Back in the early 1970s I shot a rather large number of photos at different race venues.  Even if I have been a member of this forum for a long time, I have never tried to publish any images, so this will be my first try...   I start with one image from the 1971 German Grand Prix.  If successful, more will follow.  By the way, all photos are shot during practice.

I think it is the ducting for the oil coolers.

As has been said, very good photographs. Thank You. But sadly none of my Austin A40 Farina, parked somewhere in one of the campsites !!   :stoned:

Yes, oil cooler ducting, and (I think) between them right at the back, the oil tank.

I have a photo from the campsite at Wehrseifen on the run down to Adenau (that's where I was camping).  Maybe it shows up there?

I love that these remind of a forgotten part of motor racing history - that cars in practice sometimes carried a T, a different number to the race number, or no number at all.  As far as I am aware there is no research on this at all.

Thanks for the thought, but I think we were somewhere on the other side of the main road opposite (and down a bit) from the "main" entrance.

A memorable first drive abroad in my own car, we called in for a (very slow) lap of Spa on the way home, and finished off with a night at Clerés - a great meal after several on the primus stove, and the morning spent in the wonderful museum there (now gone sadly).

Again, fantastic pics, thank you so much !

On the downhill run into the Fuchsröhre.  Quite a fast part of the track.

Sorry, no.  Those that I publish in b&w were shot in b&w.  I am not sure why Ferrari brought that car along, but it appeared on track during pre-race testing.

Graham Hill in the Brabham BT34 'Lobster Claw'

Back in 2000 or 2001 we chatted to a nice gentleman in the Driver's Club at the Nürburgring Oldtimer GP.  It turned out to be Ean Pugh, who owned and raced the BT34 at the time.  When we got home, my wife sent him an enlargement of the photo below and got a lovely hand-written letter in return.

What is the manufacture of the second photo in your paddock shots, the one with the interesting high mount dampers connected via a-arms from atop the hub carriers?

Really nice photos.  In an era of zoom and pan and all sorts of other techniques to liven up the image (in print or video), I really appreciate seeing these lovely shots framed with the track and terrain they were navigating.

In my database, I have tried to identify as many as I could get hold of. Of course, I cannot claim to have caught them all, but I have information about a lot of them. If you are interested, just drop me a private message.

I have tried to record all the cars used in practice at F1 events:

Not thinking of that specific race, but one reason for having even numbers only in many races was apparently because the odd numbers were used in practice.  But I've never seen corroboration of this.  Other than a mysterious pic of a D50 with the number 35 on it and the driver said to be Castellotti; it's in one of the Clymer books, which I do not have to hand right now.

These really are outstanding images. Have to ask, what kind of pass did you have, and how ?!!!!

And, of, course, where are we going next ?

Thanks for posting - they're all good, but I especially like that of Ickx - the B1 Ferrari 312 was just such an aesthetically characterful and distinctive car. The same could be said of the BT34, which I found fascinating when I first saw it at Brands - one of those designs that you so wanted to be successful because of the inventive thinking it represented. In a way, a spoiler for what was to come innovation-wise, once Gordon was given his head by Bernie. And the BT34 was certainly exciting, as the cars with Jack's name on had previously been rather stodgy in terms of looks, even if effective dynamically - the BT33 being a good case in point. As I look at these cars, which are so familiar to my eye, I'm more than ever struck by how samey and enigmatic (not in a good way!) the cars of the current era have become.  I know all the technical arguments and the case for F1 technology being real-world relevant, but 50 years ago the chemistry was very much more alluring.

I didn't have any special pass, just a normal entry ticket, so most of the images are shot from spectator areas.  Could be that for some of them, with no marshals around, I sneaked into off-limit areas.  As for the paddock shots, I sneaked in early in the morning...

I have not decided what to post next, but I will certainly start new threads soon.  For example, I can choose from 1972 Spa 24-hours, 1972 German GP, 1973 Swedish GP and a number of F2 and Touring Car races on Swedish tracks.

Konica Autoreflex with 100 and 300 mm lenses and an East German Praktica with 50 mm and 200 mm lenses.

What great photos - thank you.

Not many enthusiasts knew how good Konica’s kit was in those days, and their lenses in particular were superb.

I still haver both my Konica and my Praktica equipment to this day, but sadly the film winding mechanism of both failed decades ago.  And, even if they were functional, I am not sure I could get film for them today, let alone have it developed...

In a separate thread, I have started uploading images from the Formula 2 race at Mantorp Park (SWE) in 1970.  I will, however, continue with images from the 1971 German GP in this thread until I either run out of photos or am being told to stop....
