It just occurred to me that Toto Wolff's first name is actually, you know, a nickname, like Checo Perez or Keke Rosberg or Howdy Holmes.

Do you know what his real first name is? You know, the one he was born with and how his mother presumably addressed him when she was telling him off. I had to look it up.

(NB this isn't a trick, it's just a regular Germanic name, albeit a somewhat unusual one. I am somewhat interested in whether in German-speaking countries people ever call him by this name or if he's always called Toto there as well.)

On the basis we are not his friends and therefore not part of a matey nickname arrangement, we should call him by his real name…

How surprising 😉

Yet, I didn't know. Thought I once read Torsten and that stuck with me. Wasn't too far off tho.

I did know, but only because I already looked it up some years ago, and it‘s a name that definitely sticks with you. IIRC it‘s derived from an old nordic name meaning "Thor‘s spear", which is genuinely very cool.

I had thought I had known but just looked it up and it's his middle name that I had thought was his first name.

I remember him being referred to as Christian "Toto" Wolff back in 2009.

No. But since it got its own thread it's probably either Christian or Totomilian.

It's quite common in Germany for people to used shortened names. I had a colleague called 'Addi', but considering he was probably born in the 1960s I did think his full name was a bit of a strange choice by his parents. You can probably work it out.

it is.

Just so I do this correctly, is that with a hard g or a softer j sound?

It's the name he goes by in public. But when we're talking about him, we can use either as we please really.

Wolfgang Wolf is the former manager of Wolfsburg FC

Isn't that called 'nominative determinism'?

It's quite common in Germany for people to used shortened names. I had a colleague called 'Addi', but considering he was probably born in the 1960s I did think his full name was a bit of a strange choice by his parents. You can probably work it out.

I had a Jewish friend in my motor club who was always called Fred.  But his first initial was 'A.'  Unsurprisingly, he never used that name but what his parents were thinking when they called him that,  I cannot imagine.

Since yesterday, I've been wondering where I first heard it, so I think you may be correct. It rings a bell.

I am reliably informed that Patrick referred to him as 'F-dawg'.

I thought it was the diminutive of Throckmorten.  Throckmorten Wolff just rolls off the tongue!
