It is Race Day, let's do this thing. Once again, in a bid to try and get out of doing any actual work, I asked ChatGPT to lend a hand and make me a Halloween themed race preview and once again, it let me down big time. I got served up some tasteless nonsense about all the drivers being spooked by the ghost of a dead driver. Gah! I just wanted driver name puns, like on the Simpsons Halloween specials, you stupid machine! Anyway, so I had another go and made the request that specific. The results of which I'm going to share with you now:

Of course! Here are some spooky puns based on current Formula 1 driver names (as of my last training cut-off in 2022):

  • Lewis Hamilton - "Ghoul-is Hamil-tomb"
  • Max Verstappen - "Max Vamp-stappen"
  • Valtteri Bottas - "Val-tomb-ri Ghost-tas"
  • Sergio Perez - "Scare-gio Phan-tom-ez"
  • Daniel Ricciardo - "Danie-ghoul Rici-argh-do"
  • Charles Leclerc - "Char-lairs Witch-clerc"
  • Lando Norris - "Lando Noir-witch"
  • Sebastian Vettel - "Se-bat-tian Vat-ghoul"
  • Pierre Gasly - "Pier Ghast-ly"
  • Carlos Sainz - "Car-ghost Scares"
  • George Russell - "Gore-ge Ru-skull"
  • Nicholas Latifi - "Night-cholas Lat-boo-fi"
  • Fernando Alonso - "Fear-nando Alone-soul"
  • Esteban Ocon - "E-scream-ban O-coffin"
  • Mick Schumacher - "Mystic Shoe-mummy-cher"

Some say it's going to take over the world, but not today. ANYWAY, these are the results from yesterday in Quali:

There were a bunch of incidents reported to the stewards, the results of which seemed to please no-one and are summarised here.

This is the starting grid

Tyres

Pirelli think it will be a one stop race. Here are the available tyres:

When is it on?

Even F1's account seem to be doubting their own widget thanks to the clocks going back in Europe so I'll update this if needed:

Ghoulish Hamil-tomb

I'd started this thing because all I'd been able to come up with was AlonsOooOooOoo and Toto Wolfman so I figured the glowing white box would easily beat my rubbish yet here we are with Car-Ghost Scares.

Odd to see Verstappen with two harder sets. Degradation wasn't that awful?

Edit:
Aston Martin seems to have lost the plot.

No chance of rain today, 25c.

I kind of want a situation where an SC screws Max but helps Checo, and it ends up with Max chasing down Checo for the win. Will he go for the overtake, or let Checo have this one?

An truly intelligent artificial intelligence would have denied your request and informed you that derogatory names and puns of driver names, for instance “Crashilton” or “Alonsoslow”, are considered as flamebait. They might be initially amusing, even appropriate, but they won't foster a sensible discussion. :)

In a few years we'll have to update the rules with new derogatory names for current drivers. You know, so we know what not to say.

I’m not sure that’s even a word.
It may exist on the internet…. But it’s not a word.

Unsatisfactory is a word.

I'd feel a little more confident in Ferrari's chances if Verstappen were starting from the pit lane. Still, I'm looking forward to the race. Will study the Mexican circuit closely to understand why it's so bad.

Ferrari may win if they sacrifice one of their drivers to hold off Max while the other runs away. Or if Max DNF’s. Otherwise it’ll be very very difficult.

Ch4 UK subtitles spoke of a 'Filanderer on soul' before correcting itself.

I'm confident SAI could win but not so much with LEC.  It will be an interesting race, either way!

Leclerc really needs to run away with this if Ferrari has the speed.

If Sainz does it, or beats Leclerc or Leclerc bins it... I mean statistically Perez is a better driver  :rotfl:

How about a rule which states "No stopping at the end of the pit lane before joining the track except for a red light or when practising a start from the designated area..." Then start the controlled timed segments half way round the circuit.

It can be easier than that. “No stopping in the fast lane of pit lane unless instructed to do so by a race official or in case of an obstruction.”

They should get rid of these 'practice start' areas too IMO. There shouldn't be any reason for a car to slow down or stop when exiting the pitlane...it should be limiter off and join the track - and that's it.

I don’t see a problem with them as long as they’re off the fast lane.

They don't need them. It just adds another bit of potential confusion at the end of the pitlane with some cars stopping, some cars launching, some cars exiting the pits as normal, some cars slowing down to stop in the practice start area...I just think they should can it.

Aren't they still doing the practice starts on the grid in FP sessions anyway?

There is no justification for the stewards allowing drivers to stop in the pitlane. None whatsoever, that is totally ridiculous.

Once you commit to the fast lane, you must keep going and rejoin the track. If you want to stop, you can do this at the end of the pitlane, on the spot designated for practice starts, without blocking anyone.

Isn't it simple?

Stewards came down pretty hard on Sargeant.

10 place grid penalty for not setting a lap time, and 2 penalty points for passing Tsunoda under yellow flag (even though the panel light was green).

Making up for letting Max, Alonso, and Russel off the hook I guess.

F1 just becomes more contrived every race.

It shouldn't even need saying. If there was no explicit rule they should have been done for unsportsmanlike conduct.

I suspect they didn't because there are some risks involved with calibrating the engine at altitude with zero practice.
