Really unfortunate for Ricciardo, but if Stroll and Alonso are anything to go by we’ll likely see him back in the cockpit sooner than we think.

I would imagine Lawson will likely take the seat for Monza too since it’s only a week away. Really this probably should have been his seat in the first place. Good luck to him, and here’s wishing Ricciardo a speedy recovery.

At the time I said it was a bad one for Ricciardo, on replays it looks like he had little chance to react to the yellow, so he was either probably hitting PIastri or the wall, unfortunate placement on track and then a little slow on the yellow being displayed.

That said, i'm surprised he kept his hands on the wheel, that usually seems to be the 101 of crashing to avoid, unfortunately for him it seems he might have paid a very heavy price for that.

Oh man! Highlights the importance of letting go of the wheel if you can when you have an accident. Poor Dan though. His return to F1 is turning into quite the damp squib.

Sorry to hear it. Hopefully it won't impact his career long-term. It's a baptism of fire for Lawson, that's for sure.

Having been a bit of a Lawson fan since I first saw him in ADAC F4 five years ago, I'm already working on a list of excuses. The first one being, making your F1 debut at Zandvoort on a Saturday is not a simple task.

Hope he's a quick healer.  Not the first driver to keep their hands on the wheel in an incident- they usually get away with it.  Did look in a lot of discomfort from the onboard replays.

Presumably he will miss Monza next week too so indeed it seems doubly bad as it will give Lawson a chance to do a De Vries and cement the seat alongside Tsunoda next year

Yea - I'm pretty excited to see what he can do - he does seem very adaptable.

Gutted for Dan. No luck at all. Was looking decent in fp2. Just glad he didn't t-bone Oscar. Wonder if he kept holding the wheel to make sure he didn't bounce off the wall and end up in the middle of the track and/or hit Oscar.

Sounds like you are frothing at the mouth for it. How about a little tact for the guy that just went to hospital. Ricciardo still has a chance to reclaim the seat for next year too..

These super-sub appearances irk me because IF Lawson performs as I expect him to - that is to say above expectations - suddenly he will become flavour of the month and an F1 driver in waiting, despite the fact he's been here all along!!

It doesn't speak very well to the preparedness of F3 and in particular F2, which I think is a very poor championship, nor the judgement of F1's senior figures.

I feel terribly for Daniel, it is a cruel blow. I also feel for Yuki because his own future is still in the air and the constant changing does him no favours.

Nonetheless, BEST OF LUCK to Lawson

I'm not sure that, he appeared to be still trying to turn left, i.e what would have been towards Piastri or the track.

Just a simple unfortunate mistake. And could really harm his chances of getting a good bit of momentum together to impress Red Bull senior squad.

Good luck to Lawson, tough place to make your debut, especially on a Saturday.

I need to watch the replay again, but it looked like it was his RIGHT hand on the wheel, and his left was off the wheel, soi think it was the wheel coming round and smacking the left hand which was already loose

The fact that he was even in the car after a couple of years as one of the worst drivers in the field was a huge break few people would ever get. I'd say he is more lucky than most.

Maybe, but just seemed odd he kept holding on. Not out of the realms of possibility if your trying to control the car as long as possible on a dangerous corner like that and trying to avoid t-boning another driver.

Well yes, but I'm not sure how you think he was trying to avoid hitting Piastri. The steering wheel isn't going to do much once the car has bounced off the wall.

Really unfortunate for Daniel.

Minimal 3-4 week recovery time for a metacarpal fracture. And the pain management afterwards.

If it doesn't end his season he won't be at his peak for the remainder of it.

Fairly certain any hopes for pinching Checco's seat just went out the window.*

* Not that he ever really had a chance.

No it was more just thinking he was making sure the car was controlled into the wall as long as possible to try and basically wedge the car and stop asap rather than let go and leave it up to chance and end up hitting Oscar or in the middle of the track. Just a theory.

Missing Zandvoort won't be a problem, because he wouldn't have been able to shine here anyway. Hope this doesn't keep Ricciardo from racing again soon though :well:

He was going for a barrier at relatively low speed , he even turned more to the left towards Oscar right before impact. Should have let go.

Man I haven't missed these weird excuses. At all.

relooked and his left hand appears to be on the wheel and crushed against underside of cockpit as the wheel comes round. very ouch

Huge news!

How awesome.

Lawson will become the 10th F1 driver from New Zealand, and only the 3rd in the past 40 years.

Here a question I wonder what number lawson will have?

IIRC he'll get the AT "reserve" number. He used 40 in his two FP's with AT last year. And 36 with RB. I am pretty sure he'll be using #40 for this event. He as a replacement driver won't be able to choose a permanent number.

EDIT: Just to add some more to this. Nyck de Vries used #19 in his two Mercedes FP's in 2022, he used #34 in his Aston Martin FP and #45 in his Williams FP. When he replaced Albon for Monza in 2022, he used #45 as that's the Williams number (Sargeant also used #45 when he did his FP1's in 2022). I would assume Alpha Tauri still has #40 as their designated FP-driver and reserve number.

Huge opportunity for Lawson to follow Vandoorne and de Vries with an excellent supersub appearance upon which to build a disappointing full-time F1 career.

Really sucks for him just after the comeback. Any word on how long he'll be out?

Looking forward to seeing what Lawson can do. Sergio Perez must be breathing a sigh of relief.

I mean that’s just the reality of F1. It’s dog-eat-dog and next man up syndrome is king so his silly mistake compounds by opening the door for Lawson

Based upon Stroll’s recovery i wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in Singapore in 3 weeks with some heavy strapping and a pain killing injection.

Depends how bad it is I guess, but I imagine Singapore is just about the worst place to drive with a sore hand.
