Bit gutted about this one, as we're going on holiday to Scotland next week and we'll literally drive past Goodwood after arriving in Dover. Next year though, next year...

It’s a great day out. I went in 2012 and saw, amongst other things, the Ferrari lads just casually let a little kid sit in the cockpit of the actual racing car that Mark Gene was later driving around. I thought that was incredibly cool of them.

Don't know why they're putting up a smoky Dutch flag, but cheers anyway!

Yes, if you are going, make sure you know where your towing eye is in your car and be nice to the volunteers that pull you out of the car park!

Incident filled first day at Goodwood, a wheel came off an old Jaguar and bounced into the crowd as well. Thankfully it appears that no one was seriously injured - looked scary as hell though!

Whoever is responsible for arranging the access routes this year needs to be fired.  From a cannon.  Into a wall.

Smacks of someone having retired and someone coming in saying "I know how to deal with this far better" and ends up trying to put 50,000 cars on one road.  With broken traffic lights.

Absolute shitshow.  My normal 3-ish hour journey was nearer 6.  Mostly down to the last 5 miles taking 2 hours.

Especially with the hill as wet as it is today. Some of those ancient cars were getting very sideways.

Blimey.

I said this last year (and I don't want to be a killjoy by any means) but watching the speeds that some of the cars are doing now up the hill (e.g. the McMurtry)...it seems crazy that there are literally some haybales, a single crowd guardrail and nothing else between the track and crowd. I always wince a bit watching some of the quick runs.

I know it's become a bit of an exhibition rather than a competition and we have had quick runs up the hill in the past, but it just seems inconsistent with modern day track safety.

Travis Pastrana's run honestly made me wince most, you don't want an adrenaline junky on the limit and it did not look like he left anything on the table. Those bales work well as long as cars stay planted, we got a potential massacre on our hands when they don't.

I do still really want to go there though, but will pick our spot carefully.

On the stream they showed the McMurty's timed run from last year and I could barely watch it. It's too damn fast for so little protection. This year even just the show run was still wildly quick.

Sounds like they may cancel tomorrow.  I think because of high winds and potential damage to trees.

https://www.facebook...641167781379794

I know the hay bales don't look like great protection, but having been quite a few times I think they aren't as bad as they look on TV.  Firstly they aren't normal size haybales and secondly the distance of the crowd is quite far in the high risk areas. I'd estimate each one is around quater of a ton, more than a meter high, and therefore provide a significant distribution of energy. I've seen a few crashes on the corner the hyundai went off on yesterday, every time the cars stop with a couple of rows of bales left un touched.   I think the biggest worry with them would be fire.

For most cars I think they are fairly well covered as it's single car runs which are less likely to launch anything, however i really don't think the stadium trucks or any of the big 4x4/dakar rally stuff should be allowed e.g. an Xtreme E car could well go over the bales rather than in to them.

The Rally stage is also pretty good safety wise. It's very hard to get into the "firing zone" but can get a really good close look.

One of the really different things about Goodwood is the access to get close to the cars and the action. I would rather it was made non competitive than have fences up... it's one of the few places in the world you get to photograph these cars at speed without the haze of a fence

(I'm a local and was volunteering there today ready to tow people who needed it out of the carpark)

As there's nothing on today, let's learn the difference between Hay & Straw. While often used interchangeably by non-agricultural folk, they are actually quite different:

Hay - This is grass that's cut and baled prior to a seed head forming, meaning the cut leaf is full of nutrients. It's used as winter animal feed and is therefore quite a valuable commodity. ~£75/tonne*

Straw - This is the stem of cereal crops such as barley, wheat or oats. This is effectively a waste product from harvesting the seed heads (grain) but is mainly used as indoor winter bedding for farm animals.  ~£45/tonne*

*Straw is dry and hollow, whereas hay is more solid with a higher moisture content. So each bale is denser/heavier. 10 tonnes of straw is more bales than 10 tonnes of hay.

TLDR - The bales at Goodwood are Straw, not Hay.

They are often mixed up:

Armed with this crucial knowledge, now you too can can impress your friends every time they misidentify baled fodder. You're welcome.

If you want to get really nerdy, the bales used at Goodwood are 120x90s- in that they are 90cm tall, and 120cm wide. They’re made by a ‘six-stringer’ baler that runs six lengths of twine around each bale, meaning more straw can be packed into the same size package. Depending on bale length (usually 8ft in straw), a straw bale can range from 450-560kg in weight- the ones at Goodwood will be heavier than that though, because they’ve spent the last year sat outside so are bloody wet. Once used, the bales are then sent to the biomass boiler- it burns the bales and creates hot water for Goodwood house.

Top info. I had assumed they used new bales every year as they always look (from the tele) quite fresh. Do they use them for a few years each then?

They certainly used to, depending on the state of them- I wonder if they use fresh ones every year now they have the boiler to fill. Even if they’re fresh though, they’re from last years harvest so are pretty much a year old.

Does Goodwood have to be sanctioned by Motorsport UK or any governing body or isn't it technically a motorsport event?

A plane, with a machine gun mounted to the nose - you’d think that would raise an eyebrow or two with the stewards. But things were different under Moseley.

This is the only baler you need.

https://m.youtube.co...h?v=LwGYHFy59fY

Sorry, it’s really nerdy, but people in agriculture love this stuff. And get very emotional about whether that is the only baler you need, or if actually it’s rubbish and you need another one that does the same but in a very slightly different way. Or colour.

Getting hit by an unleashed marquee wouldn't have been fun.

Still, looks like I made the right call in giving it a miss this year. It's last week's Brooklands Tyrrell event that I regret missing.

Mick looked like he was having some fun in the W12. Now the Lotus parade is going on (Lotii?)

They're built to be used. It happens, but better than seeing it covered in dust in a barn somewhere.

Please don't tell me FoS has become an event to be seen at rather than enjoy.

The societal trend for going to events in order to take some pictures for internet clout rather than experiencing it and meeting like minded people is rather saddening.

I've been twice and for me it is all about looking at cars, taking pictures of cars, chatting to the people who work on these cars and chatting to strangers about cars.

Largely agree. The cars going up the hill is actually the least interesting element to me, often I ignored them completely.
