He passed away last week already (January 26th AFAIK).

Ended up spending a amiable hour chatting about his engineering etc.

Indeed this is sad news but not unexpected.

 

In August last year (2022) Mk 14 Components, a business that specialises in providing parts for Lotus Elites ( Mk 14), and which is under new ownership held an Open Day at their new premises in Essex and invited David Lazenby to be the guest speaker.  The day was very hot and humid and quite uncomfortable for this Australian attendee and I understand a few Elite owners stayed away. Never the less David gave a very informative overview of his time at Lotus and of the "company car" he had commissioned with Fred Bushell's approval. David was on oxygen treatment at the time but enjoyed a long chat with me about his Elite, (chassis number 2001) which I had been able to examine in 2020 here in Melbourne.

I wrote an article about my visit to Mk14  and the open day for the Historic Lotus magazine and also for the Club Elite Newsletter.

I can't believe we have lost you Laz. Without doubt the best racing mechanic ever. He could turn his hand to anything and had the patience of Godot. When I arrived at Team Lotus in 1961 I was assigned to work under him on Jimmy's Lotus 21.He taught me everything about a racing car. I am sure it was Laz's help in the beginning that enabled me to successfully look afterJimmy's car in 1963.

Jeers Laz. I will raise a very large glass to you tomorrow.

My condolences to you Cedric. I wasn't born until a year after you came over to England but many years later it was your book that made me aware of how good a mechanic David was.

Sad news indeed.  I drove a1969 Hawke DL2 run last by me in 1983 at club races at Mosport and Shannonville.  I can say that it was a remarkable car capable of embarrassing much newer and more refined designs.

Another sad piece of news.

 

I went to Pace Products in Suffolk to get a custom dry sump system for my car. I had to take teh front engine mounting untit for measuring up and Dave kindly asked what on earth car it was. for.

Likely something else. Robinson helicopters are not built from kits, they are factory-built with standard airworthiness certificates.
