it became something of a cliche. The BR spokesman went on to explain that the snow which had fallen was not the type of snow normally encountered in the UK, but different - much more powdery and softer than the usual larger and wetter snowflakes typical of our maritime climate, which tend to come down when a warm front from the Atlantic encounters very cold air. This was the kind of snow you'd expect in the Alps and the sort skiers love. It was also a particularly heavy fall and BR's normal snow clearing equipment - snowploughs - was unable to cope with it, since you need snow blowers to shift it effectively. But they don't work well on wet snow. It also caused problems when it got into electrical equipment and door mechanisms - again not usually a problem with wetter snow, which - being heavier - doesn't get blown about as much.

Blogsworth, my heart goes out to you, we were a family of Christmas birthdays, mum on Christmas day, father and I on the same day a couple of days later and brother the following day.  My mother reckoned that only once did she ever get two presents - back in her young days a suitor gave her TWO boxes of hankies!!   I hope you do better!!

Indeed. This one time when I got to allocate the phone numbers in a new office, I made sure mine finished with 917. 

Just recently I opened one of those clickbait articles, this one about the 'worst sports cars ever made' and the 912 featured. Shocking. As did the FIAT X1/9, the MGB, Renault 5 Turbo 2 and the Lancia Fulvia. Obviously it was American, as they were mainly worried about 0-60 times, not nimble handling and decent brakes.

I have driven several MGBs and they handle like a wet sponge, brakes are at best average and they are fairly slow.  Go ok with a 289 but then take a flex is the power is too much. And most are rusted out!! And were in the 60s. Attractive styling however

X19??  Very average car, and they were rusting on the showroom floor!!

MX5 is the car most of these wanted to be and never came remotely close

Thanks to our good friends the Post Office workers, I received a Christmas card from an old friend yesterday. It features a number of older book covers and is titled "Christmas Books"

 

Titles include '1001 Ways to Stuff a Turkey', 'Thermal Underwear for the Fuller Figure', 'Zen and the Art of Sleigh Maintenance', 'The Dangerous Pudding Book for Boys' (now that does sound interesting !), AND.........  "Know Your Snow" by Crispen Evans !!!!  Even the alleged 'author' has a Christmas ring to him ! 

 

Surely the perfect gift for the amateur meteorologist next Christmas !
