It's strange. You would think there would be at least one driver that would say "no" to either the 'speed' flashes or the multiple layers of random shapes and colours. All the designs on this page so far are examples of the mess that is modern paintschemes. A generic sneeze of shapes and colours. Garbage.

Well that is horrific.

Albon finally released from under the horrible yoke of Red Bull hijacking half of his helmet.
We were not losing anything
Posted 06 February 2023 - 21:25
Albon obviously had a Red Bull helmet too long,
He's just taken the Williams colours and applied a generic racing game helmet template to it.
How uninspired, like most helmets these days

Helmet designs simply don't matter any more, what with the halo and drivers changing designs every other race...plus all the daft generic whooshy crap.
Gone are the days where you'd be at the circuit and almost feel a bit starstruck seeing a prominent helmet zoom past. Probably something that many modern F1/motorsport fans don't care about, but it was certainly part of the show (for me at least) back then.

Funny part is, those speed flashes are nothing new, they are there for more than 15 years! You would sound reasonable if you would've said in 2010 that they would become outdated in a few years. Yet, in 2023 they took more that 90% of all racing designs and I mean all motorsport in general not just F1. I'm also baffled why there are so few drivers who chose different designs. All the more reason to appreciate standout designs such as some of Alonso's helmets.

The Duracell on the visor strip is a neat way to do that. Otherwise...

I believe this started around the eraly 2000's and Raikkonen was (one of) the first to use this kind of helmet design
And even if he changed them a lot (some were quite good), most of them were unmistakably Kimi's.

Actually laughable that an actor can come up with a design that would instantly be the best on the entire grid. An actor!

As a fellow Irishman and designer, this makes me happy

I remember when Raikkonen started I thought his helmet looked like an off the shelf karting helmet - and now most of them do.

Must be the island of Ireland that makes people sane for coming up with good helmets.
One of my all time favourites is Irvine's. Simple, distinctive and the one bit of personalization is on the back side. Where it should be.
That's my photo. I took it in the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu in 2002.

Absolute garbage, all of them. I would design a more recognisable helmet in paint. Absolutely clueless.

Hopefully it doesn't get screwed by too many sponsors.

Well done Bottas. Kinda reminds me of a fancier ‘dark mode’ version of Hakkinen’s.

I think the problem is that drivers simply delegate their designs to helmet designers, and I guess there are just a handful of designers working with the teams.
So as long as the design is in the hands of these few, we'll get more of the same every year. Plus, I think the drivers are afraid their designs would be deemed too simple or unimaginative, so the more "stuff" that can rammed into the helmet, the better.
But I agree it is mind-boggling that not a single one has grasped the marketing power there is in a distinctive and recognizable helmet design.

I find it absurd that helmets can create such disagreement. At the end of the day its called individuality, otherwise whats the point? They may as all drive in plain white helmets. I'm sure they would all look better with just the colour scheme - just remove all the sponsor decals, which to my mind make the colour schemes more confusing than they otherwise would be.

I think that’s the point…there’s very little individuality at all any longer.

I'd say it's the paradox of excessive individuality: the designs are mostly so fussy, detailed and constantly-changing that most of the drivers now lack an recognisable individual design. There was definitely a sweet spot between the days of cloth caps or mostly plain, monochrome helmets and the current situation.
Well, one day somebody realized that money could be made selling countless mini helmets, as many models per driver as designs...
