Sabine Schmitz should've been there at least

Sabine was great, full of personality and brilliant around the 'Ring.  But she did little elsewhere, which was a pity.  She could have been much more successful in motorsport terms but she seemed to prefer to stay in Nurburg.  And now sadly we will never know what she might have achieved.

It's an interesting list.  I am pleased to see Liliane Bryner and Claudia Hurtgen in the top 10 as they are often overlooked.  They have done what women need to do in the sport, just get on with it and race the men and beat them.  No Sports Illustrated, no ghetto series, no PR puff.  I want to see a women win Indy or Le Mans or a GP but I don't want it to be some great surprise or special event, I want people to say "Well, she was always going to do it, she is one of the very best"

If we define rallying as racing, which it isn't, then it's fine to some extent.

But...that Junek isn't even in the top 10, when she is in the top 1, is an atrocity.  And anyone who comes up with that should be shot for missing her out.

One more missing which I can't remember the name off, maybe she was not as good I as possibly recall, A very interesting list, there is a lot to sink into.

Should we argue or discuss?

It's not as if there's ever been a woman racer who's won a world title whilst defeating a Ronnie Peterson or Keke Rosberg, is there?

Speaking of which, I don't know if you've read Marshall Pruett's latest Mailbag, but I doubt either of them is on the other's Christmas card list...

Exactly. A curious omission. And if you say "well it's just karting", at least that's racing whilst rallying is not.

Ask William Hunt about the importance of Karting

The one missing I could not remember

Betiske Visser, she is naturally active - Are we only going by retried drivers? This being the F1 Academy thread, does a discussion and subject not deserve being moved to a thread of it's own?

Both Beitske Visser and Fabienne Wohlwend are currently racing at the Nordschleife (with Pippa Mann).

Takes care of the JP rant (which I share) about Christina.

How does that resolve the omission of the most successful female racing driver in this century?

No.. it doesn’t, and Billy should beg forgiveness.

I think the active/non-active aspect may be the reason, I am also trying to understand why Rallying is not racing.

I am also trying to understand why Rallying is not racing.

For the same reason that racing is not rallying.  I hate it when people talk about 'So & So is racing in the WRC' because (s)he isn't.

Rallies, sprints and hill-climbs require the driver/crew to drive against the clock without seeing their opponents at that time.  Races are everybody in a bundle, first to the chequered flag wins.  Two rather different styles of competition, but all falling into the category of motor-sport.

For the purposes of this thread however, racing drivers and rally drivers of the female persuasion should be bracketed together.

It is encouraging that, for all its many egregious faults, the W Series has provided a lot of openings for female drivers.  Not just on track - for instance, Alice Powell has become a pundit and also did a very respectable job as co-commentator at the recent Goodwood Members' meeting.  I doubt if (m)any of the women now turning up on and off track would have got there had W Series not shone the light on to the female gender.   And I say that as someone who was pretty hostile to the concept of a ghetto racing series for women only.

i posted that long list, with female drivers, to give those women the attention they never got, or dind't get much off. To put the light on them for a change. Many of them are not known well.

PS: from what I understand, Alice Powell currently works as a driver coach for female drivers. Don't know for which drivers or which team.

I sure did not forget her! But I only included drivers that are not active anymore since that was the concept of the top 10 list of that website / magazine. Otherwise the list would have been considerably longer. Nielsen is still an active driver.

I think Alice Powell was also a driver coach before W Series, Billy Monger being one of her drivers.

She needs another year in F4 (hopefully she does it this year), she has been very impressive for someone that switched from sports cars to single seaters late last year, but based on what I have seen of her she is probably lacking a bit raw pace and race craft to the similar experienced (in single seaters) likes of Slater, Nakamura-Berta and also to a lesser extend Powell, which is obviously a huge effort since I rate them as very talented, but F3 would come far too early next year, especially if she isnt doing F4 this year. FRECA seems to be a more sensible step if anything.

She is certainly the first woman in forever that with the right timing, luck and backers could make it to F1 or thereabouts and not embarrass herself. Her sports car effort and the early indicators in single seaters are certainly no coincidence.

FRECA it is.

Excellent news  Very glad to see this. So... it's an Iron Dames-backed effort, but which team? I presume Prema, right?

It's Iron Lynx, which is basically the same team as Prema, right? That's their workaround for the 4 car limit I guess.

FRECA it is.

Causes a clash with five WEC events this year (Spa, Sao Paulo, Austin, Fuji and Bahrain) so her LMGT3 seat with the Iron Dames will be filled by Rahel Frey for those events.

That's great news

Buuuuuuuuuut I think Pin should entirely prioritize FRECA over F1 Academy, winning Academy seems about as meaningful and career advancing as Chadwick winning W Series... and even if she misses a round she'd probably still win the championship anyway lol

https://formulascout...-line-up/117878

Prema had worked behind-the-scenes with Iron Lynx when the latter first joined Formula 4, but had scaled back its involvement by the time the two teams tied up under a new owner. That change however then led to Prema actively supporting Iron Lynx through the 2022 Italian F4 season, and vice versa as Prema ventured into sportscar racing that year.

Formula Scout understands a similar dynamic will be behind Iron Dames’ expansion into FREC, which could prove crucial for its competitiveness since it has missed the first two pre-season tests, and which in part explains why Garcia has been free to leave Prema and that Pin will be free to race in round one at Hockenheim on May 11/12 despite it being the same weekend she is supposed to race an Iron Dames-branded and Iron Lynx-run GT3 car in WEC’s Spa-Francorchamps Six Hours.

There are three further date clashes. FREC heads to the Hungaroring on June 22/23 when F1 Academy is at Barcelona, the Sao Paulo Six Hours is on July 14 when FREC is racing at Mugello, and on September 14/15 the Fuji Six Hours clashes with FREC’s races at the Red Bull Ring. In all three of those instances there would be no way to do double duty.

Since Garcia had been set to fill Prema’s fourth car, and as a points-eligible driver due to winning the 2023 F1 Academy title, it is not yet clear whether the team’s involvement with Iron Dames will now impact on it being able to put a fourth entry on track on occasion for a guest driver as rival teams do.
