A bizarre exchange occurred when a Brazilian female reporter was interviewing Lando and asked him an excellent question to which Lando responded “Good question….you ask the best questions here, well done.”

As soon as he said that, some other reporter interjects by saying “You are one hell of a liar”. WTF (to my ears, it actually sounded even worse like “You are a bloody liar”).

Lando immediately calls the guy out, and defends the female reporter and it didn’t escalate. Now I don’t know the background or context or even if it was just a misplaced joke, but certainly Lando and the female reporter didn’t seem to see it as a joke. She was quite shocked but didn’t escalate it.

I really hope it was a misplaced joke, a very stupid one but one that didn’t come from a bad place, however sadly I suspect it’s yet another typical case of a man who just couldn’t handle his fragile ego being shattered by a woman who does a better job than him in what he thinks is a male domain being sports journalism. If it is this reason, what a d*ckhead.

Sorry if this should belong in the Paddock club, please feel free to move.

There was an incident like that on Sky Italia with Federica Masolin, Matteo Bobbi and Davide Valsecchi. Bobbi and Valsecchi made comments about the way a woman was dressed in the Barcelona paddock. Masolin was not impressed.

The end result was a suspension from Sky Italia of both Bobbi and Valsecchi: Sky Italia suspends F1 commentators after sexist remarks on air | Sky | The Guardian

Yeah, definitely "You're a bloody liar." English for sure.

I saw that previously and didn’t think it is in the same ilk as this Lando interview. In that, Bobbi and Valsecchi were being puerile and according to Masolin she later said she didn’t even think it was offensive. I can’t find the reports now, I just checked again but I did read her saying she didn’t take it seriously. She seems to have a close friendship with Valsecchi and it didn’t come across like they were making her uncomfortable.

It’s a really difficult one, but I think men and women can joke around and it really depends on the relationship and the context. For me, and being completely aware that I don’t know the context yet, it seemed the Lando interview one was very different with some random reporter interjecting in a rude way. It may be something different though with more information and context.

That's a plain weird reaction, aside from being an exceptionally rude interjection.  I'd say Lando was quite restrained!

It kind of reminds me of the time where a Japanese kid was interviewing Cristiano Ronaldo and tried to speak to him in Portuguese. The kid was struggling but at least gave it a shot, and the people on the floor were laughing at him.

Cristiano then shut them up by telling the kid he was doing a good job, and then directly asked the audience why they're laughing?

I'm glad these stupid people get put in their place by the Interviewee, it's really uncalled for. Let people do their jobs.

Not sure what the relevance is of the reporter being female? On that Twitter video clip, it looks rude, but I don't know why accusations of sexism are being thrown about...

I don't see anyone crying sexism here, but in a male dominated sport, I think it's fair to mention that it was a female reporter. Whether it was sexist or not is really for the perpetrator to know.

Sorry, I misread FLB's link above.

Still though, I don't think it matters that it was a female reporter.

My immediate thought was that it sounded like Simon Lazenby having a laugh which backfired dramatically, I'm convinced though that it wasn't him because when whoever it was repeats "Youre a liar", there's a tone in the voice that sounds aggressive.

Storm in a tea cup, it was a pretty average question so I am guessing Lando was laying on the charm and the other reporter was having a bit of a laugh about it.

Sadly, I don’t think we yet live in a world where we can claim that gender doesn’t matter in situations like these.

Except it wasn’t an average question. It was a good one but I think I can guess why you see it as merely pretty average.

If you think that is a good question then fair enough. If you want to make silly comments you just show yourself up.

They guy who said it is clearly speaking English with a foreign accent ... plus Lazenby doesnt do the pen interviews.

I know it wasn't Lazenby, I made a point of saying so. Sounded like a British northerner to me, I detected nothing foreign about it at all.

Becker has been an F1 reporter for 15 years now, she's a well-known figure in the paddock and that quip from the other reporter was extremely rude and uncalled for, since the question was actually good (and I say that as someone who usually finds her comments during races to be trite). Anyone thinking the guy would have made his little joke to a male reporter (and that consequently, gender didn't play a role in the episode) is just living in Wonderland :drunk:

I haven't seen it so I can't really comment, but male friends/colleagues do often belittle each other in a jokey way.

But if she looked annoyed then I presume it wasn't in that context.

Tbh, if I was the reporter, I'd be more bothered by Lando's rather condescending "great question, well done" remark than anything else.

It's a journalist's job to ask good questions, and if someone has 15 years experience in journalism, they don't need to be congratulated for asking a good question like it's their first day on the job. Just came across as a bit patronising to me.

I don't know, the more I see of Lando, the more weird vibes I get from him. Don't really get his popularity.

Thanks for mentioning her by name.  👍  I was just about to post “guys she has a name”.  Mariana Becker.  Had the interview happened with a male journo we wouldn’t be hearing “Lando has exchange while answering questions from a male journo”.  It comes from baked in remnants of a patriarchal society.  Most don't even realize they're doing it though it doesn’t excuse it.

:rotfl:

At least you don't hide your bias.

The inane nonsense that the Sky crew ask these guys these drivers compared to an actually fair question, it's incredibly unlikely he was being patronizing.

Well, to be fair, the other journalist was directing his "insult" at Lando it seems, not the female journalist.

I can honestly see how it's condescending of Lando in the first place. Even as a male, if I have 15 years experience in a job, I don't need to be congratulated by a kid with a bit of a smug attitude.

Says a lot about this season when a slight interview occurance gathers such attention.

I know it's tough to find new things to discuss on the internet, but seriously?

I think you are really letting your emotions getting the best of your logic gilles76. It was a weird thing of Lando to say and followed by a smirk it really doesn’t look honest. The other reporter maybe just thought it was cringe and decided to throw in a joke?

Lando always smirks when he's in an uncomfortable situation, watch any interview of his where he's in an awkward spot. He also does it when he's annoyed. It's a different look from when he's genuinely laughing.

I can't believe we're doing this tbh

I’m not in the least bit emotional.Actually I’ve been the most open to potentially being wrong. Pretty much every one of my posts in this thread I’ve acknowledged that I don’t know the context, the relationships etc. and that I was only speculating based on how it came across on face value. That is, I’ve well acknowledged possibilities other than how I may be perceiving it.

What I see on the other side though is a bunch of men not bothering to look at possibilities other than how they wish to perceive it. And strangely enough, some have managed to even turn it into an attack on Lando ignoring the fact that some reporter has basically not minded any of his business and decided to call an F1 driver a “bloody idiot”. The relationship between Lando and that male reporter must be on fantastically friendly terms for that to be a joke. Luckily for him, Lando is nothing like James Hunt. That would have been a great interview, see the aftermath of calling Hunt a bloody idiot to his face.

You may be right or you may not be right ... I cant comment on that....but I just want to let you know that most of this post is based on your own supposition and based on your own world view .... the little snippet that we have seen is not enough to reach this conclusion (or any other significant conclusion IMHO).

I am only adding this because normally you are a pretty rigorous guy when it comes to analysis on his forum - and Ive no idea why you are not being objective on this one .... and figure that probably you dont realise that youve gone fully subjective on this one ... so I am just asking you to step back and think again.

You may actually be 100% right in your conclusion - but, rationally, you cannot be so sure about it as you are presenting.

I hope you take this in the spirit that it is meant.

There's a couple of element here you might not be accounting for... She's Brazilian, English isn't her first language so if you watch driver interviews with other nationalities (like Lando here) they'll generally re-tune their English to use more definitive or common words which can come across a bit of a patronising tone.

There's also another factor, saying things like "Great question... Well done..." Gives an interviewee time to to think about what they're going to say in response. It's a socially better way of going 'errrrm, let me think'.

My two cents...

Ill add that sportspersons tend to congratulate one question in order to undermine some other questions they didnt like.

Something like "now this is a proper question, not all the other bs ive been hearing...". I have seen football coaches do it all the time.

Since we have no context, maybe this is could also have triggered the male reporter intervention? And misoginy too, ofc.

I was surprised and, of course, pleased by Lando's praise. And I found it equally surprising and dear to come to my defense. The guys who commented are reporters I've worked with for a long time and, one of them, a friend. I don't believe they did anything wrong. It was a joke that, between people who know each other well, ended up with a short circuit.

I’m way ahead of you there jjcale, if only you hadn’t missed the half dozen times that I’ve said that my initial thoughts are based on not knowing the context or the relationship between the parties involved. It was right there in my 1st, 2nd and 6th post in this thread. Maybe I should have added it as a permanent disclaimer, in red bolded font?

Thanks for clarifying and good to see it confirmed as nothing negative because it was a joke between reporters that knew each other well.

Ted was that you again? (joke but could be)

I assume a female reporter wants to be taking seriously working in a male environment F1 and car racing in general is. When Lando's first reaction is great question you, ask the best, than it can easily give the impression that Lando says this because she is a female reporter. Not in a negative way tho.
More like supporting her or let her feel more comfortable or confident. The reaction of the male reporter was rude and completely out of place.

Yes, because never in the history of ever has a woman working in a male-dominated environment felt pressured or forced to go along with sexist jokes or belittling behavior towards her just so that she doesn't be viewed as "difficult".

Token female here.

My read, Lando was being patronising to her. But he doesn't normally come across in this way so it was probably unintentional and trying to be supportive of her from a male perspective, I.e. I can be a hero here. I think he meant his comment genuinely but he fell into that trap so many men do which is that somehow praise from you to a woman is more valuable somehow, that you as a man validate us in some way.

I honestly think the other male reporter was trying to jokingly call Lando out for his comment rather than attacking Becker but the tone didn't land very well.

And the entire thing is massively blown out of proportion and we should really move on. It's been nice to see so many people in here trying to defend Becker and denounce sexism, even if some of that feels a little guilty of what I'm accusing Lando of, but I'd rather have a million men try to be white knights and get it a bit wrong than no one even try.

Yes, because never in the history of ever has a woman working in a male-dominated environment felt pressured or forced to go along with sexist jokes or belittling behavior towards her just so that she doesn't be viewed as "difficult".

Because that’s exactly what I said…  :stoned:

Why is the "female reporter" noted in the subject, as if it makes any difference?
