I don't know if this belongs here - but I can't think of anywhere else to ask the question.
Last weekend I acquired a Tecno toy Cooper-Norton at the Sandown Toyfayre. The trouble is the decals are slightly damaged. Does anyone know a way of removing 50-year old factory-applied decals without damaging the paint? I'm worried that if a solvent is strong enough to loosen/remove the decal it will also do the same to the paint underneath.
Many thanks in advance

There are some good forums out there for modelers. I've used this one to ask about things like your question and had some great input from its members. Some of the work in progress threads are impressive too.

There is a product (available from Grand Prix Models and other sources) called MicroSet that is normally used to soften decals during application and improve adhesion. The label states it can also be used to remove decals by applying until the decal softens and then lifting off or rubbing off the decal.

Might be a silly idea, but have you tried water? It worked on a fifties Dinky DB3S...

Try Scotch tape, as we call it here in the former Colonies. It is a clear adhesive tape used for taping paper or packages.

Many thanks for the suggestions.
Well, for a start I tried Sterzo's suggestion of water (with a little washing up liquid) as I have a tap full of it available free, and left it immersed for a while. The numbers came off almost straight away. The big decal of a white nose and a Swiss flag took quite a bit longer but it's all off now.
