I had never heard of this hi-po version either.

From the article: "With a bore and stroke of 4.30 inches by 3.70 inches, it was the largest member of the MEL family in ’58 and intended mainly for Lincoln."

Considering the '58 Continental had 4900 lbs spread out over a 131" wheelbase, it could have used every bit of the 400 hp.

I have seen a Mercury with the 4bbl version of this engine. I had no idea of the power until I read the MEL story somewhere.

Power variations may well have been with fuel quality. Even 10.5-1 needs far better than the fuel offered here in Oz in that period which was inferior to 91octane ULP 25 years later.

I believe from what I have read fuel in various US states varied in quality at that time.
