I was going along the high street recently and saw in a charity shop window a copy of Autocourse 1988-89 but not with Senna on the front but a Leyton House being driven by Ivan Capelli. Now unless I’m in a different timeline he was not champion this year could someone please clarify if this is a glitch in the matrix or similar?

A google search finds this:

Unfortunately the link is dead so can't find anything else. Maybe a Japanese edition because of the Leyton House link?

I ordered my Autocourse 1987-88 recently and when it arrived, I was surprised to see not champion Nelson Piquet on the front, but Alain Prost! I should have guessed then that I had accidently bought the French version.

But my copy of the 1988-89 Autocourse does have Ayrton Senna and not Ivan Capelli on the front.

Hazelton did a whole bunch of alternative covers for sponsors and suchlike.  They're not collectible, for some reason, I would have thought they would have been more so because they would be rarer.  But I got the 1984 edition with Jaguar green cover for something like a fiver at a time when the 'original' was £loads.

Most people don't realise they exist, as they were never sold through retail outlets, so only the specialist booksellers are really aware of them and they're not obvious unless you have the 'normal' edition to compare. The print runs were usually in the low hundreds and they were normally given away as freebies to teams' suppliers. Stella & Rose Books are currently offering a copy of that Jaguar one for £42. They are definitely collectible by the cognoscenti! There are Shell ones for most years and there's apparently a very rare Hesketh version of the 1974-75 edition, complete with an embossed teddy bear. In the six years I've been selling books for charity I've seen just one turn up, with a Lotus cover (can't recall the year!); it sold for a good premium over the standard edition and went to a US buyer - in Texas IIRC.

The way to spot them is (usually) that they have a plain white back cover, which would normally carry Marlboro or some other advertising. The spine usually has the sponsor's logo on it. They often have different endpapers as well. There were also special versions of some of the French text editions and a few of their IndyCar ones too. Similar for Motocourse. Possibly Rallycourse too?

There was a list of them all somewhere on t'interweb at one time, but I can't find it now.

An Spanish version of Autocourse was published both in 2006 (2005-2006) and 2007 (2006-2007). The first one included this Campos-related cover:

It'd be nice to have a complete list of all alternative covers.

I suppose the alternate English language editions such as the Jaguar edition  just needed a different dust jacket so quite easy to produce for sponsors whilst non-English editions would need a full print run anyway so might as well change some  photos and add some local colour.

This 1975-76  one is currently for sale on ebay £40

Went in and bought the said book as it is one I don’t own a single Autocourse and if you own one at least it was an amazing year.  The actual hard boards have been put on upside down inside but the content has no real special mentions about Leyton House and it is all in English inside. Not too bad for £7.50

I haunted Ebay for a few years and managed to acquire a complete set of Autocourse annuals from 1961. Along the way I managed to acquire the following with non-standard dust jackets:

75-76 Martini Racing

83-84 Jaguar

84-85 Jaguar

00-01 AP Racing celebrating AP Formula One clutches

13-14 BRDC

16-17 Red Bull which as far as I can see is the only with extra material-4 pages with a message from Adrian Newey and some Red Bull racing photos. I bought that from a RB employee.

I got a cheap 1961 edition without dust jacket from a garage sale in California that seemed to spend three weeks meandering across America before getting to me, but the best bargain was a 1964 edition misdescribed as a 1963 edition for just over £100. It's a bit battered, but I managed to get Big John to sign it at a Motor Sport dinner back in 2012.

There are a couple of special editions going cheap on fleabay at the moment: 2005-2006 Coulthard and 2006-2007 Red Bull. The seller mentions an autograph in one of the books, but doesn't know who it is so I'd guess it's DC. I'd expect to get them both for around £20 including postage, so cheap enough really
