Look first off, I've got some news

Formula 1 is back. It's back again, until it's gone again. Then it's back again.

But more importantly Fake Marina along with high ticket prices and special corporate VIP packages have returned.

giphy.gif

But F1 Sprint ™ has not.

At the moment of writing it says for Sunday: "High chance of rain and thunderstorms in the Miami area in the afternoon. Race air temp: 30°C"

I wouldn't bet against five minute intense downpour and then the track drying up in 15 minutes because of the heat and humidity.

(Not that they'll dare to race during that drying-up period)

Apparently it's going to be a "real" marina now.

Please appreciate the use of quotation marks.

It rained in Miami a few weeks ago. The track and surrounding area didn't handle it very well.

This will be the first race to have the new driver introduction ceremonies on the grid. I am sure it will be fun and not cringe in anyway.

Thankfully I've been skipping everything before the warm-up lap since I don't even know when

Apparently they added water to the marina:

But to me it looks like it's the same old same old and they just filled up a small swimming pool

Rain probably the only thing that will make it worth watching...although they'll probably spend the entire time behind the safety car if there is anymore than light drizzle

To have no racing at all due to the rain or to have a race at a venue that no one wants? Don't make me choose. Please.

Great OP - just one small niggle (sorry - I work in aviation!). Those times you listed for the race weekend in the UK are BST (British Summer Time), in other words LOCAL times.
At the moment GMT is -1 hour from the local time here in the UK. So as I type it is 9.38pm local time here in Scotland (or 8.38 GMT) Let’s hope for no worse than an inters - slicks - inters type race as we all know now sadly that full wet conditions means no running

Because racing in the rain open up for more drivers to be in with a chance, because there will be actual racing. The privoso being that they actually let the best drivers in the world race in the rain.

For those of you unfamiliar with Florida, this is pretty much any given day in the summer. Pure sunshine, 15 minutes of thunderous torrential hell out of nowhere, then more pure sunshine.

Would love this to happen for the race.

This year with new cars and old cars the grid can be a bit more irregular. All teams seems to have its own upgrading cycles.

Got to say I am expecting yet another get away from RedBull, perhaps by Max, then Checo. But Ferrari’s are strong and Merc is on the up turn. With more upgrades cars, the order is very much open for the grabs.

The second year with the wing cars, this year with a bit loser ground effect than the last year. It could be a whole new search for set up. This rain fall ‘attacking’ the track could be a game changing elements.

Sadly this is my feeling too. The season so far has been less than vintage, and I don't have high hopes of Miami changing this.

Max is already one of the better wet weather drivers, in the car with the most downforce.

Then we have cars and tires that kick up enormous amounts of spray, making visibility really poor. Those cars also dry the racing line much faster than usual, so there is even less chance of an offline overtake.

And rain races around street circuits are normally affected by yet more SCs and red flags.

Thanks, but no thanks. Those days are long gone.

To reflect the mood in this thread:

They've painted racing lines

and put up a DRS spot

Where to overtake

and certainly where you're not!

Don't it always seem to go

That you don't know what you've got till it's gone

They've painted racing lines

(to falsetto) and put up a DRS spot

They made Miama a track

and put in a fake marina

And you have to pay a thousand dollars

just to see 'em

Don't it always seem to go

That you don't know what you've got till it's gone

They've painted racing lines

(to bariton) and put up a DRS spot

-----

JP can finish the song, methinks, with his lines.

I agree, with more races it's also diluting it, along with the chances of underdog stories lessening due to DRS just putting faster cars in front.

I just don't look forward to a race weekend like I once did.

I find it frustrating that a city as vibrant and scenic a tourist destination as Miami has such an unbelievably dull location for a racing track.

Think of all the cool, beautifully filmed movies and TV shows located in Miami, and compare it the F1 track. Which is supposed to be the world's most glamorous sport.

Without the feel good story of Aston Martin and Alonso this season, there is absolutely nothing interesting whatsoever, is there?

It doesn't look as if any other team will win a race on merit for the foreseeable races. Just 4 races into a 23 race season and even the drivers and TPs have written off any championship fight.

I love F1, but couldn't have cared less if we had another 3 or 4 week gap between races to skip Miami.

Adding to my comment above - the Jeddah circuit is in a really beautiful and spectacular location, but they run the race at night.

Then for Miami the stick it in a cardboard and vinyl marina. Liberty Media, for all their perceived success, aren't particularly good at this really.

**DIRGRESSION**

This was always my aversion to expanding the calendar so much. You force your core fans to effectively miss some races if they have 'a life'. Once you can justify missing one, you can miss them all.

Regretfully, I timed my last weekend around Baku, making sure i was home in time for the races. I really wish I hadn't now. The weather was nice.

Yup. This was discussed on the latest MissedApex podcast. When there was 18, I’d never miss any races or quali. Nowadays, there’s so many PLUS sprint races and sprint qualis…. It’s a real hard sell to be able to sacrifice that much time on prime days to watching F1. So you end up missing a few races and just watching the YouTube highlights.

And then you’re not watching the whole story of the season playing out.

Between 1997 and somewhere around 2015 I didn’t miss a single race. Nowadays I probably watch less than half of them LIVE.

Indeed, it is very difficult. So far this year and planning ahead for the first 10 races...

Bahrain - Saw whole weekend in person
Saudi - Quali recorded, Race live
Australia - Quali recorded, race live
Baku - Missed whole weekend due to travel
Miami - Both quali and race recording as have events both days.
Imola - Will be there in person
Monaco - Away again in the sticks so likely to miss whole weekend.
Spain - Will miss quali due to family event, and will record race as travelling back that day.
Canada - Will miss quali due to a reunion, will record race as travelling on train home from that.
Austria - Will miss quali due to wedding, recording race as travelling home.

I just can't justify fitting my life around the F1 calendar like I used to.

This will be the first race to have the new driver introduction ceremonies on the grid. I am sure it will be fun and not cringe in anyway.

Ugh gawd.

Can F1 not have ONE race in the USA where it doesn't go full cringe? I still laugh at that massively over the top WWE intro thingy they did for the drivers at COTA a few years ago...

It's just a bit of fun. I always try and tune into the Indy 500 early enough to see the driver introductions there. It's a nice build-up to introduce all the personalities and it's always interesting to hear the crowd's response to each one.

The difference is, all the Indy 500 ceremonies are the real thing. You get the feeling that all of it has some history and legacy behind it. That's just what it is. While F1's efforts at "Americanization" are so desperately forcing it all that it always comes across as fake and awkward.

COTA wasn't so bad lately, by now it seems to have found the right balance and built a bit of its own identity. Miami last year was much, much worse and Vegas will probably top even that.

That kind of reinforces Anja's point that it's an American thing, though. It's not just at Indy. NASCAR does it sometimes, as did IndyCar at Iowa.

The first race intro I remember going 'full Hollywood' was the TransWorld 1998 Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, featuring boxing announcer Micheal Buffer shouting 'Let's get ready to ruuuummmmble!'.

What about love bugs, many about. Maybe later in the week when high humidity is forecast?

If they are at the track, they could truly create problems for cooling besides being a general nuisance. They are a pain in the ass for commuter vehicles.

I'll likely be missing the race live this weekend as I'm on a stag do for the next 4 days. Rubbish track, rubbish cringing celebfest all weekend...not too bothered about missing it live especially with the abundance of races this year.

Be prepared for another Brundle grid-walk cringe, so that Liberty and Sky can get them likes and tweets:

496k views, when a 'normal' gridwalk gets between 80-150k views. They love this cringe.

Great to see that they're bringing back the driver 'entrances' too. I can see Alex Albon entering the circuit with this playing in the background...

F1 have also changed their intro for this race:

More likely to be this:

I’m really surprised they didn’t turn this into a sprint F1.

One of the F1 teams should take the style of Wynwood Walls Grafitti Park attraction from Miami, and let an artist spray their car with a design to show off at this event!

I just don't look forward to a race weekend like I once did.

The exclusivity has gone from F1. As Bernie once pointed out, the Rolex has been turned into a McDonald's, and no, I don't happen to think unlimited growth and fan engagement is a good thing. The whole business is now 90% water and 10% whiskey.

Thank God for the open wheel series of choice here in the US. For me, that tinge of excitement that I'd get before a race now goes to IC. Better value, better competition and racing, more authentic personalities. I'll still watch F1 simply because it's a bit of racing on TV but it's nothing special any more.
