I've been catching up on the highlights of Monaco practice today and would like to say that the TV broadcast looks spectacular. Lower angles, much more aggressive panning and zoom, lush wide angle shots showing the vertiginous nature of Monaco's streets and the thin ribbon of road that makes the race track. Looks marvellous and so fast. Bravo.

I'm all for great camera angles as long as they last more than a second.

The improved TV coverage is likely because Monaco has brokered a new deal to stay on the calendar. In that deal they have handed away the TV coverage to FOM, Monaco used to do this themselves, as well as the sponsorship alongside the track. This was also done by Monaco, but you clearly see the FOM style with large portions of the track being draped in a single sponsor instead of a couple of sponsors what used to be the case.
But indeed, the TV coverage is waaaaaayy better than ut used to be.

Some of the new camera angles are great. But they have to be careful with the Piscine/Swimming Pool exit camera; sometimes the cars are zoomed in so much that you can't see the car in relation to the barrier and the kerb which makes it impossible to appreciate the speed and driver skill; all you see is the nose of the car coming towards you. When they get it right it looks good.

I think it's a case of not knowing just how far behind the Monaco broadcast had got before seeing the alternative. Up until now FOM taking over the broadcast felt like an internal matter, but watching practice today it was a very different and much more exciting session.

I guess it's not an entire surprise the people who film Grands Prix for a living are actually pretty good at it.

Not only are there more cameras there a wider variety of lenses and some cameras adapted for motorsport/F1.  That’s something only a specialist OB unit or sports truck would have.

The filming might be good, but that doesn't count for much when the director is crap at his job.

And the usual shots of crowd, pit crew yawning, team bosses doing nothing in particular.

Monaco coverage may be better than previous years but they keep showing lingering pictures of people in the garage while cars are on track and they keep missing the action with slow camera work slow clap emoji broken heart emoji

Much improved! A lot of the artistic stuff however is often leading us to miss what the car is actually doing and how close they are to the barriers.

I hate it when the car goes missing for a half a second and they pick it up flashing out from behind the barrier.
Showcases the speed but could miss the start of a shunt

Those camera angles made qualifying breathtaking to witness, especially the battle for pole during Q3. Let’s hope they don’t do a Monaco 21 when Gasly was about to be overtaken by Vettel and we got a replay of Stroll.

The director is still crap though. Focus on pitboxes while people are hotlapping in Q3.

Here’s a rich toff lady quaffing champagne on a balcony… and then we can pan to the left and catch an arty shot of an f1 car passing her by.

Wonderful.

I miss the days of Valencia where they had a special camera set up above a roof-top pool with a load of bikini-clad girls in the foreground told to stand there in the pool for the whole race, so they could get the gratituous shots in every few laps.

Plus the now compulsory shot of an obscure American sportsman who has to have his name captioned because nobody in Europe knows who he is.

I wish they'd save the "celebrity" shots for Drive to Survive and let us enjoy the racing.

This is not a complaint, merely an observation.

The placement of cameras, the angles, the overhead/at-a-distance shots, etc. were quite different from the way the race has previously been shown on broadcasts.

After a while, because I'm a fogey, started to miss the old ways, but the novel perspectives did reveal stuff one couldn't see before, so it wasn't all an insult to tradition.

Forgot to complain about something. :p

There is all too much video-game-like intrusive crap.

On one lap, Magnussen’s car seemed CGI’d with the name box above, the white brackets around it, the bloody graphics marking the distance, etc. etc.

I find that quite a useful graphic actually.

I thought they did a good job! Enjoyed the new shots. There was a period when it rained when the TV director lost track a bit but at that point there was a LOT going on, so we can forgive that.

No, we can't! :) What they lost track of was Alonso on his out lap on new mediums trying to undercut Verstappen, and Verstappen entering the pit lane trying to stay in the lead of the race. They lost track of the battle for the lead and showed a bunch of other cars!!!

Not only that, they swapped between multiple battles, so it was hard to track what was happening.

At that moment they should have concentrated on Verstappen and Alonso, indeed. That was for the win.

Otherwise, good coverage.

Caméra placement, great, better sense of speed than before.

Director, awfull. We followed Perez a lot for whatever reason. I get that seeing Max driving by himself is not enjoyable but Perez had even less reasons to be shown.

Or maybe he just doesn't know one RedBull from the other.

I disagree about the TV director. Perez was a big story of the weekend as he's in the clear championship favourite car. His weekend was one big calamity and seeing it unravel was an important thing to highlight.
I felt overall the telly did a good job considering how much was happening.
Caught a number of passes in the dry as well. Good show !
