Alonso entering an 8th year with Ferrari with no titles is just not likely. There's no scenario I can see where Fernando Alonso is at Ferrari in 2017.

Exactly. Surely what we're looking for here is an agent who by his incompetence or his approach lost his driver the chance of a good drive (perhaps Hill/Breen is one such). The mere fact that a team performs worse one year than it had the previous season is just the nature of racing.

Don't know if it was Alboreto's agent, or simply Michele being loyal to sponsors, but when Tyrrell got a smidge of Camel sponsorship, Alboreto refused to end his personal Marlboro sponsorship, so was junked for Alesi.

Six months later he was junked by Marlboro as well.

I think Watson was also snookered by advice to up his wages at McLaren, meaning he had not signed a contract when Renault sacked Prost at the end of 1983, so could be eased out without any repercussions.  It may have ended the same way, given Ronzo would have moved heaven and earth to sign up Alain, but perhaps in a more remunerative manner.

The Alboreto thing always amuses me because in my main reference for the 1989 season, the programme from the Spanish Grand Prix, he’s pictured in his Larrousse overalls with a prominent “Camel Racing” patch on them.

It’s also doubly amusing that Tyrrell had no signs of Camel on the car in 1990. Things clearly moved fast in those days.

Nor Rothmans, even if their abortive deal clearly inspired the rather attractive colour scheme.

Did Mclaren perform "worse?" Daniel won a race in 2021...Lando had a pole and several podiums in 2021. It was their best season for a long time. They even beat Renault in the WCC. Still, the move damaged his career and as I said before, Renault vs Mclaren was a sideways move (both won a race in '21) and if he was going to break hearts at Renault, it should have been to go back to Red Bull, a clearly superior team.

^ Wasn't really commenting on the specifics of that season, only on the definition of an agent screwing up his driver.

Does Daniel Ricciardo have an agent? If he does, then that person qualifies here…going to Mclaren was ill-fated.

Dan must love his agent, despite how unstable his career went, he also became a very rich man.

The Camel story was more of pretext as the relationship between Ken and Michele deteriorated when Palmer got priority over Michele regarding the new car which did not go down well at all with Michele.

And Michele reaction did not go down well at all with Ken.

Well i guess the deal for Honda engine in 1991 helped a bit for the Marlboro money.

Also Jean Alesi was a long time member of the World Championship team even though he had to move ship towards the Camel racing service due to his lacklustre F3000 season in 1988.

Johan Zarco's move to KTM while a Honda seat was available almost killed his career. IIRC that was on the management that committed early to Honda and lead to a fallout between the manager and the rider

I think Flavio Briatore probably deserves a mention here.  His blatant self-dealing definitely didn't hurt him, nor the Renault F1 team, but probably led to less than ideal outcomes for most of the drivers he managed.  Certainly they could have had either more time in better cars, or better compensated deals if they had someone fighting their corner instead of making sure he balanced the Renault team budget.

I’d argue that it was Zarco’s attitude that nearly killed his career.

Thankfully he seems to have improved with age.
