I have had 'Plus' subscription for a number of years and it has auto-renewed without problem.

This year I received an email asking me to authenticate with my bank (Barclaycard?).
When I tried the link to authenticate the only option shown was for PayPal - I use VISA!

Now 'Plus' my plus subscription has expired, so I tried to re-subscribe manually.

I entered my details and VISA number without problem, and was then presented with an authentication screen
using Baclaycard PinSentry. I don't know what this is, and have never seen it. A complete lockout.

How the hell am I supposed to re-subscribe to subscribe to 'Plus' ?.

A system that has worked perfectly for years has been screwed up. Don't Autosport want subscribers & income?

Anyone else having problems?

Please sort out your subscription/website method.

Barclaycard only introduced PINsentry last March, Rob, so that's probably why you've never encountered it here before. It was part of the revamp of the older 'Verified by VISA' system. The Paypal option would be used as a third party method, but probably not with Barclaycard, as I don't think you can link a credit card to Paypal accounts - only debit cards.

The Barclaycard explainer does mention that you should be able to use most card readers issued by banks, so if you have one from another bank that option should work.

Alternatively - if you don't have a card reader - you can get a one-time code texted to your mobile phone. Assuming of course that Barclaycard have your mobile number on file.

So, just to clarify, it's not Autosport doing this, it's Barclaycard, as part of increased security for their customers.

Thanks Vitesse2

You say it is a Barclaycard thing, and not Autosport?

Imageshack auto-renewed no problem in January with VISA. Esure Insurance auto-renewed in February.

I don't have a mobile, so I am snookered as it seems only credit cards are accepted on Austosport website and not debit cards.

Do you know if I can subscribe to 'Plus' by phone? (I have tried to call support once today, but no-one available :| )

That all sounded a bit odd, so I did a bit of experimenting. Looks like there's a problem with (at least) Firefox-based browsers, as I only got a blank page when I clicked on 'Credit/debit card' - which looks greyed out - using both Waterfox and Firefox (although as I had lots of other tabs open I didn't try safe mode, which might fix it). I opened up Vivaldi, which is Chromium-based, and it looked like that would work as it gave me links to the payment service. Should therefore work with Edge, Opera, Brave and Chrome as well.

However, whichever type of card you use I think you'll need a card reader. I've had some things auto-renew on my debit card without needing to re-authorise, but others haven't. So it may be down to discrepancies in which payment systems the people you're paying are using and/or the level of security they've implemented. Not auto-renewing car insurance would probably cause chaos!

Thanks for you time ( & effort) Vitesse2

I have managed to get my subscription renewed.

I used my debit card number as a test and it was accepted, I received an on screen code, which the bank requested when they phoned me to authorise the transaction.

Two things spring to mind...

I thought on-line transactions were supposed to make life quick and simple, not get you to jump through hoops and compete in mind games.

Second. I thought we voted for Brexit? Why are we being driven by an EU Directive?

Anyway, all's well that ends well...
