Alonso almost 6 tenths faster than Stroll  :p

I never liked Stroll, but you have to do him justice, he's recovering from a bad accident and is way out of his normal mode.

I'm new to F1 - when Verstappen was on his last lap, what did those purple bars underneath his time mean?

Purple means a best time of all drivers, green means a personal best time, yellow means it's not either of those two.

Maybe after that interview Toto received a call from Brackley from a chief engineer confessing they’ve just found out that they’ve accidentally been holding the performance potential graph upside down all of last year?

That seems just as plausible as if they seriously thought they would be in the fight for p1 and race win this weekend.

I have to say it's pretty impressive how thoroughly the Hulk has dominated KMag so far this weekend after sitting out for most of the last 2 years.

I've always said the Hulk was a plain better driver than Kmag, but I thought the time away not driving anything at all would've been an handicap. First impression is it doesn't look like it is an handicap at all. Nicely done

I keep reading RBR are good in race trim, but we don't know that, do we? They surely were last season, to the point of making quali irrelevant at most tracks. Who knows if the RB19 will do the same? Long runs in practice and testing were good, but not miles ahead of the competition.

Beautiful:

Stroll used to be a good starter, wonder if that translates higher up the grid today. I'm gonna be bold, P6

Whew it's hot here today. I feel for the F2 guys who don't get to race in the evening.

Really looking forward to this one.

I suspect a Max win unless there's drama, but hard to predict the rest of the podium or top 10.

Just hoping Alonso can taste some of that sweet rose water.

Predictions: Alonso 7th and Stroll 10th, only one retirement, Magnussen looses front wing on lap 1, 15 replays of actionless start during lap 3, DRS passes in the midfield, "IT'S MAX VERSTAPPEN WHO WINS THE BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX"

Last year, you could say the same about Magnussen. Being away for a year and 7th in the Bahrein qualification. Better than Hülkenbergs 10 yesterday......😀

But seeing Magnussen fight a teammate that puts pressure on him will be interesting to watch.

Yes, I remember thinking this when Hulkenberg replaced Magnussen at Renault. When Magnussen was at Renault in 2016 Jolyon Palmer outpaced him quite often (I think qualifying was 11-8 in Magnussen's favour), particularly in the latter half of the season, whereas the following year Hulkenberg comfortably beat Palmer - I think Hulkenberg qualified ahead in every race until Palmer was dropped for Carlos Sainz. However, despite this and his performances as a substitute for Racing Point/Aston Martin (which ranged from solid to outstanding) I thought that spending so much time away would make it hard for Hulkenberg to come back in and match Magnussen, especially as he is now in his mid-thirties and I think Magnussen now is a better driver than he was in his Renault stint. Hats off to him for a fine qualifying performance yesterday.

Perhaps a touch pedantic on my side, but why not just name this thread (and each subsequent race) "2023 Bahrain Grand Prix"? etc

I get why there should be one thread, but it just seems odd posting in this across the whole weekend during qualy and race when it starts as a "build up" thread. Also easier to find for newcomers??

Really hard to call Alonso’s prospects in this race. He usually races better than he qualifies, and moves forwards in races from his grid position. And if the Aston’s race pace is as good as people think then you would have to say he will be in the hunt for P3 or P4.

However, the Mercs normally race well too. So he could easily end up P7. But I’m sure he won’t go down without a hell of a fight.

That's been bugging me as well. Same as having a team Technical Thread and a general Team Thread as well. Where discussions of one subject are being held in a different thread than it should be.

Seems like the forum went into its usual 'blame the marshals' mode as a result of the red flag in Q1.

Ferrari screwing it in 1 2 3... yes

1 competitor less

Red Flag WOW

Red Flag for that?

Omg just VSC it

Sure let’s use a red flag for something that can be solved with double yello

What nonsense is this, now?

Really? No chance of a local double waved yellow and a quick-footed marshal?

seems a soft red flag for something not on the racing line! Hope this isn't an omen for the season

Makes you wonder why they did those numerous VSC and SC procedures during testing last week if they’re not going to us

Ugh this is not a red flag man

First race and we already getting tippy tappy suspension :(

No need for red flag.

Also 5 minutes to remove a tiny piece of the track?

And they are only the first few of the negative comments - the forum only allows a limited no of quotes.

I wonder how many of the posters have had any real experience of being track-side and clearing up carbon fibre debris?

Having just replayed the R5 Q1 broadcast I have the following comments, all timings are approximate.

It was about 2 mins from the first visible piece coming off the car to RC calling the red flag - at which point the clock was stopped with 13:23 left on the clock.

Commentary stated that the red was for multiple pieces of debris on track - the Ferrari had already shed two visible bits of cf but I think it may have still have kept circulating until the red was called, so could have shed smaller bit al around the  circuit. 5.4 km of circuit with a minimum width of 12 m is quite a large area to check - not sure how many course/track marshals they have at Bahrain but IIRC Silverstone and used to have around 800-1000 for the GP, and that is for all the multitude of roles.

From the engine sounds on the broadcast it took another 2:50 for the last car to return to the pits.

About 4 mins after the red being called they announced restart in 3 minutes.

The cars started to leave the pit lane about 7:20 after the red flag.

Given that it is not great idea to be out on the circuit hunting for small pieces of cf when cars are still circulating - it takes a lot longer if you are trying to look for the bits and also looking behind you every time you hear a car approaching.

For those querying the failure to use the SC/FCY, you seem to have missed the point that the clock stops for the duration of the red but does not stop for your alternative solutions, and all the drivers would probably have returned to the pits anyway for the duration of the clear-up.

Seems to me the time used checking/clearing of the track was not unreasonable and allowed all the drivers the time for adequate qualifying laps.

One final comment - what would you all be saying if driver (insert name of your favourite here) had run over a small bit of debris and ruined his tyre/qualifying lap and failed to progress?

Don’t you mean: ‘A walk in the park?’ AFAIK a ‘cakewalk’ is an fairground attraction where you walk on shaking planks and other unstable surfaces… so not easy at all…

In English, a cakewalk is something achieved very simply. Not sure about U.S.

I still think a red flag is too much. It is too disruptive.

I have also noticed in the junior series that the marshalls are waving yellow flags if a car locks up or goes wide at T1. This is not a yellow flag situation. What if you're trying to overtake someone and suddenly you're inside a yellow flag zone because somebody ahead locked up?

In fact it's an American expression and does mean what you say. It was a simple form of dance performed in competitions to win a cake. Not many people know that.

True, noticed it today in F2 as well. A car spinning out is different than a lockup that simply forces you to run wide.

Because he's good at what he does. One of the best of the current pundits imho.

Edit: I guess with covid being in a better place now, common sense has allowed it.

Lets see how he does in a full race distance first. I mean, its much "easier" to withstand a few qualy laps for a few minutes, rather than one and a half hours of huge effort

Highlight was seeing Alonso together with Agostini. Quite the screencap that one.

Will watch half of the races live to see more Fernando shenanigans. Cheers y’all, enjoy the season. Congrats to Max for the win.

Alonso was amazing. This is hopefully a beautiful comeback for a real star.

Red Bull dominance is scary.

Ferrari are hopeless.
