I recently made contact with a high school class mate from the mid Sixties, whose father at that time ran a Cooper Monaco on Swedish circuits and Norwegian horse-trotting tracks. Also, there was Winter racing on ice (our Winter Championships on frozen lakes, with crash barriers made up from snow banks) using spiked tyres...inch and a half -long steel cones that bolted through the tyres from the inside. His father had apparently bought the Cooper from Curt Lincoln of Finland, and ran it in the Nordic countries with considerabke success in 1962/63 before it was sold to the US, He is keen to know how many Monacos were produced, and any information about the Curt Lincoln car. It was said at the time that Lincoln had purchased the car from Jack Brabham, but I do not seem to recall Black Jack doing much racing in a Monaco. Any Cooper affectionados out there able to shine a little light on any of this?

From the excellent book "Cooper Cars" by Doug Nye, Kurt was a frequent customer of The Cooper Car Company, Ltd.   It indicates he purchased the first Cooper Monaco chassis CM/1/59 equipped with Coventry Climax FPF/430/15/1104.  The list further indicates that 8 cars of that year and type were sold but we don't always take that as the number, as a few cars were known to be supplied as "kits" without noted serial numbers. 

 

Jack Brabham was a Cooper team driver and seems to have brokered many deals on Cooper cars to fellow racers.  

 

I'd love to see photos of the car ice racing!!

To determine the quantities produced that will be a hard search, since a number of the Monacos came as kits, without any chassis numbers. Mostly to avoid the UK purchase tax.

The Cooper enjoyed quite a career in the Nordic countries, as it turns out. Leif Koxvold won races on frozen lakes in wintertime, and on horse-trotting tracks in the summer, as well as running on Swedish circuits such as Karlskoga. His son Tore has just sent me some photos including racing both on ice and on gravel.  I will try to get them onto this tread, but have to sort out copyrights.. Many sports-racers were in fact run on those frozen lakes, both in Finland, Sweden and Norway. Unfortunately, winter temperatures have not allowed this kind of racing to continue.
