After visiting the 1972 Spa 24-hours I went on to Nürburgring for the German Grand Prix the week after.  On a damp Wednesday before the race, Lotus and Matra did some testing.  I just walked up to the pits from the paddock and stayed there to shoot some photos.  Life was easier for an enthusiast back then...

Haven't expressed my appreciation lately, because your photos leave me speechless. Wonderfully evocative.

Here's a photo of Derek Bell in his Techno from the same race, at the Karussell by the looks of it.

From this website, which has lots of interesting photos, history of Techno etc.

That Tecno looked and sounded glorious on the coupe of occasions I saw it . I know its performance was as poor as its reliability but it was red , it was Italian and it had a howling flat twelve - which has always been enough to bounce my heart rate off the rev limiter...

I stood next to Merzario in the middle of Stavelot, to watch his T33 Alfa recovered from the armco following practice for the 1973 Spa 1000 Km.  (He'd been back to the pits and driven out in a road car). A local lady, looking  much like a children's book's 'farmer's wife', asked him disapprovingly (in French): 'Did you do this?' He shrugged, but I couldn't see his expression, as I was looking down at his hat

Some March images.  I remember one (or maybe both) of the works cars of Peterson and Lauda arrived at the track on an open trailer towed by a Ford Transit.  Some teams had less to spend back then...

Well it is a Karussell but I guess the Kleines one rather than the Caracciola one 😀

Hi Lars.  I'm deeply impressed with your pictures!  Thanks for share them!

Do you remember what film, camera and lens you use to take them?

Again, a very big "thanks" for share this treasure.  I suggest you to protect them properly.

Great images, Thanks!!!

Arturo started to wear the cowboy hat when he was sponsored by Marlboro (from 1973ish). With Astor he was mostly wearing caps.

I used two cameras, Konica Autoreflex with 100 and 300 mm lenses plus a Praktica with 50 and 200 mm lenses.  The film was probably Kodak Plus-X

Careful, careful with what you write!  Even if Art might not be offended, in today's society there is a great risk that someone might be offended on his behalf...

I'm guessing, based on wing angles, that some F1 engineers didn't think much of laminar flow theory.

No...

I guess they're more interested in their 'we tried that and it worked' practice.

Why would they? They were designing cars, not aeroplanes...
