Supposedly a Timo Glock statue at the entrance to the McLaren Technology Centre. Does anyone of you what's going on here? As far as I remember, Timo Glock never had connections to McLaren, so this would be a strange choice for placing a Timo Glock statue. Is this some kind of a hoax?
Oh, and if someone knows where McLaren's new wind tunnel is located, please let me know as I couldn't find it out eventually. The old wind tunnel is/was inside the MTC, but does this also apply to the new wind tunnel?

I imagine it must be a 2008-related joke. Things like this turn up on Google Maps from time to time.

The new tunnel is the same as the old, they upgraded it.

This is the start of one of those internet rumours now, people will read this thread and think there was actually a Timo Glock statue at Mclaren and spread it as gospel.

Haven't there been plans to expand the MTC a couple of years ago? New buildings for McLaren Applied Applications and so on?

These are architect's drawings. Often these are not what it has been built.

I do like the idea of a statue of Timo at the MTC, with a plaque beneath saying “Is that Glock?” It’s next to the plinth with Niki Lauda’s ear and Nigel Mansell’s blown tyre.
There is a good statue of a War of the Worlds Martian tripod in Woking though.

Probably a joke, because Hamilton overtook Glock in the final lap in Brazil 2008 and beat Massa to the championship.
The thing that always amuses me about this is that Glock staying out on slicks, so jumping ahead of Hamilton when he pitted for inters, was the only thing that put the Hamilton WDC in doubt for a couple of laps. He nearly made it work and nearly won the WDC for Massa. If he'd pitted for inters like everyone else, Hamilton would have won the WDC.
So the idea Glock somehow benefited McLaren or Hamilton doesn't really work.
(not trying to be a killjoy about the google map joke, which is pretty funny - just amuses me that the above always gets looked past with the excitement of "is that Glock?" - which tbf is up there in my top 10 sporting moments)

People put joke locations on Google Maps all the time. Note that location is on the public road too, and I doubt the Woking Borough council have enough of a sense of humour to actually allow such a thing.
I wouldn't put it past WBC considering they've had enough sense to run themselves up almost £3,000,000,000 of debt (three billion for one borough council!)

Why would McLaren have a statue of an Irishman outside their office?

Wonder how long before they build an Alex Palou statue next to it…

That would be an effigy for ritual burning every year on 11th August.

100% true. Ross Brown commissioned it from his offices in Croydon.
Right after his meeting with Lewis .....

They should put a Nelson Piquet Jr statue up too

No Felipe, what you mean to say is they should put one up of the Ferrari pitcrew, or a nice carving of their traffic light system. It would be strange to put up a statue to a driver who cost them points.

I add/edit/fix stuff on Google maps. Sometimes my changes don't get approved. I guess some human does the checking and some daftness will get in sometimes

The late and much lamented Autosport live chat - the archives of which were destroyed in an act of cultural barbarism by unlettered fascists - was basically an entire stream of about a hundred different people suddenly going "glock".

“Millions of voices cried out Glock as one and then . . . Silence.”
