We'd all love to see another driver next to Max, just like we did with Hamilton once Rosberg retired, but as with Mercedes back then, there's just no point.

More: Red Bull doesn't have a Russell...

Correction - they don't have a Russell because they specifically choose to ignore getting them. When Alonso and Vettel came enquiring not long ago they were rebuffed and had to join a new team or retire.

Everybody and their dog knew Perez was not a good qualifier and he was specifically chosen for that reason so as hed never start ahead of Max.

In fact there have been times this year where Perez has made max look rather average.

@LukeSmithF1
Charles Leclerc will start today's race from the pit lane, according to Ferrari's Jock Clear: "We've taken the opportunity to change the gearbox, that's effectively all the backend, really to make sure there's nothing on there that is untoward." #F1 #SpanishGP

Hopefully a completely new PU too. Be so dumb not to.

Are they in penalty range for those already then?

It's the only smart thing to do. Surprised they didn't change everything with so little penalty.

This is Ferrari we’re talking about, they don’t often operate things smartly.

Maybe in your parallel universe?

Russell was never an option for Red Bull because he was under contract by Mercedes. They tried to sign Norris though.

Montmelo forecasts still showing light rain for the afternoon. Would be great to have conditions like FP3, which could cause lots of tyre confusion.

I think mixed conditions is the only way we will see a fight for the win, but even then, we know how mighty Max is in the wet.

It does look like it’s going to be a walkover at the front. The problem with DRS now is that even if Max gets a poor start and is P3 on lap 1, we know that he’ll easily be able to get to the front within a handful of laps.

Looks like it’ll be an interesting battle behind him, however.

Three statements and three obvious falsehoods. Well done!

The only way we have a fight for the win is if Max DNF's. Otherwise, probably best to ignore him and enjoy the fight for the final podium positions.

Looks like rainclouds will arrive in the surrounding area around 1pm onwards, whether any hit the circuit is a different matter. Even if they do, it doesn't look like it would be particularly heavy, greasy track at best. Would make things a bit more interesting though.

Our only hope of a fight for the win is if Max tangles with someone at the start and gets damage or if it begins raining as he has just passed the main straight and he has a big gap to everyone else who can pit and get on the inters to chase him down.

Watched the F2 start: If you commit to the escape route in T1/T2, you will gain ground. Will it count as an "off track"? If not, I can see Alonso using it every lap :)

It'll count to track limit violations so you can only do it so many times before you start getting time penalties.

Hm not really. Russell was a Mercedes young driver so they couldn't have got him. Vettel was looking for a seat at a time when Albon was still tipped to continue with Red Bull and as we know they waited until the season end to decide on Albon's faith by the time at which Vettel had signed for Aston Martin long ago. Alonso had signed with Alpine already before the season had started, so he wasn't available either.

Everybody knew qualifying wasn't Perez' strongest suit, yes, but it was between Albon, him and Hulk as there was nobody else available at the time. With hindsight knowing how Hulk performs now, he would have been better likely, but at the time Hulk was the one who hadn't been driving for a year. Perez had beaten Hulk in points most seasons as team-mates and had knowledge from driving the Mercedes copy of Racing Point and the Mercedes engine, so it was fairly obvious he was the best choice to replace Albon.

In the F3 race, it was proven that taking the escape route in T1/T2 can be faster. Wonder how many will try if that is true also with a F1 car. I guess the F2 race will give us a clue.

Alonso will try😂

The F2 and F3 races have been so much more enjoyable to watch with that shitty chicane out of the way. Sector 3 is great now with the new T10 and the flowing final corners.

@ChrisMedlandF1

Some pretty heavy showers cropping up on the weather radar that could hit the track before the race. FIA forecast says the risk of rain will decrease as the race goes on #F1 #SpanishGP

If you check here, definitely some rain / isolated showers heading towards the track, but still 2 hours to go

Looking forward to this.

As ANF says the improved final sector seems to have made a big difference to the track.

Looks like there could be a whole host of fascinating battles from first back.

Ignore Max*, and this will be a cracker I reckon.

*no offence Max, not your fault you and RB are this good

It was OK in F2 but they had a lot of tyre delta with the strategies.

What worries me more is how the escape road from turn 2 to turn 3 does not cost anything to take at the start, in both F2 and F3 a driver in P2/P3 took it and emerged in almost a better position than they were into turn 1. Stewards had nothing to say but I can see it making a lot of drama if it happens in F1.

SUNDAY 1225BST: Showers developed recently between 5 to 15km around the circuit, more particularly so out towards the NE. Shower evolution is expected to peak in the lead-up to race start, with current FIA guidance citing a 40% risk between 2-3pm local.

I have to say Vettel on a EBD car looked a very special driver too.

For me, no doubt Verstappen is a all time great, but i will wait to see him out of a Newey car for a better overall evaluation.

Max is a very very special driver. And easily one of the goat. Surely that is clear by now. And Vettel was great too,but not as good as Max.

Honestly, they may not replace him this year, unless he totally messes up, but I would love to see another driver next to Max. I don't think they will beat him all the time, but i would love to see a Norris in a Red Bull. Hulkenberg is probably a bit too old, but I would love for him to have a top car for once. Or they could do McLaren one over and make Piastri an offer he can not refuse. It could spice things up, and if RB stays dominant in the next too years, it actually might keep Max interested. Winning all the time in the best car and being the best driver overall could get boring at some point and I could see him looking elsewhere. He is a racer above all, so he thrives with competition.

Judging by Ricciardo's inability to deal with the McLaren, Norris might be disappointing in that RB.

Steiner reprimanded for the language he used describing the stewards as "laymen" and referring to "professionals" in other sports.

"Mr Steiner stated that if he had meant to insult or offend anyone he would have used much different words. The Stewards do not dispute this."

Looking at the radar and how dark the sky is, it looks 100% that rain will pass over the circuit.

At what time?

Not sure but the radar they showed had a very big cell (with quite intense rain) approaching pretty rapidly...it certainly looked like it would be in the vicinity within the hour (and this was about 20 mins ago, so in about 40 mins) - I'm making massive guesstimates here based on a 5-10 sec radar clip though.  Looking at the radar it did look almost impossible that the rain wouldn't hit within the next hour or so, to me.
