Really sorry to hear this. An integral part of Renaults return to Grand Prix racing but sadly his day of glory at Dijon in 79 was overshadowed by the Arnoux / Villeneuve battle.

RIP Jean-Pierre  :(

Oh no. Very sad. Such a talented driver/engineer.

Away from Formula 1 my outstanding memory of JP is his great chase of Flammini at the Thruxton F2 in 1976. He brought the lovely yellow Elf 2J almost up to the back of the works March, before overdoing it at Village with three laps to go. A real tiger on his day.  RIP Jean-Pierre.

I was there that day too and got both their autographs in the paddock afterwards

Very sorry to hear this. I always thought Jabouille deserved more credit for his massive contribution regarding Renault's successful Grand Prix return in the 70s.

As pointed out above. A very talented driver as well as engineer. RIP Jean-Pierre.

Sadly this was expected, Jean-Pierre was the only former Tyrrell driver too ill to help with the forthcoming book.
There's so much to remember from a long career:

His work with Peugeot in the 1990's, proving as fast as he was in the 1970's.
His management and development work with Ligier
And of course.. Renault. He deserved the highs after sticking through the lows.
RIP

Streiff, Tambay, Jabouille......at least he lived a fairly long life....but I'm saddened. Six year old me was mesmerised by those turbo Renaults at the end of the 70s. Thrilled to hear he was at Le Mans in the early 90s.

Very sad news; the real Renault F1 team of the late 70’s and early 80’s was a real force for change and great to watch.

Jabouille and his contribution was always underrated; seeing him win Dijon ‘79 was a privilege.

Very sad, although I heard he was very ill a few weeks ago, around when Patrick Tambay died.

A very, very quick driver on his day and proud (?) owner of maybe the strangest looking F1 career record I’ve ever seen. Multiple wins and poles, but literally no other results….twice as many poles as career points finishes. A fascinating driver.

More sad news.

I was at Dijon in '79, and his race was sublime, but over-shadowed by the lunatic scrap between Villeneuve and Arnoux for second. As has been said, a very talented development driver, and very quick when he had the chance.

Repose en Paix, Jean-Pierre.

Ironically I was writing about his 1976 Formula 2 successes this very afternoon.  Once finished and mailed, I checked today's news and...

Very sad.  Evidently accomplished as both a fine engineer and very competent and quick driver, I regret never really having met him at all.  But I recall never a bad word said against him...and within the racing world that alone speaks volumes.

His place within Grand Prix history is assured.

Being able to finish a 25-year Le Mans story with the likes of Sauber and Peugeot says a great deal. I'm sure it was JPJ I saw leaping out of the Peugeot 905 in 1991 when it caught fire in the pits. Seems like only yesterday.
